Palm oil giant Felda flies high in IPO

Shares of Malaysian palm oil giant Felda soared as much as 20 percent in their first day of trading yesterday, overcoming weakness in global stock markets after the company completed the world?s biggest initial public offering (IPO) this year after Facebook.

State-backed Felda Global Venture Holdings hit a high of 5.46 ringgit shortly after listing on the main board of Bursa Malaysia, up from its IPO price of 4.55 ringgit. It eased to 5.29 ringgit at the end of the morning session.

Felda?s first-day jump defies sustained weakness in global stock markets and reflects strong investor interest in the world?s third-largest palm oil company.

It also offset worries over a lower-than-expected net profit in the quarter through March.

Felda raised about 10 billion ringgit (US$3.1 billion) in the largest IPO in Asia this year. It is the second-biggest in the world after Facebook, which raised US$16 billion, but suffered a slumping share price after its listing last month. A volatile global economy has led to the shelving of several major IPOs in Asia, including a planned US$2.5 billion share sale by Formula One in Singapore and a US$1.5 billion listing of London-based Graff Diamonds in Hong Kong.

However, Felda?s IPO was supported by 12 institutional investors, including Qatar Investment and French agribusiness giant Louis Dreyfus.

Feldal president Sabri Ahmad said the share price was within expectations. He said Felda, which also plants rubber and sugar cane, would expand in Southeast Asia and Africa.

?Food business is quite resilient in a recession,? he said.

The IPO had met resistance from thousands of ethnic Malay farmers, who partly own the company and fear they would lose out. However, its strong trading debut is expected to help quell concerns and will boost Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is expected to call general elections this year. Felda was set up by the government in the 1950s as part of a rural development plan to alleviate poverty by giving poor Malaysians land to grow cash crops, mainly palm oil and rubber.

Najib has assured the farmers that the listing would be profitable for them, and promised a 1.68 billion ringgit windfall for the farmers and their families. Felda has also allocated 20 percent of its shares to a trust fund for the farmers, who will receive annual dividends, officials said.

The Felda group owns 70 palm oil mills, seven refineries and a string of other manufacturing plants nationwide. It produces about 3 million tonnes of crude palm oil annually, or about 8 percent of world output.

After Felda, Asia?s largest hospital operator, Integrated Healthcare Holdings, is also planning an IPO that could raise as much as 1.9 billion ringgit.

A very serious patent situation for Android-based products, and upcoming troubles for Motorola, Nokia, and others.

Apple has won a patent infringement lawsuit that has the ability (and likelihood according to some) of

1) stopping the US import of ANY Android-based product
2) causing almost immediate loss of effective support for ANY Android-based product

Apple secures injunction against Samsung Galaxy Tab in ENTIRE European Union (except Netherlands)

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/apple-secures-injunction-against...ag=nl.e539

20110809

Summary: Samsung has suffered what is arguably its worst setback yet in its international battle with Apple over the Galaxy Tab.
Apple has scored a major victory as a German court has granted a preliminary injunction against the distribution of Samsung?s Galaxy Tab 10.1 throughout the entire European Union, with the exception of The Netherlands...
With Europe out of the game, at least for the near future, it?s going to have a lot trouble making any kind of profit off this device--if that ever even happens...
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company recently garnered another win against Samsung in Australia, where the Android-based tablet is being temporarily blocked from promotion and sale....

The article talks about how "generic" the Apple design was, and seems to suggest this should somehow prevent Apple from having an "unfair" patent that can limit others from using this "generic" design.

What the writer may not understand is that it is the GOAL of every patent writer/inventor to make their patent as "generic" as possible, as broad as possible, to cover the largest possible population of future inventions/devices in the real world.

If my patent is approved, that makes it so future inventors MUST come to me to get permission and a license to build their device (technically EVEN for personal use). So, I have the power of life and death over their product, and I can demand a piece of their pie...or shut them down. I am under NO obligation to let them build or sell their product, and the public have no right to demand that I do so. The government may do so, but only under certain conditions...in the past, in some cases, even WAR has been ruled an insufficient legal reason to make an inventor give-away a license to produce anything that uses part or all of his/her patent (e.g. a new machine-gun design).

For example, instead of inventing a two-wheeled bicycyle, I would patent a design that describes a "mass-moving unit" (MMU) with ANY number of wheels, type of wheels, and maybe even any type of "ground-to-MMU friction-reducing ability". It's just that ONE specific implementation could be 2 wheels and a metal frame in one case, but it could apply just as well to an anti-gravity field that someone hasn't even invented yet. It would also apply to carts, cars, hovercraft, jet-packs, airplanes, etc....If written properly and broadly enough, a really successful patent would legally cover literally anything that uses any mechanism to reduce friction between the ground and the "mass-moving unit".

Apple's patent could prevent all OEMs from building tablets
"....But if Apple can get an injunction against the Galaxy Tab, what?s to stop it getting similar injunctions against other Android tablets from other maker? Heck, what?s to stop it going after Windows 8 tablets once they are available?...."

Wtf! I bet Apple will soon win a patent over "a rectangle shaped device that uses electricity". Seriously this system is flawed as hell, I'd like to see how this patent will start to affect phone sales.

There you go being just too dog-gone specific again, Meats. Back to patent class for you. ;)

Don't limit it to "uses electricity". Write the patent with "manipulates string quanta" instead.

Otherwise all someone has to do to get around your silly patent is to invent an "ellipsoidal"(1) device that uses gravity, or anti-protons, dilithium crystals...hell, maybe even ZPMs or Chriss Angel.

(1)The "ellipsoidal" shape can even look very much like a "rectangle shaped device" by simply being "smooshed" appropriately in the axes to the point where it is just short of actually being one. Think of a smooth elongated, somewhat wide, and thin "skipping" stone (with truncated ends) from a river. It's an ellipsoid...and technically not a cuboid (derived from a rectangle).

I feel that there are several worrying implications that may develop from this, and some that are already developing.

In the first instance, the European block on Samsung?s products has been deliberately heard in the German court that has, historically, generally found in favour of the plaintiff in patent cases. Apple are clearly aware of this, and have targeted them specifically. A ruling in an EU member state in this manner automatically covers all EU member states; again, Apple is clearly aware of this.

The second thing that concerns me is, what appears to be some sort of backroom deal that Apple could be doing with members of the judiciary, in the USA as well as Europe, because I can see that some manipulation is clearly being brought to bear here. The reason I think this is because of the manner in which both the EU and USA rulings against Samsung have come about.

In the USA case, what basically happened is: one party made a complaint against a second party, and the second party were censured because of this, however, they were not allowed to see the evidence against them. Apple said the GT10.1 was a bit too much like the new iPad, and Samsung were ordered to hand over a GT10.1 for Apple to examine, but when Samsung asked for an iPad to compare to the GT, they were told ?No?.

In the EU case, what happened is: one party made a complaint against a second party, and the second party were censured because of this without even being given a chance to respond to the allegations.

Now, as far as I?m aware, the fundamental constitutions of both the EU and the USA give people the right to due process, and I believe this may have been bent, or even broken in these cases, and it?s my feeling that this is setting a dangerous precedent.

Now, I think what Apple?s trying to do here is not stop Samsung producing their direct competition to Apple?s flagship product, but simply to delay things for a year or so in the court system, which will effectively render the Samsung product obsolete; I?m sure we all know how long a year is in the world of technology. It also strikes me that the reason Apple has gone into the EU case with such zeal is, having seen the GT10.1 (following the case in the USA) they?ve realised just how strong a competitor it?s going to be in the tablet market, and they?re outright scared.

I don?t think we?re going to see just how much of a messy fight this is going to be until Google themselves get involved. I think they are Apple?s real target in all this.

I would have titled this,

Has Google cut it's Android's throat?
It should be noted that violating the Linux GPL "...will automatically terminate your rights under this License."

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/have-many-android-vendors-l...inux/14210

Have many Android vendors lost their rights to distribute Linux?

Does section 4 of the GPL version 2 mean that many (if not all) Android vendors have already lost their rights to distribute Linux?

According to an IP litigator, the answer is yes.

...by refusing to make freely available the GPL?d portions of Honeycomb, Google is forcing its OEM partners into a situation of non-compliance with the GPL.

Naughton believes that this puts OEMs, and even Google itself, in a really bad position

Evidence is now coming to light as to Apple?s (possibly underhand) tactics in the German case, along the lines of what my earlier intimations suggested:

First off, they altered the image to make the new Tab10.1 look more like an iPad:

Dutch website Webwereld has compared the some of the images from the court documents? ?to reality and found some disturbing differences. In Apple's images, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been shown with a different aspect ratio (1:36 as opposed to the actual 1:46 -- the iPad is 1:30), causing it to more closely resemble the dimensions of the iPad.

Additionally:

?the Samsung logo has been removed from Apple's image

And, the unit pictured was:

?shown with the app drawer open instead of the normal home screen view

So much for, ?The evidence I shall give will be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?

Capital! :))

The injunction preventing sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been suspended across Europe except for in Germany where the slate is still prohibited from sale.

However, curiously...

There's no indication yet if the allegedly inaccurate images of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that were submitted as evidence by Apple had any bearing on the suspension of the injunction.

I think patent laws are illegal, the only way a patent law should be enforced is if it can be proven that the infringement was intentional and the new creation was based on the patented device.

That was some evil stuff Apple did.

Google has sold a number of patents to HTC so that the mobile-manufacturer can sue Apple.

The nine patents, which Google itself bought from Motorola, Palm and other companies less than a year ago, concern Google?s Android operating system. In a sign both that Google is unwilling to sue Apple directly and also that the ?patent wars? between major manufacturers are further hotting up, HTC has now filed claims against Apple, while also itself being sued by the iPhone maker.

After issuing press release after press release touting the Android patent-protection deals it had signed in the past few months, Microsoft went back and added a new Linux licensee to its patent-deal roster.

On September 20, Microsoft officials said that Microsoft and Casio Computer Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Casio Worldwide, had entered into a ?a broad, multiyear patent cross-licensing agreement that, among other things, will provide Casio?s customers with patent coverage for their use of Linux in certain Casio devices.?

Qualcomm Extends Vuforia Augmented Reality Platform To The Cloud (Video)

vuforia3Qualcomm announced an upgrade to their Vuforia Augmented Reality platform on Wednesday. Vuforia is a platform that focuses on using images as the "targets" to launch an AR experience, rather than requiring consumers to scan QR codes or other glyphs. So instead of scanning a barcode, you just scan a specific picture to start the AR experience on your mobile phone or tablet (it could launch a video, or a 3D model, etc.) There are many AR companies that employ this method of recognizing images. That is nothing new. The difference here is that the old version of Vuforia required the database of images that are the "targets" to be stored locally on the device running their software and therefore had a limited capacity of storage (around 80 images). This new system allows developers to continue using local app storage of image targets but they can also now implement programatic, API-based access to up to 1 million targets using a new cloud database system.

Birth mom: I raised questions about Jerry Sandusky

In a Friday, June 22, 2012 photo, Jerry Sandusky is escored from the Centre County courthousein Bellefonte, Pa., after being found guilty on child molestation charges. Jurors announced the verdict Friday night after weighing 48 charges accusing him of abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period. (AP Photo/The Patriot-News, Sean Simmers)

Nearly two decades before Matt Sandusky's blockbuster allegation that he was sexually abused by his adoptive father, his biological mother raised questions about their relationship.

Debra Long fought the court system over her son's placement in the home of the famed Penn State assistant football coach, who was convicted Friday of sexually abusing 10 boys.

Her objections, which she discussed in a December interview with The Associated Press, add a new dimension to the grim trial testimony that illustrated how Sandusky wooed the victims he culled from his charity for at-risk youth.

Prosecutors said Sandusky used gifts, trips and access to Penn State's vaunted football program to attract and abuse vulnerable boys he met through the charity, The Second Mile.

"If they'd have listened, these boys didn't have to be abused," Long said. "They would have found the problem back then, and a whole lot of kids wouldn't be victims now."

Instead, she said, "we couldn't get anything done. It was Jerry Sandusky. He started The Second Mile home. He could've done nothing wrong."

Matt Sandusky said that Jerry Sandusky, once Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno's heir apparent, began sexually abusing him in the late 1980s, when he was 8 years old, and continued until he was 15, according to a police interview recording that NBC aired Tuesday.

He was placed in foster care with the Sandusky family in January 1995, about a month after he set fire to a barn and several months after Long tried to cut him off from Sandusky and The Second Mile.

Matt Sandusky, who was adopted after he turned 18, described for investigators showering with the ex-coach and trying to avoid being groped in bed, according to the police recording. He said he was undergoing therapy, that his memories of abuse were only now surfacing and that he was coming forward so his family would know what happened.

His attorneys confirmed the recording's authenticity to the AP, but declined to comment beyond a statement.

"Although the tape was released without Matt's knowledge or permission, it illustrates that he made the difficult decision to come forward and tell the painful truth to investigators despite extraordinary pressure to support his father," the lawyers, Justine Andronici and Andrew Shubin, wrote in the statement.

Jerry Sandusky hasn't been charged with abusing his son. Unless Matt Sandusky alleges rape, which he didn't do in the police recording, the ex-coach cannot be charged criminally based on his son's accusations, because of the statute of limitations.

In the December interview with the AP, Long said that Sandusky was pushy, was controlling and estranged Matt from his birth family ? but that Centre County's court system ignored her concerns because of Sandusky's stature.

Long did not return several messages left for her on Monday and Tuesday.

Records provided to AP by Long in December show that after Matt Sandusky attempted suicide in 1996, his probation officer wrote, "The probation department has some serious concerns about the juvenile's safety and his current progress in placement with the Sandusky family."

Despite those concerns, probation and child welfare officials recommended continued placement with the Sandusky family, and the judge overseeing his case agreed.

Centre County President Judge Thomas Kistler, who joined the bench in 1997 and was not involved in Matt Sandusky's juvenile case, said he saw "legitimate questions" about the decision to keep Long's son in the Sandusky home, but "I can't shed any light on them."

Speaking generally, he said nearly every birth parent objects when the state decides to remove a child from the home.

"These kinds of decisions made by judges and social workers are very emotionally charged. I don't think the parents have ever agreed with me on any of the cases where I've taken the kids," he said.

In the early years of his relationship with Jerry Sandusky, Matt would hide behind a bedroom door and beg his mother to tell the coach he wasn't home when he spotted Sandusky pulling in the driveway, Long said.

Her son never said why.

"Nobody could ever get that out of him. But then again, Matt was afraid of Jerry," she said.

Long said Matt was a good kid but began acting out after Sandusky entered the picture, and his behavior got progressively worse. She became alarmed by Sandusky's controlling behavior and tried to stop visitation in the fall of 1994.

But Sandusky continued taking Matt out of school, without her knowledge or consent, she said.

"I didn't like his treatment of Matt," she said. "I thought he was a little too possessive, and it was my son, not his son."

In early December 1994, Matt set fire to a barn. He spent his 16th birthday, on Dec. 26, in juvenile detention. On Jan. 6, 1995, records show, he was placed in foster care ? with the Sandusky family.

Long said she knew Matt would be placed in a Second Mile foster home but didn't think it would be with the Sandusky family. Of all the foster families in Centre County, "he had to end up with that one," she said. It struck her as odd.

"Jerry told Matt that he had a judge ready to sign the order and nobody could stop it," she said. "He told Matt before we ever went to court that I wouldn't win against him. Matt came right to me and told me, he said, 'Mom, Jerry said you wouldn't win against him.'"

Long was initially limited to a half-day a month with her son. Her lawyer repeatedly petitioned the judge for greater access.

Matt attempted suicide in March 1996, swallowing 80 to 100 pills, according to the probation department report.

He referred to it in the recent police interview.

"I know that I really wanted to die at that point in time," he said.

But he nevertheless indicated he wanted to remain in the Sandusky home.

"I would like to be placed back with the Sandusky's, I feel that they have supported me even when I have messed up," Matt Sandusky wrote shortly after the suicide attempt. "They are a loving caring group of people."

Long said she once called the Sandusky house when Matt's biological brother, Ronald, was in an accident. She said Sandusky's wife, Dottie, answered the phone and said, "What are you calling him for? It's no longer his brother."

"I said, 'I'm sorry, but the same blood courses through his veins (that) courses through his brother's veins. They're not separated by a name change,'" Long recalled. "She was downright rude."

The AP was unable to contact Dottie Sandusky.

Jerry and Dottie Sandusky couldn't conceive children, according to his autobiography, and adopted six children. None of the other five has commented on their father's legal case or Matt Sandusky's allegations. Messages left for them were not returned.

Matt Sandusky said, according to the NBC recording, that he decided to come forward after publicly standing by his dad, for his family, "so that they can really have closure and see what the truth actually is. And just to right the wrong, honestly, of going to the grand jury and lying."

Pipe Problems? Try These Great Tips On Plumbing! | DocsFolder.com

When you are trying to do plumbing repairs yourself, you need to know how to start. There are a lot of things to think about, including which tools to buy and what regulations you need to follow. Continue reading to find all the knowledge you?ll need to fix your own plumbing and even install new fixtures!

Avoiding frozen pies is easy if you ensure no area of your house ever falls below freezing and that any pipes which are exposed to such temperatures are protected with insulation. Pipes will freeze if they are exposed to temperatures below freezing. The best result you can hope for from frozen pipes is to be without water until the pipes thaw. The worst case scenario is a busted pipe and a costly repair.

|Drain cleaners should be avoided, if possible. Drain cleaners use abrasive chemicals that are not only harmful to you but also to your pipes. If your drain is clogged, hire a pro to figure out the problem.

|Do not use a drain cleaner if you can help it. Drain cleaners contain caustic and damaging chemicals which can destroy your pipes if used too often. Sometimes, finding a professional to fix a blocked drain is the best way to solve the problem.

|You might not be able to control which plumber you have to use, but you can find out all you can about them on the Internet. If your insurance provider has set up the appointment, check the company website to see customer reviews and feedback. This allows you to have some information before they arrive.

|Some items, such as bananas, carrots, pumpkin and chicken skins are terrible for blades and they can be caught in the drain and clog it. Throw out hard-to-grind things in a garbage can first, and then place the rest of the food in the disposal.

|If you work as a professional plumber, think about taking an apprentice with you. Two key advantages to doing so are the fulfillment and satisfaction of passing on your knowledge to the next generation, and having inexpensive labor on hand.

|You should avoid using blue toilet tablets, bleach tablets or any other odor removers in your toilet. Both of these may help to eliminate odors from your toilet, but it can also damage the rubber parts of your toilet, causing it to not function probably, or even to break down completely.

|Every member of your household needs a little plumbing knowledge, most especially where the shut-off valves are in your house, and how and when to use them. That will ensure that any time an emergency occurs it can be stopped in short order before real damage is done. Each person will be capable of stopping the water flow and able to shut off the system.

|When you are figuring out a problem with your toilet, your flapper might be your issue. The flapper is going to deteriorate as time passes, and flapper problems cause most leaky toilets. Your first step is to check that the chain?s pressure is correctly set. If the chain is fine, replace the flapper, as it is likely the culprit.

|Many people fear plumbing since it may destroy their homes. This can be avoided if you are aware of one thing. Know where you can find the water register in your home, and how you can turn it off.

Cleaning your in-sink garbage disposal can extend its lifetime significantly. You can prevent annoying odors and promote smooth operation by setting up a regular cleaning routine with lemon rinds, dish soap, and even cherry pits.

|The plumbing world is filled with amateurs. If you are more experienced, it might be helpful for you to look for an apprentice. Not only is this a good way to have cheap labor, it is also very fulfilling to pass on what you know to a younger person.

|You don?t have to call a plumber at the first sign of trouble. If the problem is not that serious, you can wait until you have more problems. Check all of your plumbing fixtures, note any problems and write them down so you don?t forget anything. Once you have your list, you are then ready to call the plumber. This way, there?s only one charge for the service, instead of the plumber needing to make multiple trips.

|Schedule all your plumbing work at the same time. You may want to have each minor problem attended to as the occur, but having multiple repairs done at once allows you to save up for the cost. Doing this can also save you money, since it?s common for plumbers to charge hourly rates. It?ll condense the total amount of time they need to spend to something you can more easily afford.

|To increase the useful life of your garbage disposal, clean it out regularly. By regularly using a mixture of dish soap, cherry pits and citrus rinds, you can ensure that your disposal runs smoothly and smells as fresh as one that is brand new.

|Inspect around the toilets for softness in the floors to see if any damage has occurred. Straddle the toilet, then start rocking on each foot to check whether you feel softness or weakening on the floor under you. This will save you a lot of trouble and money if you find the issue before something horrible happens.

|Frozen pipes can cause you to incur expensive plumbing repair bills. However, you can generally avoid this happening in the first place. Make sure that any outdoor pipes are well insulated. When it is cold outside make sure you bring in your hoses or at least drain them. Taking proper precautions can save you lots of money on plumbing bills.

|A normal pipe snake can clean out your washing machine?s drain stack if it backs up. This can be caused by things that go through your wash and eventually build up in your pipes.

|A sewage backup into the toilet is caused by problems often deep within the sewage line. If you have tried and cannot remove the blockage, you will need a plumber to come to your home and run the plumbing snake down into the toilet to clear the blockage.

|If you find there is water accumulating near the heating element in your home, shut off the water in your home immediately. Any delay on your part will give a little leak time to turn into a big one, causing more damage, requiring more work, and being generally harder to stop.

Check your pipes regularly for wear and tear. Replace any worn out or broken parts. You can make temporary fixes using foam to plug up leaks and holes, but it is, of course, temporary. Get a new part and fix that problem correctly.

|To maintain a clean, well-functioning septic tank, it is recommended that you clean it out once every five years. This will keep sediment from building and causing backup into the house, and possibly causing the septic system to fail. White it is somewhat expensive to pump the septic tank, it will be much more expensive should you need to clean backup, repair your septic tank or replace it altogether.

|If you notice a leak somewhere in your walls, turn off the water supply, and contact a plumber at once. This may indicate that your plumbing is seriously damaged. Many problems of that scale can contribute to mildew, mold and possibly flooding.

|Make sure that any pipes that are exposed are receiving some form of heat in order to prevent freezing during the cold seasons. When it?s extremely cold outside, it?s likely that the pipes you have outside will start to freeze. Pipes inside the home can also freeze if they run from outdoors. Make sure you use a heater to keep water flowing through them.

|Garden hoses need to disconnected and drained during the winter months. If you do not drain and disconnect them, they can cause damage to the water pipes that run through your house that they are connected to. If there?s a hose hook up in the garage, and it stays above freezing, you can safely leave it attached.

|To help you prevent faucet and sink leaks, you should perform regular maintenance. Proper maintenance can save you money, help you avoid mold and eliminate the need for a plumber. A small leak in a pipe can drastically increase the size of your water bill. This will also help prevent general wear and tear on your pipes.

|A lot of people do not know what to do about their plumbing issues so they pay a plumber big bucks! If you own a home, you should be educated in what the professional is doing. This will go a long way towards ensuring that the plumber does not take advantage of you by overcharging.

|Fix low water pressure by cleaning out the aerator to clean out sediment buildup. Take apart the faucet, and clean the aerator with vinegar and a small brush. Rinse off the aerator then reassemble and reattach to the faucet. This should raise the water pressure nicely because anything that was inside of the aerator will be removed.

|Never pour grease or anything fatty or oily into your drain. They can clog your drains once they cool down. This is very true for garbage disposal, since fat will make the blades run less quickly and efficiently. Dump your oil outside or in a container that you throw out with the regular trash.

|Rarely used valves can sometimes fuse together. Maintain them with penetrating oil, and rotate them every so often so they don?t stick.

Certain foods, such as chicken skin, carrots, pumpkin and banana skins can clog the drain. Instead, simply throw these items into the trash can, not into the disposal.

|When cleaning fiberglass bathtubs, sinks and counters, make sure to only use non-abrasive cleaners like laundry detergent and dish washing liquid for the hands. These types of cleaners are easier for your pipes when compared to other types of drain cleaners, and they also do not have the harsh chemicals.

|Make sure a new shower head is of high quality. People try to save money by buying the least expensive shower head that is out there. This is not the case though. The cheaper models usually are low quality and will break easier than a high quality fixture.

|If you need plumbing fixtures, think seriously about brass. For one, brass fixtures are far tougher and longer-lasting. Brass is also more attractive to the eye than typical fixtures. You can find these in any home improvement type of store.

|Have a professional flush your septic tank every five years or so to keep it working well. Doing so will help to avoid septic tank problems by ensuring that the tank does not become clogged with sediment. It may be a bit expensive to pump a septic tank, but it will be very expensive to clean up an emergency sewage problem.

|Use enzyme based cleaners when cleaning clogged pipes. Enzyme based pipe cleaners utilize natural bacteria to attack the clog and dissolve it so it can be washed away. Enzyme cleaners should be your first choice.

|Obnoxiously loud pipes that like to squeal and hammer are easy situations to correct. Exposed pipes will have to be anchored. You might want to contact a professional when the pipes are hard to access.

|When winter is on the horizon, it is particularly important to check your outside water fixtures to ensure they aren?t leaking or dripping. If water is continually dripping, you need to make some repairs on your own before the temperature drops below freezing. Regardless of the material of your particular pipes, whether it be copper, steel or plastic, water pressure from freezing water will cause pipes to crack. One small crack is all it takes to cause serious water damage to your home.

|Make sure your connection is very tight, by using the kind sealant that is specific to galvanized steel or threaded plastics. Check with your local hardware store to find what you?re looking for.

|Having plumbing tools around the house may feel like an unnecessary and expensive choice, but the tools could save you tons of money in the long run. The World Wide Web has many different video files that show you how to repair your plumbing. If you have the correct tools, you need not hire a professional plumber to deal with any minor issues that crop up.

Keep grease, fat and oil out of your kitchen drain. When they cool off, they become hard and will clog your pipes. Especially if you operate a garbage disposal, the fat causes blades to be less efficient. You should dispose of all oils outside of the sink.

|Make sure your toilet is not leaking. An easy way to determine this is to add a couple drops of food coloring into the toilet tank. If you then see the colors show up in the bowl right away, you can be assured that there is an issue that should be addressed.

|It is important to know the location of the valve that cuts off water to your house. You should see a water meter located on it or close by. Toilets and sinks might have a cut-off valve of their own. Add marks to the valves so everyone in your household knows what direction to turn the valves in case they need to cut them off in case the need should arise.

|Put strainers in the bottoms of your drains to stop any clogging agents from escaping down the drain. You should clean your kitchen sink?s strainer every time there is a large particle that?s trapped in it. Strainers placed in a bathtub can be cleaned periodically.

|Avoid paying the plumber until he finishes the job. In some cases, you have to make a down payment prior to the first day of work. This is okay to do; however, don?t let your plumber talk you into paying the entire cost of a job before he?s finished, and never pay the whole cost before he?s even begun. It is good to know that the plumber did everything as promised before he gets his money.

|If your toilet is clogged, the water level in the toilet is low, and a plunger is not doing the trick, you may be able to resolve the problem by pouring a bucket of warm water into the toilet from waist level or higher. Repeat this as many times as necessary until your clog is gone, and you can flush normally once again.

|If you are seeing water at the bottom of the dishwasher, most likely this is due to a faulty setup of the hose that leads from the kitchen sink. A hose that is properly installed should lead uphill, then downhill, to discourage water from each area from mixing.

|If you need a plumber, check out his or her credentials first. A plumber with bad credentials might not be experienced enough to fix your problem. Ask around, and check online reviews. Your relatives and friends will likely know a plumber they will recommend.

|There are two easy methods to removing a stubborn clean-out plug. You can loosen the fitting with a hammer and a chisel. The only other method is to take the chisel and use it right through the plug.

|If you come across a pipe that is frozen, try to thaw it out by using a hairdryer. A low level heat source may take a little longer, but it?s safer and you can avoid having to call a plumber.

Knowing which tools to use and how you should use them is an important skill when it comes to plumbing. You should read the manual with any new tool you purchase. If you don?t have the manual, look online or at your local library for more information. You should do the same amount of research on the steps required for your project. Before attempting any repairs, plan ahead, or you may make a costly mistake.

|Hot water running through your copper plumbing lines can cause some minor expansion in the pipes. Your pipes may no longer fit inside pipe hangers, they may grind against it, and it could damage them. Taping around the pipe where it meets the hanger can prevent this problem.

|Pour equal parts baking soda followed by vinegar down your bathtub drain once a month. Seal off the drain with a conventional plug or a piece of fabric while the natural chemical reaction takes place. After letting it sit for a few moments, clear the pipes out with a gallon of boiling water. By taking these steps, you have a good chance of ridding your pipes of hair and soap scum.

|Don?t use abrasive cleaners to clean fiberglass items. If your sink or tub is made out of fiberglass, stick to non-abrasive materials such as liquid dish washing soap. Harsh chemicals can erode your pipes and lead to water damage, which makes these cleaners better overall.

|Look for water damage by looking at loose tiles. Loose tiles can be a warning of a leak in need of repair. In the tile area, gently press the floor or wall to detect any ?give.? By identifying loose tiles, you will be able to react more quickly to an unseen leak and repair the damage before it gets worse.

|Putting in shower heads that are energy-efficient can save you a lot of money in energy costs. The majority of hot water is consumed by showers. Investing just a few bucks in these newer shower heads can yield triple digit annual savings.

|Make sure that you check all of the connections after doing any work on a hot water heater, especially pipes that connect to the pipe used for drainage. These pipes help to recirculate the water in the tank, keeping it hot while using less water and energy.

|You should contact your local Consumer Affairs Department before you hire any plumber. They will tell you if their licenses are all up to date or if they have received any negative feedback. You don?t want to hire anyone who is not in good standing and has an expired, or non-existent, license.

|If your work is outdoors, pace yourself and don?t get overexposed to the sun. The heat of the sun is easy to forget when you are very involved in your work, but that does not mean that it becomes any less dangerous.

|Before hiring a plumber, check their credentials against the local licensing agency or municipal authority. They will tell you if their licenses are all up to date or if they have received any negative feedback. They need a current license that is in good standing, and if not then you should look elsewhere.

Make sure all the people in your home are informed on where the water shutoff valve is located, and other important connections. You definitely want everyone to be able to stop excess water from flooding your home and damaging flooring and baseboards. Everyone will then know what to do in case of a plumbing emergency.

|If a plumbing project is in your future, know two things: what tools you have, and how you are supposed to use them. Use as many resources as you need, such as online or the library, to find the right information to repair your plumbing issues. Be sure to have a plan ahead of time before trying any type of repair, it could very expensive to fix the mistake.

|For the conservation-minded consumer, it might be wise to purchase a tankless water heater. Tankless water heaters do not store water, they heat it when you need it! Not only will you save money, but you will also have more hot water available to you.

|If you get grout in your pipes, you won?t be able to get it out by yourself. With a little effort, you can get some of the grout broken down and on its way down the line. This works better with plastic than metal pipes. Calling a plumber can be expensive but damaging your pipes will cost a lot more.

|If you notice wear and tear on the plumbing system, that means it is probably time for you to replace used parts. You can make temporary fixes using foam to plug up leaks and holes, but it is, of course, temporary. Investing in a replacement will save you from stress, as well as potentially catastrophic bills later on.

|If your home operates on well water and you notice pink or orange stains in your bathtub and other fixtures, this is no doubt due to iron in the water. You can deal with use by using a water softener, which is something you can get on your own at a local retailer, or by hiring a professional to come out.

|Heading into the cold season is an ideal time of year to schedule a tune-up for the hot water tank system in your home. This will help your water tank heat more efficiently so that you can spend less money on utilities.

|Use chemicals or cleaning tools to prevent your pipes from getting clogged up. This is really important for pipes that are subject to penetration from tree roots, such as toilet drains that run outside.

|If you don?t want to spend a lot on repairing plumbing problems, learn to prevent problems before they occur. Clogged drains are a major problem that often requires professional help. Hair is one of the most common clog-producing materials. Stop hair from going down drains with a drain cover or screen designed for this purpose. It?s more convenient to remove hair before it has a chance to get down the drain and into the pipes.

|If you know what tools you should use, it can help you deal with your plumbing problems in the right way. You should read the manual with any new tool you purchase. If you don?t have the manual, look online or at your local library for more information. You should do the same amount of research on the steps required for your project. Have a good grasp of what you?re attempting to do before you do it, so you don?t have to repair your repair.

If the flapper is worn or damaged, or if you see the flapper seat covered in mineral deposits, this allows water to run continuously in the bowl, and that in turn can give you a much higher water bill. Replace the flapper and clean the flapper seat to solve the problem.

|Avoid the chemical drain cleaners if you need to unclog any drains. Despite the effectiveness of these products in unclogging pipes, the ingredients within them are not friendly to skin contact. Make sure you protect your hands and arms if you are still going to use these products.

|A flapper that does not function properly or that has a lot of build up on it will make your toilet less efficient. Replace and clean your flapper seat to resolve this.

|To prevent frozen pipes, always keep the living spaces in your house above freezing, even if you aren?t home. Any exposed pipes need to be insulated against the outdoor temperatures. The pipes may freeze if the surrounding temperature drops below freezing. Even in the best case scenario, it will take hours for thawing to happen before you have running water again. Frozen pipes can also burst, which can be very messy and expensive to repair.

|Use lots of cold water when you run your garbage disposal. The cold water helps the blades that are inside stay sharp, and will keep your disposal running smoothly. If you use hot water it will liquefy the grease, allowing it to accumulate in your drain causing your pipes to clog.

|Be sure to clean your dryer?s lint trap. By keeping it clean, you can prevent fires and other problems. Inspect your lint trap often to see if there are any tears or holes. If there are, you can have lint getting into your pipes, and this will clog them and give you more problems that will have to be dealt with.

|Don?t run the water when the garbage disposal is used. It is a common misconception that water will aid in flushing the food down the drain. The opposite is actually true. The running water can cause the disposal to clog, causing a plumbing problem.

|Choose which drain cleaners you use with care. Some of them contain strong chemical agents that will damage your pipes. Ensure you?re choosing a brand advertised as being a gentle one for your pipes. Not all chemical cleaners are good for your pipes?or for you. Some chemicals are toxic to humans. In addition, if a cleaner attacks bacteria indiscriminately, it may destroy helpful bacteria that keep the plumbing system running smoothly.

|Ensure that if something goes wrong in your garbage disposal that you resist any and all urges you have that might make you want to put your hands inside to fix a problem. Even if it is are switched off, a garbage disposal can be very dangerous. It?s advised to obtain a diagram, possibly off of the Internet, that depicts your machine in accurate detail.

|In the world of plumbing, there are many novices. As a professional, it may be in your best interest to take on a skilled apprentice. This will not just give you an inexpensive helping hand, it will also allow you to show an interested person the ins and outs of plumbing.

Tightening a pipe too much can be even worse than not tightening it enough. This can damage your threads or put a crack in the pipe, make sure you tighten it appropriately, and never over-tighten.

|To minimize potential problems with your toilet, avoid using it as a trash receptacle. Keep away from flushing improper items down the toilet, like cotton balls, diapers, paper towels, or feminine hygiene products. These types of items can clog your toilet as they do not dissolve. As well, keep your toilet paper usage to as little as possible.

|If one of your water pipes freezes, turn on the tap to the faucet nearest the pipe so that the water has somewhere to exit as the pipe thaws. This reduces pressure to keep the pipe from bursting, which could prevent a big mess in your home.

|It?s just as harmful, if not worse, to tighten your pipes too much when installing them as it is to leave them too loose. Only tighten until leaks are stopped, because going further can damage threads, and maybe cause pipe cracks.

|To make sure that your water heater is running efficiently, you need to know what size your hot water tank is. Determining the correct tank size is a matter of estimating the water use by the people and appliances in your home.

|Certain property owners are choosing to put in flood alarms for a portion of their entire system for home plumbing. Flood alarms and smoke alarms are somewhat similar in the way they operate. When water reaches a flood alarm, this battery-operated device will sound an alarm. Flood alarms let you know about any leaks or potential flooding.

|Ensure you insulate any pipes that are in spaces which get extremely cold during the winter time, such as crawl spaces, exterior walls, and attics. Home improvement stores sell easy to install insulation. Doing this not only prevents frozen pipes from bursting, but it also prevents water from losing heat as it travels through the pipes.

|Ensure that the overflow holes in your sinks are not clogged. Overflow holes exist to act as a double check in case of an overfilling sink. That may seem unimportant ? but it will become a problem if they are clogged. Take the time to clean out the overflow holes as you go through your house doing your regular checks for various issues.

|A competent plumber will need many skills in addition to knowing the basics of water and pipes. Of course, water lines are the most common items that a plumber will work on.

|Pipes that are exposed to extreme cold in winter should be insulated. This exposure may happen to pipes in the attic, basement, or pipes in outside walls. Insulation can be wrapped around pipes, and is available at any hardware store. Wrapping your pipes will save the possible aggravation of them bursting under freezing temperatures and it also keeps the water hot until it reaches your faucets or shower heads.

La Russa mulling over NL roster for All-Star game

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:54 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) - Tony La Russa is already thinking about which players he might add to the National League roster for next month's All-Star game.

La Russa retired after leading St. Louis to the World Series title last year. But Commissioner Bud Selig announced in January that La Russa would become the second retired manager to lead a team in the Midsummer Classic.

La Russa, who attended the NASCAR Sprint Cup stop in Sonoma on Sunday, said he has had a lot of conversations with longtime pitching coach Dave Duncan about the NL roster for the July 10 game in Kansas City.

"It's an important choice," he said. "I know within a few days we're going to get a roster and then you see what teams are not represented.

"I've enjoyed staying close (to it), trying to see who's hot and who deserves to be on the team."

When asked if Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey or Giants ace Matt Cain would get the start, La Russa also added Cardinals pitchers Adam Wainwright and Lance Lynn into the mix.

"I don't know yet for sure when their spot lines up," he said. "If a guy is going to pitch on Saturday, you think about if he's pitching Thursday or Friday then he's fresher. You'd like to get off the first inning or two with the guy you start and dominate the other side. I'm dancing (around this) as hard as I can dance."

La Russa spent 16 seasons in St. Louis and managed for 33 seasons overall. He is third on the career list with 2,728 wins, trailing second-place John McGraw by just 35 victories. This will be La Russa's sixth time managing an All-Star team, three in each league.

He agreed to work for Selig after stepping away from the Cardinals, but he doesn't see this as his last baseball job.

"I'm really fortunate that the commissioner has given me something to do," he said. "He knows that at some point I want to be involved with a team, not just in the dugout but in the front office with some responsibility of win or lose."

The 67-year-old La Russa also managed St. Louis to the title in 2006, when the Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers in five games in the World Series. One of the most memorable moments of that series occurred when La Russa prompted the umpires to ask Kenny Rogers to clean off his left hand during Game 2, concerned about a brown smudge on the base of his thumb.

Rogers insisted it was a mix of mud, resin, spit and dirt, but La Russa thought otherwise.

So naturally La Russa watched with some interest when Major League Baseball suspended Tampa Bay reliever Joel Peralta for eight games last week for having pine tar on his glove, "gobs of it," according to the former manager.

"The only thing that completes the story is especially in the cool weather, which is part of the case in the World Series, the balls are very glossy, slippery and so pine tar is something pitchers use to get a better grip and hitters are happy they use it," La Russa said. "So it's the point of grip versus too much to make it do strange things.

"It's one of those deals, if it gets excessive like Peralta, he got nailed and he took his punishment and he'll fix it. Eight days is precedent."

La Russa also visited the garage before Sunday's race, and was impressed with the scene

"In the end, all these drivers, you can feel all that intensity," he said. "Those guys are concentrating. I enjoy that a lot. . One winner. A bunch of losers. Tough way to make a living."

home improvement | bathroom flooring

When remodeling a bathroom, choosing the right flooring plays an integral part in helping you achieve the overall look that you are going for. In a small space, the floor covers a lot of surface area so you want it to not only be practical and durable, but you also want it to be aesthetically pleasing.

? For good reason, the old standby for bathrooms is tile. Ceramic, marble and stone tiles are water-resistant and withstand the rigors of bathroom life.

? If you are looking for something unique and creative, ask your bathroom remodeler about custom tile work or the possibility of a creating a mosaic out of smaller tiles.

? A more recent addition to the tile family is recycled glass tile. While glass tiles are usually used on walls, backsplashes and countertops they can also be used on bathroom floors. They aren?t as prone to breakage as you?d think but they can be slippery and scratch fairly easily. If you decide to go with glass tile, consider tiles with a sandblasted surface and talk to your home improvement expert about which brand would be most durable as flooring.

? Installing in-floor heating coils under your bathroom floor will help warm up an otherwise cool space. You can put in a timer so that the floor is toasty warm for your toes when you step in first thing in the morning.

? For a naturally warm and earthy feeling in the bathroom, you existing hardwood floors can be refinished or you can have new ones installed. An even more eco-friendly option would be to use salvaged or reclaimed wood. Wood in the bathroom must be well sealed to help it withstand the moisture and temperature fluctuations.

? Bamboo and cork are natural and sustainable alternatives to using hardwood in the bathroom. They each have their own unique properties but are both durable and are resistant to mold and mildew but we do recommend sealing them to protect them from water splashes. Cork is softer and warmer underfoot (and is my personal favorite).

? If you like the natural look of hardwood floors but aren?t comfortable putting wood in the bathroom, the perfect option is installing very real looking faux hardwood porcelain tiles. According to the bathroom remodeling experts at Indy Renovation, ?lining your bathroom with a porcelain tile mimicking hardwood is the way to go. It is creative, embraces nature, and is naturally resistant to mold and moisture.?

Taking on a bathroom renovation can be a daunting task but don?t let that stop you from creating the bathroom of your dreams with just the right flooring.

Turkey vows action against Syria for downing jet

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkey will take retaliatory steps against Syria for the downing of one of its military jets, President Abdullah Gul said Saturday, even as he suggested that the aircraft may have violated Syrian airspace.

It was not clear if Gul was suggesting military retaliation, increased sanctions against Syria or other possible steps, including demands for an apology, and his aide would not comment on his words. But Faruk Celik, Turkey's Labor and Social Security Minister, said Turkey would retaliate "either in the diplomatic field or give other types of response."

"Even if we assume that there was a violation of Syria's airspace ? though the situation is still not clear ? the Syrian response cannot be to bring down the plane," Celik told reporters.

"The incident is unacceptable," he said. "Turkey cannot endure it in silence."

Syria said Friday its forces had shot down a Turkish military plane that entered its air space. The plane, an unarmed F-4, went down in the Mediterranean Sea about 8 miles (13 kilometers) from the Syrian town of Latakia, Turkey said.

The incident further escalated tensions between Syria and NATO-member Turkey. The two neighbors used to be allies before the Syrian revolt began in March 2011, but Turkey has become one of the strongest critics of the Syrian regime's brutal response to the country's uprising and is playing host to civilian and military Syrian opposition groups.

In Baghdad, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said the recent defection of a Syrian pilot to Jordan and the downing of the Turkish jet showed that the Syrian conflict could have far-reaching repercussions.

"Our main concern is the spillover of the crisis into neighborhood countries. No country is immune from this spillover," he said. "If this conflict were to turn into all-out sectarian or civil war, Iraq would be affected, Lebanon would be affected, Jordan would not be immune, Turkey could be (affected)."

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said he was "greatly worried" by the incident, urged a thorough investigation and welcomed Turkey's cool-headed reaction in the incident's immediate aftermath.

"Everything must be done to ensure that there won't be any further escalation in the already tense region,' he said in a statement.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davuoglu chaired a meeting Saturday with military officials during which they discussed possible steps and a search and rescue mission for the two missing pilots, the Foreign Ministry said. There was no announcement after the meeting.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc insisted the plane was not a fighter jet but a reconnaissance plane and said Turkey was awaiting an explanation from Syria.

The president said Turkey was still trying to establish the exact circumstances of the incident, but said it was "routine" for jets flying in high-speeds to unintentionally violate other countries' air spaces for short periods of time.

"These incidents are routine," Gul said. "They are incidents that are not ill-intentioned and happen because of the speeds (of the jets)."

"Was that the case, or did (the incident) occur in our own air space, these facts will emerge," he said. "No one should have any doubt that whatever (action) is necessary will be taken."

Gul did not elaborate. But Turkey said after an April border shooting incident ? in which two people inside a Turkish refugee camp died? that it would call on its NATO allies to intervene should it feel its security was being threatened.

Syrian coast guards joined Turkish coast guards in their search for the jet's two missing crew members for a second day Saturday, Arinc, the deputy prime minister said. Gul said earlier that some pieces of the wreckage had been found.

Late Friday, Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said the military had spotted an "unidentified aerial target" flying at low altitude and high speed.

"The Syrian anti-air defenses counteracted with anti-aircraft artillery, hitting it directly," SANA said. "The target turned out to be a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian airspace and was dealt with according to laws observed in such cases."

Syria claimed the jet violated its air space over territorial waters, penetrating about 1 kilometer (0.62 mile). It said Syrian forces only realized that it was a Turkish jet after firing.

On Saturday, the banner headline of Turkish newspaper Hurriyet accused Syria of "Playing with Fire," while Vatan newspaper said Syria would "pay the price" for the attack.

Arinc and other government ministers however, urged restraint.

"We must remain calm and collected," he said. "We must not give premium to any provocative speeches and acts."

The leader of Turkey's main opposition party, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, said the downing of the plane was unacceptable but also urged calm.

"All diplomatic channels must be kept open. We are expecting a coolheaded assessment of the incident," he added.
