Celtic Tattoos are my favourite type of tattoos. Admittedly I am biased as I have Celtic roots being from Cornwall, England. A traditional Celtic tattoo on the forearm or wrist is a good place ? and more increasingly we see elaborate designs on the back and chest areas.
Celts come from Europe (usually the edges) and speak or spoke the Celtic Language (eg Welsh, Cornish). Celts not only had their own language, they also had their own unique culture and religion. The main Celtic areas are that of Brittany (France), Galicia (North West Spain), Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and Asturia (Northern Spain).
Celtic history literally goes back thousands of years. In Britain, by the early first millennium AD, following the expansion of the Roman Empire and the invading European warriors, such as the Angles of Northern Germany, the Celtic culture had become restricted to the extremities of the British Isles ? mainly Cornwall, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, which is where the of the Celts has survived, carved into standing stones and stone tombs as well as being discovered on pottery fragments and ornaments.
Celtic art is generally referred to as ornamental. The Celts avoided the use of straight lines and symmetry. There are many types that make for good tattoos, for example the Celtic cross, Celtic knotwork, Celtic symbols and the Celtic love knot.
The Celts worshipped deities, animals and the land, and over time they were exposed more to Christianity, their symbols and shapes started to change into crosses and stars. One of the reasons for this adaptation was to avoid conflict with that of Christian beliefs. But, these adapted elements are what remains and what is most seen in traditional tattoos.
Celtic tattoos are usually carried out using black ink. It is suggested that colours could be used, but my preference is to avoid colour.
For people of Celtic heritage, having a Celtic tattoo design is often a way of expressing pride in ones heritage ? they are very often seen as bands around the arms or on the wrist and more recently the lower back has become a popular place.
