Perry, Romney contrast in style, substance

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) ? Campaigning just five miles and a few minutes apart, Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Rick Perry showed first-in-the-nation primary state voters just how starkly different they are.

Romney, who leads the state's polls, has spent years campaigning here and has a home on a nearby lake, held an hour-long town hall meeting Friday outside of Manchester. Perry, a much newer presidential candidate on his sixth visit to the state, filed his official paperwork to appear on the state's presidential primary ballot, met briefly with voters at a local restaurant and gave a boisterous speech to social conservatives.

Romney held private meetings in Manchester Friday morning and spent the evening taking questions from voters, covering fiscal policy, the environment, defense, even NASA funding. He largely ignored his Republican rivals and went after President Barack Obama instead.

"The president's philosophy," Romney said, "is extraordinarily misguided. What they have done over the last three years is every time they've seen an area they thought needed addressing, they put more government in, and what it did was it caused the private sector to retreat."

Romney is far ahead in the polls here. His organization is long-running and stable. And he faces challenges from a multitude of rivals who are competing for the same group of conservative voters.

Perry ? his chief rival in money, staff and organization elsewhere in the country ? spent his New Hampshire morning defending his debate performances and campaign trail mistakes ? and attacking rivals Romney and Herman Cain.

"The governor (Romney) has been on opposite sides of a lot of issues. He was for banning handguns; now he's Mister Second Amendment," Perry said during a radio interview at the Barley House restaurant across from the New Hampshire Statehouse. "Governor Romney in his book initially said his health care plan would be good for America. And then he took that sentence out when the book came out in paperback. So the issue is, Who are we really going to trust to stand up every day and be consistent? I have been consistent."

And in a spirited 20-minute speech at the socially conservative Cornerstone Action's banquet here, Perry cracked jokes, talked baseball, quoted from Proverbs and waved his one-page flat tax filing form in the air.

The two men ? one businesslike, calm, usually careful; the other aggressive, spirited and pointed in conviction ? could hardly provide New Hampshire voters with two more different candidates to choose from, in style, focus or substance.

Romney came to his town hall surrounded by a handful of his longest-serving and most influential advisers, business leaders and political operatives. He opened his remarks with an anecdote about his father, former Michigan Gov. George Romney, to describe why America's economy is in trouble.

"He said there's nothing as vulnerable as entrenched success," Romney told the crowd of about 100, seated in chairs surrounding him. "His idea was that some groups of people or companies or nations become so used to their success that they become complacent, they become fat, lazy, and other upstarts are able to rush past them."

Romney has been working hard here for months, almost since he lost his last campaign in 2008. He's focused relentlessly on his economic message, a pitch that plays well with independent-minded voters in the state. He avoids the social issues that tripped him up last time, including abortion and gay marriage.

And while he was on message during his appearance on the trail, his campaign was left to deal with yet more accusations that he had flip-flopped on a major issue important to conservatives. It's a reputation left over from the last campaign, and one he's been unable to shake. On Friday, Democrats seized on comments he made in Pittsburgh, where he said he wasn't sure what was causing global warming ? remarks they portrayed as a shift from a previous position, though Romney had said as much before.

Perry, by contrast, is on his sixth visit to the state since he announced his presidential run in mid-August. He's far behind in the polls here, and is instead likely to focus on the caucuses in Iowa and the primaries in South Carolina and Florida. He arrived, as always, accompanied by a few of personal aides and a sizable security contingent.

His central message is his job creation record in Texas.

Chavez orders more land taken from British firm

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuela's president on Sunday ordered the expropriation of 716,590 acres belonging to a British-owned company amid a disagreement over compensation for earlier takeovers of ranchland from the firm.

President Hugo Chavez announced the latest seizure after saying that Venezuela refuses to pay compensation in foreign currency to Agropecuaria Flora, a local subsidiary of the British company Vestey Group.

Chavez said the government had received a demand from the company that it be paid in dollars for the previous seizure of tens of thousands of acres. But the government insists in paying in bolivars, Venezuela's currency.

It's difficult for foreign companies operating in Venezuela to repatriate profits and other income in bolivars due to foreign currency controls in the South American country.

Representatives of Agropecuaria Flora did not answer telephone calls seeking comment Sunday.

Venezuela's expropriation of farm and ranch lands began in earnest in 2005, with the government employing a 2001 law allowing it to seize lands deemed idle or not adequately used.

Some landowners have negotiated compensation, while others have mounted legal challenges with mixed results.

The government has also seized some ranches for which it alleges the owners didn't hold legal title in the first place.

Owners of large farms and cattle ranches have criticized the takeovers, arguing that Chavez's socialist-inspired policies have failed to boost agricultural production and made Venezuela increasingly dependent on imports of food from countries such as Brazil and Argentina.

LA SALLE WINS 2011 ATLANTIC 10 CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP; SANTANA MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMER, IRELAND COACH OF THE YEAR

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The La Salle men?s cross country team won the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship on Saturday, which was held at Frank Liske Park on the campus of Charlotte. Junior Alfredo Santana (Philadelphia, PA / Nueva Esperanza Academy) won the race to earn Most Outstanding Performer honors.

Santana crossed the finish line with a time of 24:18 and and is the third Explorer to receive this honor and the first since Sean Quigley, who the last Explorer honored in 2006. The junior is the third Explorer to win the individual title at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The other two Explorers to win the title were Quigley (twice, 2006 and 2005) and Todd Witzleben (twice, 2002 and 2001).

The title is the eighth Atlantic 10 Conference Championship for the program, the most by any school in the conference. La Salle's women's cross country team also captured the Atlantic 10 Championship on Saturday.

Head coach Dan Ireland also received honors from the Atlantic 10 Conference as he was voted Coach of the Year. This is the eighth time a coach from La Salle has been honored, following seven-time Coach of the Year Charles Torpey.

Before the races began, the Atlantic 10 had a moment of silence for Torpey, who passed away suddenly this summer. The Explorers continued to honor Torpey as they wore a patch on their uniforms as they had done all season for the former coach.

?It was a huge win coming in from the summer and what happened with Coach Torpey and being picked to be the preseason favorites," Ireland said. "The girls and guys both rose to the occasion."

"This win is something that Coach Torpey put together," Ireland continued. "He got them to this point. It was our job to finish the job."

Four other Explorers finished in the top fifteen, earning all-conference honors. Sophomore Nick Ross (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) (5th, 24:36) and senior Nick Crits (Ambler, PA / Wissahickon) (6th, 24:38) were the other top ten finishers for the Explorers. Senior David Hausherr (Townsend, MA / North Middlesex) (24:59) and sophomore Luke Arbuckle ?(Elkton, MD / Eklton) (24:59), finished 13th and 14th respectively, rounded out the top fifteen.

All five Explorers that scored for the team earned All-Conference honors for the first time in their careers.

La Salle finished with 39 points, whereas the runner-up Duquesne finished with 72 points.

DirecTV complains to FCC about "misleading" Fox ads (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? DirecTV Group sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) alleging that Fox Broadcasting Co was running misleading ads warning customers that the satellite TV network would pull their access to local Fox stations.

In its letter, DirecTV said the dispute over carriage fees with News Corp owned Fox would only result in customers no longer being able to access Fox's cable channels like FX and National Geographic, if the two companies were unable to agree to a new carriage deal by November 1.

"Fox, however, is running advertisements asserting that DirecTV viewers 'soon could even lose' the Fox broadcast stations in their local markets," DirecTV said in a letter to the FCC.

The current carriage agreement for the cable channels expired on September 30. However, Fox's broadcast stations are covered under a separate agreement, which does not expire until Dec 31.

Fox was not immediately available for comment.

Microsoft cracks open a window to the future, anticipates our laziness (video)

In the future, we'll all be slaves to rectangles. No, really. Well, at least that's the prognosis, albeit sanitized, Microsoft has slickly pieced together in its Productivity Future Vision concept video. It's a mostly seamless world where all of our interactions are made to be mobile, virtual, efficient and white-washed, but it actually just reads as too darn fussy and overcomplicated. Sure, we could get behind contactless payment, tablets with holographic displays and eyeglasses that translate conversations when you've just stepped off a red eye into some foreign destination -- that's all incredibly useful. But car windows with agenda overlays and transparent refrigerator door displays? Some things are better left lo-tech. For Redmond's part, the company's merely aiming to project ways these various implementations of "real technology" will intersect and "actively assist" us with our harried lives. Take a peek at MS' sanctioned tomorrow land and its sparse piano soundtrack after the break.

Four fun Halloween photo effects

Nicholas Kamm / AFP - Getty Images file

Carved pumpkins at the 7th annual pumpkin carving competition at the Helix Lounge in Washington on October 26, 2011.

Between the kids? costumes, jack-o-lanterns and trick-or-treating, there are a lot of photo moments to capture. To get great photos in these difficult lighting situations, though, you?ll have to do a little more than just point and shoot. So check out our tips for taking your photos up a notch. And we?ll give you ideas for special effects that will make an already spooky holiday even spookier.

Photographing jack-o-lanterns
Great jack-o-lantern shots capture both the glow coming from the pumpkin and the textures of the pumpkin?s skin and surrounding objects in low light.

Take this shot at twilight (about 20 minutes after the sun goes down) when the glow from your pumpkin will produce about the same amount of light as the sky. With the exposure for everything the same, your camera will easily capture details in the entire shot.

If you miss this window, put your camera in HDR mode (High Dynamic Range) mode (Cameras we recommend, like the $200 Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS have this). In HDR mode, the camera takes an overexposed shot to capture the pumpkin skin detail and an underexposed shot for the candle?s glow and then merges them together without your intervention. If your camera doesn?t have an HDR mode, you can merge photos of different exposures together using Adobe Photoshop Elements? Photomerge Exposure editing mode.

Be sure you can?t see the flame of the candle when taking your shots. It will appear too bright as a spot in your picture. And use a tripod and set the camera?s self-timer to avoid the brief shake that inevitably occurs when you press down on the shutter button.

Creating ghosts in your photos
You can create ghosts two ways. If your camera supports long exposures ? at least 8 seconds ? you can have the person or object remain in the frame for part of the exposure, about 5 seconds. The space where the person was is double exposed, making your subject appear somewhat translucent.

The other way to create a ghost is to take two photos and merge them together. In Photoshop Elements, you create two layers. Make sure the photo containing the person is the layer on top and then experiment with the transparency of that layer to create your effect.

Making ghost writing
For ghost writing, you?ll need a camera that supports exposures of at least 8 seconds, with 16 or 30 producing even better results, a tripod or flat surface, a flashlight or two and darkness. The trick is to use the flashlight to draw pictures or words in the air. The long exposure captures the trailing light as a bright image floating in the air.

Keep in mind that the camera captures the mirror image of what you draw, so you?ll have to write your message backward (hard) or flip the photo in your photo editing program (easy).

Shooting spooky silhouettes
Around sunset, take photos against the beautiful orange and red sky without a flash to create a silhouette of your subject. Make sure you have a clear sightline to the sky, so your subject doesn?t have to compete with other objects on the horizon. The technique works great with kids in funky costumes.

Police, protesters clash in Oakland at Occupy camp (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? Dozens of police in riot gear and hundreds of protesters supporting the Occupy Wall Street movement engaged in a game of cat-and-mouse in downtown Oakland on Tuesday, with authorities using tear gas to respond to demonstrators' repeated agitations.

The latest such skirmish came around 11:15 PDT in front of City Hall, where a haze of chemical smoke still hung in the air following several similar clashes at the site over the course of the night.

It was the fifth time in about three hours that police a fired a volley of tear gas to disperse a crowd at the scene where ongoing tension has erupted into conflict throughout the day.

The number of protesters has diminished with each round of gas. About 200 remained late Tuesday, mostly young adults, some riding bicycles, protecting themselves from the noxious fumes with bandanas and scarves wrapped around their faces.

Police have established a presence in a plaza where a pre-dawn raid Tuesday dismantled an encampment of Occupy Wall Street protesters that had dominated the area for more than two weeks.

Authorities removed about 170 demonstrators who had been staying in the area overnight after repeatedly being warned that such a camp was illegal and they faced arrest by remaining. City officials said 97 people were arrested in the morning raid.

The first evening scuffle broke out after several hundred people made their way back to City Hall in an attempt to re-establish a presence in the area of the disbanded camp.

The protesters had gathered at a downtown library, marched toward City Hall and ultimately were met by police officers in riot gear. Several small skirmishes broke out and officers cleared the area by firing tear gas.

The scene has repeated itself several times since. But each time officers move to disperse the crowd, protesters quickly gather again in assemblies that authorities have declared illegal. Tensions rise as protesters edge closer to police line and climax when someone throws a bottle or rock and authorities response with volleys of gas.

Police have denied reports that they used flash bang canisters to help break up the crowds, saying the loud noises came from large firecrackers thrown at police by protesters.

Helicopters scanned the area late Tuesday and scores of officers wearing helmets and carrying clubs patrolled the streets. Fire crews responded to small blazes in trash containers.

Protesters moved about uneasily even as one used a bull horn to express his resolve.

"This movement is more than just the people versus the police," Mario Fernandez said. "It's about the people trying to have their rights to basic services."

He added, "This crowd isn't going anywhere anytime soon."

Acting Police Chief Howard Jordan told reporters at a late night news conference that authorities had no other choice, saying the protesters were throwing rocks and bottles at officers.

"We had to deploy gas to stop the crowd," he said, according to a KCBS report.

City officials say that two officers were injured. At least five protesters were arrested and several others injured in the evening clashes.

The Oakland site was among numerous camps that have sprung up around the country, as protesters rally against what they see as corporate greed and a wide range of other economic issues. The protests have attracted a wide range of people, including college students looking for work and the homeless.

In Oakland, tensions between the city and protesters have been escalating since last week as officials complained about what they described as deteriorating safety, sanitation and health issues at the site of the dismantled camp.

AP sources: NYPD officers charged in ticket probe

(AP) ? What began two years ago as a low-profile wiretap investigation of a New York Police Department officer has resulted in criminal charges against at least 16 officers alleging they abused their authority by helping family and friends avoid paying traffic tickets, two people familiar with the case said Thursday.

The officers were expected to be arraigned Friday in the Bronx, said the people, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because authorities hadn't announced the results of the grand jury investigation.

The people declined to detail the charges or name the officers. The Bronx district attorney's office declined to comment Thursday, as did Paul Browne, chief spokesman for the New York Police Department, and union officials.

The ticket-fixing case doesn't appear to rise to the level of the more notorious corruption scandals in the nation's largest police department. But in terms of the number of officers facing criminal or internal administrative charges, the probe represents the largest crackdown on police accused of misconduct in recent memory.

The charges against 13 police officers, two sergeants and one lieutenant are the latest in a spate of corruption allegations against NYPD officers. They include delegates with the department's largest and most powerful union, the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association.

Earlier this week, federal prosecutors in Manhattan brought conspiracy and other charges against five current and three former officers alleging they were part of a gun-running ring. In two other recent unrelated federal cases, one officer was charged with arresting a black man without cause and using a racial slur to describe the suspect, and another with using a law enforcement database to try to trump up charges against an innocent man.

As the ticket-fixing investigation unfolded, union officials complained that the probe unfairly singled out officers for an unofficial practice ? undoing paperwork on traffic citations before they reach court ? that has been tolerated for years.

"This issue could have and should have been addressed differently," Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, has said.

The case evolved from a 2009 internal affairs probe of a Bronx officer suspected of associating with a drug dealer, officials said. While listening to the officer's phone, investigators heard calls from people seeing if he could fix tickets for them, they said.

That led to more wiretaps that produced evidence of additional officers having similar conversations. An unrelated drunken driving case in the Bronx provided a window into the secret probe when prosecutors were forced to disclose to the defense that the arresting officer was among those recorded talking about ticket fixing.

According to a transcript of the tape, a union delegate tells an officer, "I'll get this taken care of" by having a ticket issued to a girlfriend of the officer's cousin pulled the next day.

Aside from those officers charged criminally, dozens more could face internal charges. In one disciplinary case already decided earlier this year, a former Patrolmen's Benevolent Association financial secretary in the Bronx admitted administrative misconduct charges and was docked 40 days of vacation and suspended for five days.

Last fall, the NYPD ? which has about 35,000 officers ? installed new computer system that tracks tickets and makes it much more difficult to tamper with the paper trail.

Commissioner Raymond Kelly recently formed a new unit within internal affairs to look into ticket fixing. Its officers sit in on traffic court testimony and comb through paperwork to ensure none of the methods is being wrongly employed.

The last serious corruption scandal for the NYPD was the so-called "Dirty 30" case from the early 1990s. More than 33 officers from Harlem's 30th Precinct were implicated in the probe, with most pleading guilty to charges including stealing cash from drug dealers, taking bribes, beating suspects and lying under oath to cover their tracks.

Simon Cowell is a lot of things. Blunt. Straightforward. British. But is he, as one of his fellow "X Factor" stars claim, childish in his judging methods?

We caught up with Cowell, Paula Abdul, Steve Jones, Nicole Scherzinger and L.A. Reid after last night's "X Factor" elimination show, and someone had some pretty harsh words in regard to Simon's attitude. Of course, the master of mean had some harsh thoughts of his own to let loose...

It's so childish, yet so yummy."

"I have no idea what her problem was tonight, seriously," Cowell tells us. "Somebody was a little bit grumpy." And when we brought up the bad blood to the former Pussycat Doll, she just laughed it off. "I am pretty tough. I know how to handle [Simon] but sometimes I've just got to bite back," she says. "I can't help it, especially when he talks about me not connecting with my contestant when I know how hard I've worked with them and the time I've spent."

Speaking of those contestants, Simon revealed that he had a soft spot for Melanie, and even admitted to us that (gasp!) he was wrong. "Judging by the reaction tonight and the point that she proved, she is a class act, and I like the fact that she bounced back and she proved a point. And I was happy to admit I was wrong," he says. We don't understand a world in which Simon admits he made a mistake. Is the sky still up?

Exclusive: China eyes creation of ASEAN Bank (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China is considering a proposal to set up a regional bank to help its small and medium enterprises (SMEs) invest in Southeast Asian neighbors, fund infrastructure projects and promote development in southwestern China, two independent sources said.

After approval by the State Council, or cabinet, China would formally invite members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Japan and South Korea to each take a stake in the ASEAN Bank, said the sources, who have direct knowledge of the proposal.

China, the world's second biggest economy, is likely to be the bank's biggest single shareholder with an initial investment of up to 30 billion yuan ($4.7 billion), the sources said, requesting anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to reporters. The other countries' stakes still must be negotiated.

"ASEAN Bank will be a commercial bank and at the same time a policy bank," the first source told Reuters. "It will be a mini Asian Development Bank (ADB)."

The ADB was founded in 1966 to help fight poverty in Asia. The Manila-headquartered bank is owned and financed by its 67 member countries. Its president is traditionally from Japan, the lender's biggest donor along with the United States.

China hopes the ASEAN Bank will buy it some goodwill in Southeast Asia, providing low interest loans to infrastructure projects and Chinese SMEs investing there, the sources said.

The bank will also settle China-ASEAN trade in yuan, a step in China's long campaign to make the yuan, also known as renminbi or people's currency, a regional currency.

China's cabinet and the central bank declined immediate comment.

Vietnam's central bank said it had not received any information or an invitation to join. The Philippine central bank refused to comment. Central banks of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand could not be reached for comment.

CHINA-ASEAN TRADE SOARS

Trade between China and ASEAN members has soared since a bilateral Free Trade Agreement took effect in 2010.

The ASEAN bloc overtook Japan to become China's third-largest trading partner this year after the European Union and the United States. China-ASEAN trade accounted for 10 percent of China's total trade in the first nine months of 2011.

China is ASEAN's biggest trading partner. Two-way trade rose 26.4 percent to $267 billion in the first nine months, an $18.9 billion surplus in favor of ASEAN, Chinese customs data show.

China wants the bank in the southern Guangxi region, where it hopes it can help transform the area into southwest China's financial center.

"Southwest China needs a financial center to balance east-west development," the second source said, referring to China's wealthy coastal provinces and impoverished hinterland.

"Guangxi and (neighboring) Yunnan (province) will play a key role in regionalization of the yuan," the source added.

Reuters reported last week that China plans to sign a framework agreement with ASEAN to settle trade in yuan, formalizing a pilot program put in place in 2009.

State news agency Xinhua confirmed that report on Saturday, quoting Jin Qi, an assistant to the central bank governor.

But Gavin Bowring, a Hong Kong-based analyst with research firm GaveKal Dragonomics, said Nanning -- Guangxi's regional capital -- would find it difficult to compete against nearby Chengdu and Chongqing as the epicenter of western China.

"Though Nanning is a suitable geographical location to spur ties with ASEAN countries, it is mainly a convenient spot only for neighboring Vietnam and Laos, and to a lesser extent Thailand and Myanmar," Bowring said.

"Having said that, it appears Malaysian companies are investing in infrastructure, real estate and other projects in Nanning so there is some credence to the plan," he added.

HELP FOR CHINESE ENTERPRISES

The new bank will facilitate new business opportunities for Chinese SMEs -- a pillar of the economy but which have been squeezed by a Beijing-led credit clampdown, a firmer yuan, falling export orders and rising land and labor costs.

"It will resuscitate SMEs abroad rather than (let them) die at home," the first source said.

Many cash-strapped SMEs are drowning after turning to loan sharks who charge exorbitant interest rates. Scores of SME bosses have gone into hiding or fled abroad.

China plans to create a vice-ministerial level agency to facilitate lending to SMEs.

The 10-member ASEAN, ranging from resource-rich Indonesia to financial center Singapore, is planning a union by 2015 to become a single market and production base to compete with rising Asian powerhouses China and India.

Despite friction with several ASEAN members over overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea, China is keen to boost ties with its economies, which it relies on for commodities and energy supplies, such as natural gas and crude palm oil, to keep the Chinese economic engine humming.

The region, home to 600 million people and a combined GDP of $2 trillion, is also angling for foreign investment.

Obama: shouldn't "relish" Gaddafi death footage (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama took issue on Tuesday with the broadcasting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's bloody demise, saying even those who had done "terrible things" deserved decorum in death.

Gaddafi was buried in a secret desert location on Tuesday, five days after he was captured, killed and put on grisly public display. The former leader was seen on video being mocked, beaten and abused before he died.

"That's not something that I think we should relish," Obama told Jay Leno on NBC's "Tonight Show," when asked his feelings about the footage being televised. "I think that there's a certain decorum with which you treat the dead even if it's somebody who has done terrible things."

Obama noted that his administration had not released a photograph of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's body after U.S. commandos killed him in Pakistan earlier this year.

The president said Gaddafi had missed a chance to bring democracy to his country.

"You never like to see anybody come to the kind of end that he did, but I think it obviously sends a strong message around the world to dictators that ... people long to be free," Obama said.

"He had an opportunity during the Arab Spring to finally let loose of his grip on power and to peacefully transition into democracy. We gave him ample opportunity, and he wouldn't do it."

Obama was in the middle of a western state tour with stops in Nevada, California and Colorado, mixing White House business with events for his 2012 re-election campaign.

Asked by Leno if he had watched the debates by his potential Republican rivals, Obama demurred.

"I'm going to wait until everybody is voted off the island," he joked, to applause. "Once they narrow it down to one or two, I'll start paying attention."

Eight serious candidates are running for the Republican presidential nomination. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and businessman Herman Cain are seen as frontrunners.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

On lighter issues, the president said he had quit smoking "definitively." He continues to work out regularly but said his wife, Michelle, outperformed him in the exercise department.

"It's embarrassing sometimes," he said, describing work-outs in a White House gym.

"She'll get up there a half an hour earlier than me. She will have already run 10 miles or something."

Their kids, Obama said, are not allowed to watch television during the week and their oldest daughter, Malia, who has a cell phone, is only allowed to use it on the weekends.

Obama also revealed a distaste for reality-based television programs, when Leno challenged him for not liking a popular show about a reality star family, the Kardashians.

"I am probably a little biased against reality TV partly because, you know, there's this program on C-SPAN called 'Congress,'" Obama deadpanned. The president is in a heated battle with lawmakers in Congress over his stalled jobs bill.

Speaking of battles, the president pretended to fear a new one looming over Halloween because of the first lady's habit of handing out fruit to children instead of candy.

"She's been giving, for the last few years, kids fruit and raisins in a bag," he said. "And I said, "The White House is going to get egged if this keeps up."

More Android devices, more downloads than iOS

Google

Editors' Choice apps from the Android Market

By Athima Chansanchai

With so many more models than the iPhone, it's no wonder that Android devices have finally surpassed iOS in mobile app downloads, with 44 percent of the market share vs.?31 percent.

ABI Research released the figures Monday, at about the same time that another study showed a gain in Android apps ? 500,000 (vs. Apple's 600,000).

"Android?s open source strategy is the main factor for its success," says Lim Shiyang, an ABI?research associate, in a statement released with the findings. "Being a free platform has expanded the Android device install base, which in turn has driven growth in the number of third party multi-platform and mobile operator app stores. These conditions alone explain why Android is the new leader in the mobile application market."???

But in both cases,?it's not a pure numbers game.?Quantity doesn't necessarily translate to quality.

German-based research2guidance reported that more than 37 percent of the apps published in the Android Market were later removed "for various reasons, whereas the Apple App Store has removed just 24 percent of published apps in comparison."

It seems that since Apple is more discriminating about its apps, its users are also more appreciative of that screening process.

"Despite leading in total mobile application downloads, Android's app downloads per user still lag behind Apple?s by 2-to-1," adds ABI's Dan Shey, practice director of mobile services, in the same statement. "Apple's superior monetization policies attracted good developers within its ranks, thus creating a better catalog of apps and customer experience."

Overall though, it's an app-crazy world, with all downloads expected to hit 29 billion by the end of this year, compared to 9 billion last year. But let's be real ? it's so easy to tap that download button on just about anything that catches the eye, and you probably have a lot of apps that you never use, or just as quickly uninstall.

While one analyst interpreted a first-ever drop in U.S. smartphone sales as an indication that Android had hit its peak and was on its way down, the decline in the third quarter could also be attributed to those who were waiting for the next iPhone to arrive, or the next iteration of their particular Android?handset.

QE3 among Fed's remaining bullets, Dudley says (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Another round of quantitative easing is a possible option for the central bank as it attempts to boost the slow U.S. economic recovery, one of the most influential Fed officials said on Monday.

"I don't think the Fed has run out of bullets," said New York Federal Reserve President William Dudley, listing the large-scale asset purchases, known as quantitative easing, as one of a few moves the Fed could make.

"It's possible that we could do another round of quantitative easing, we could do quantitative easing round three," he told the Bronx Chamber of Commerce.

Dudley also listed a commitment to low interest rates for a longer period, and a change in the way the central bank does monetary policy that would commit it to stimulus for a longer period, as other possible bullets in the chamber.

"There are a number of things we could do to provide greater stimulus but there are costs associated with each of them," he said.

Faced with the worst recession in decades, the Fed in late 2008 cut rates to near zero and has since bought $2.3 trillion in bonds to spur a recovery. The two rounds of easing, known as QE1 and QE2, were unprecedented and controversial because the economic rebound has been weak and plagued by high unemployment.

Video: Researchers build transparent, super-stretchy skin-like sensor

Monday, October 24, 2011

Imagine having skin so supple you could stretch it out to more than twice its normal length in any direction - repeatedly - yet it would always snap back completely wrinkle-free when you let go of it. You would certainly never need Botox.

That enviable elasticity is one of several new features built into a new transparent skin-like pressure sensor that is the latest sensor developed by Stanford's Zhenan Bao, associate professor of chemical engineering, in her quest to create an artificial "super skin." The sensor uses a transparent film of single-walled carbon nanotubes that act as tiny springs, enabling the sensor to accurately measure the force on it, whether it's being pulled like taffy or squeezed like a sponge.

"This sensor can register pressure ranging from a firm pinch between your thumb and forefinger to twice the pressure exerted by an elephant standing on one foot," said Darren Lipomi, a postdoctoral researcher in Bao's lab, who is part of the research team.

"None of it causes any permanent deformation," he said.

Lipomi and Michael Vosgueritchian, graduate student in chemical engineering, and Benjamin Tee, graduate student in electrical engineering, are the lead authors of a paper describing the sensor published online Oct. 23 by Nature Nanotechnology. Bao is a coauthor of the paper.

The sensors could be used in making touch-sensitive prosthetic limbs or robots, for various medical applications such as pressure-sensitive bandages or in touch screens on computers.

The key element of the new sensor is the transparent film of carbon "nano-springs," which is created by spraying nanotubes in a liquid suspension onto a thin layer of silicone, which is then stretched.

When the nanotubes are airbrushed onto the silicone, they tend to land in randomly oriented little clumps. When the silicone is stretched, some of the "nano-bundles" get pulled into alignment in the direction of the stretching.

When the silicone is released, it rebounds back to its original dimensions, but the nanotubes buckle and form little nanostructures that look like springs.

"After we have done this kind of pre-stretching to the nanotubes, they behave like springs and can be stretched again and again, without any permanent change in shape," Bao said.

Stretching the nanotube-coated silicone a second time, in the direction perpendicular to the first direction, causes some of the other nanotube bundles to align in the second direction. That makes the sensor completely stretchable in all directions, with total rebounding afterward.

Additionally, after the initial stretching to produce the "nano-springs," repeated stretching below the length of the initial stretch does not change the electrical conductivity significantly, Bao said. Maintaining the same conductivity in both the stretched and unstretched forms is important because the sensors detect and measure the force being applied to them through these spring-like nanostructures, which serve as electrodes.

The sensors consist of two layers of the nanotube-coated silicone, oriented so that the coatings are face-to-face, with a layer of a more easily deformed type of silicone between them.

Using carbon nanotubes bent to act as springs, Stanford researchers have developed a stretchable, transparent skin-like sensor. The sensor can be stretched to more than twice its original length and bounce back perfectly to its original shape. It can sense pressure from a firm pinch to thousands of pounds. The sensor could have applications in prosthetic limbs, robotics and touch-sensitive computer displays. Darren Lipomi, a postdoctoral researcher in Chemical Engineering and Zhenan Bao, associate professor in Chemical Engineering, explain their work.Credit: Steve Fyffe, Stanford News Service

The middle layer of silicone stores electrical charge, much like a battery. When pressure is exerted on the sensor, the middle layer of silicone compresses, which alters the amount of electrical charge it can store. That change is detected by the two films of carbon nanotubes, which act like the positive and negative terminals on a typical automobile or flashlight battery.

The change sensed by the nanotube films is what enables the sensor to transmit what it is "feeling."

Whether the sensor is being compressed or extended, the two nanofilms are brought closer together, which seems like it might make it difficult to detect which type of deformation is happening. But Lipomi said it should be possible to detect the difference by the pattern of pressure.

With compression, you would expect to see sort of a bull's-eye pattern, with the greatest deformation at the center and decreasing deformation as you go farther from the center.

"If the device was gripped by two opposing pincers and stretched, the greatest deformation would be along the straight line between the two pincers," Lipomi said. Deformation would decrease as you moved farther away from the line.

Bao's research group previously created a sensor so sensitive to pressure that it could detect pressures "well below the pressure exerted by a 20 milligram bluebottle fly carcass" that the researchers tested it with. This latest sensor is not quite that sensitive, she said, but that is because the researchers were focused on making it stretchable and transparent.

"We did not spend very much time trying to optimize the sensitivity aspect on this sensor," Bao said.

"But the previous concept can be applied here. We just need to make some modifications to the surface of the electrode so that we can have that same sensitivity."

German satellite crashed over Bay of Bengal

Heavily populated Asian cities avoided a dangerous collision with space junk last weekend as a defunct German satellite crashed into the sea somewhere between India and Myanmar.

The ROSAT satellite re-entered the atmosphere at 0150 GMT Sunday (9:50 p.m. Saturday EDT) above South Asia's Bay of Bengal, but it remains unclear how much, if any, of its debris actually reached the sea's surface, the German Aerospace Center said Tuesday.

Most of the 21-year-old satellite was expected to burn up as it hit the atmosphere, but up to 30 fragments weighing a total of 1.87 tons (1.7 metric tons) may have splashed into the sea.

Scientists could no longer communicate with the defunct satellite, let alone control it.

Two Chinese cities with millions of residents each, Chongqing and Chengdu, were only minutes further northeast along the satellite's projected path, according to Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The 2.69-ton (2.4 metric ton) scientific ROSAT satellite was launched in Cape Canaveral, Florida, in 1990 and retired in 1999 after being used for research on black holes and neutron stars.

A dead NASA satellite fell into the southern Pacific Ocean last month, causing no damage but spreading debris over a 500-mile (800-kilometer) area.

Since 1991, space agencies have adopted new procedures to lessen space junk. NASA says it has no more large satellites that will fall back to Earth uncontrolled in the next 25 years.

Fed's Dudley: Europe among economy's big headwinds (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? New York Federal Reserve President William Dudley said on Monday the U.S. economy still faces serious headwinds, including "spillover" effects from Europe, adding the central bank will continue to do everything within its power to help.

Europe's sovereign debt crisis has weakened the outlook for global growth and with it, U.S. exports, Dudley said in a speech to Fordham University's Gabelli School of Business.

He also listed problems in the housing market as a main stumbling block for the U.S. economy, calling it "a serious impediment" to a stronger recovery, which this year has been plagued by "quite disappointing" GDP growth.

"Without robust growth, the economy is more vulnerable to negative shocks, which unfortunately seem to keep coming," the influential U.S. central banker said in the Bronx. "It is like riding a bicycle -- at a slow speed, the bicycle wobbles and the risk of falling rises."

Faced with the worst recession in decades, the Fed in late 2008 cut rates to near zero and has since bought $2.3 trillion in bonds to spur a recovery. Yet the rebound has been weak and is now threatened by Europe's debt crisis, casting doubt on the central bank's strategy and effectiveness but also raising some expectations for more asset purchases.

"The Fed is doing -- and will continue to do -- everything within its power to promote jobs and price stability," Dudley said.

Slow U.S. economic growth has not been able to ease unemployment, which has been at 9 percent or higher the last six months. Inflation has also been higher than the Fed's preferred level of 2 percent after a period this year of lofty gas and commodities prices.

The inflation rate should fall late this year and next, barring more energy price jumps, Dudley said.

"I believe that underlying fundamentals will help to subdue inflation over the next few quarters," he said.

Last month, the Fed reached deep into its tool box and announced Operation Twist. The plan replaces $400 billion of short-term securities in its portfolio with longer-term ones to lower longer-term rates, and stimulate the economy.

Dudley said the move should provide some additional support for growth.

Europe's sovereign debt crisis, meanwhile, threatens to drag the world into another recession as policymakers there wrangled this past weekend over a possible Greek default and its impact on the European banking system.
