Claudet's Relaxing Small Space Garden My Great Outdoors ...

Name: Claudet
Location: Florian?polis, Santa Catarina, Brazil

Florian?polis, an awesome city in the south of Brazil, has some lovely places and houses, but as other growing cities, the big trees and even the small plants are suppressed by the urban environment. In this home, I decided to create a comfortable, warm and silent small outdoor space, creating a special haven, a true oasis in Lagoa da Concei??o, at Santa Catarina Island.

This enchanted dome, where the mix of colors, fabrics, flowers, plants, teas, family antiques and recycled objects predominate, is perfect for a nice breakfast, lunch and especially afternoon tea in the shadow of the majestic Flamboyant tree, that also houses a family of fruit bats in autumn months, and an owl in the spring months. Also in the spring, hummingbirds nest in the Ficus trees of the corridor. In our garden we have an old Bougainvillea tree along with salvaged furniture and plenty of welcoming "stuff". Our house mascot Moppinho especially enjoys the old armchair. It's a tiny space, but we don't mind - we love the fresh air and the tranquility we feel while spending time here.

It's a place of reflection, used the whole year round, where we realize we do not need vast spaces to look within ourselves. We tend to relax the body, revitalize the mind, and invigorating the energy spent in the rush of everyday life. On the hammock, we can read a good book or simply do nothing and just relax! It is in this small garden, surrounded by green, that we do the real therapy of relaxation without leaving home. The simplicity, harmony and sense of well-being are the keynotes of this space.

Thanks, Claudet!

The problem is that not all business owners or managers actually have the time to manage the SEO campaign or afford an internet marketing company to manage and maintain the company?s internet marketing and PR campaigns.

Small businesses operating their own online stores?have?to use SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to drive traffic, convert visitors into customers and make money online.? The more content you have the more visible you will become as more people will be coming across your information and content while doing an internet search.? As simple as that.

?

  • Make use of Google Authorship to personalize your? content

When you make use of Google authorship you are giving your content an identity.? This means that, when you write an article, it will refer to your company name as the author of the article.? The more people see your author name, the better it will stick in their thoughts.

The more your brand name or services pop up, the more people will get to know you, and therewith you will become more well known among users.? As soon as you are more well known, they will feel that you are here to stay, making it more comfortable for them to purchase from you.

?

  • Make your content more locally targeted

Generally, unless you are capable of delivering service across the world, it will generate more possible clients than just visitors if you target your marketing to your local market.

By basing your marketing on your target area, it will be more likely to generate sales as someone looking for a service will find it more convenient to make use of local business and not have to drive hundreds of kilometres to purchase a product.

Torres looks to impress in Spain friendly

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:37 a.m. ET May 29, 2012

PAUL LOGOTHETIS

AP Sports Writer

MADRID (AP) -Fernando Torres is trying to put a season of struggles behind him to focus on Spain's campaign to defend its European Championship title.

The Chelsea striker will look to impress on Wednesday when Spain plays a friendly against South Korea in Switzerland.

Four years ago, Torres scored the winning goal at the Euro 2008 final. This year, he was not assured a spot in Spain's squad until a late season turnaround coupled with all-time leading scorer David Villa's absence to injury.

Torres, who has 88 caps for the World Cup champions, played sparingly for the Blues on their way to win the Champions League and FA Cup this season. Following talks with the Chelsea brass, Torres is optimistic about his future at the club and certain his form will pick up at the start of the European tournament in Poland and Ukraine next month.

"Physically I feel very good and fresh because I haven't had the drain of so many games as my teammates. I'm hopeful of showing my best to the team," Torres said from Spain's training camp in Austria. "It's true I would have liked to have played more with Chelsea to be in better playing shape."

Torres will compete with Fernando Llorente and Alvaro Negredo for the starting striker's spot in the warm up matches against South Korea on Wednesday and China on Sunday. A good performance in the two friendlies will secure him a place in Spain's opening match against Italy June 10.

"You can't stop the debates," Torres ahead of the match Wednesday - his first since November. "I think we are all here on our own merits. I played with the FA Cup and Champions League winners, so I don't think the end of the seasons was so bad."

Torres missed Spain's 2-0 win over Serbia on Sunday. Juan Mata was out too, but both Chelsea players are in Wednesday's lineup.

Missing from the match will be nine internationals from Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao. They will only join the team when they return to Spain after the South Korea match.

Spain eased past Serbia with its usual brand of possession and passing, which will serve them well to beat opponents in the two remaining warm-up matches for the Euro 2012.

Defender Sergio Ramos did not train on Monday during the team's final public practice in Austria which was marked by the pitch invasion by fans.

Spain travels will travel to its tournament base in the Polish city of Gdansk on June 5.

After Italy, they will face Ireland and Croatia in Group C.

Key gene found responsible for chronic inflammation, accelerated aging and cancer

Home Reports Life Sciences Content

25.05.2012

"This was certainly an unexpected finding," said principal investigator Robert J. Schneider, PhD, the Albert Sabin Professor of Molecular Pathogenesis, associate director for translational research and co-director of the Breast Cancer Program at NYU Langone Medical Center.

"It is rather uncommon for one gene to have two very different and very significant functions that tie together control of aging and inflammation. The two, if not regulated properly, can eventually lead to cancer development. It's an exciting scientific find."

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, appears online ahead of print today in Molecular Cell and is scheduled for the July 13 print issue.

For decades, the scientific community has known that inflammation, accelerated aging and cancer are somehow intertwined, but the connection between them has remained largely a mystery, Dr. Schneider said. What was known, due in part to past studies by Schneider and his team, was that a gene called AUF1 controls inflammation by turning off the inflammatory response to stop the onset of septic shock. But this finding, while significant, did not explain a connection to accelerated aging and cancer.

When the researchers deleted the AUF1 gene, accelerated aging occurred, so they continued to focus their research efforts on the gene. Now, more than a decade in the making, the mystery surrounding the connection between inflammation, advanced aging and cancer is finally being unraveled.

The current study reveals that AUF1, a family of four related genes, not only controls the inflammatory response, but also maintains the integrity of chromosomes by activating the enzyme telomerase to repair the ends of chromosomes, thereby simultaneously reducing inflammation, preventing rapid aging and the development of cancer, Dr. Schneider explained.

"AUF1 is a medical and scientific trinity," Dr. Schneider said. "Nature has designed a way to simultaneously turn off harmful inflammation and repair our chromosomes, thereby suppressing aging at the cellular level and in the whole animal."

With this new information, Dr. Schneider and colleagues are examining human populations for specific types of genetic alterations in the AUF1 gene that are associated with the co-development of certain immune diseases, increased rates of aging and higher cancer incidence in individuals to determine exactly how the alterations manifest and present themselves clinically.

North Korea reports serious drought

NAMPHO, North Korea (AP) ? North Korea is reporting a serious drought that could worsen already critical food shortages, but help is unlikely to come from the United States and South Korea following Pyongyang's widely criticized rocket launch.

North Korea has had little rain since April 27, with the country's western coastal areas particularly hard hit, according to a government weather agency in Pyongyang. The dry spell threatened to damage crops, officials said, as the country enters a critical planting season and as food supplies from the last harvest dwindle.

In at least one area of South Phyongan Province where journalists from The Associated Press were allowed to visit, the sun-baked fields appeared parched and cracked, and farmers complained of extreme drought conditions. Deeply tanned men, and women in sun bonnets, worked over cabbages and corn seedlings. Farmers cupped individual seedlings as they poured water from blue buckets onto the parched red soil.

"I've been working at the farm for more than 30 years, but I have never experienced this kind of severe drought," An Song Min, a farmer at the Tokhae Cooperative Farm in the Nampho area, told the AP.

It was not clear whether the conditions around Nampho were representative of a wider region. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said it had not yet visited the affected regions to confirm the extent and severity of the reported drought.

North Korea has suffered chronic food shortages for the past two decades because of economic and agricultural mismanagement as well as natural disasters. A famine in the 1990s killed an estimated hundreds of thousands of people.

The country's past appeals for food aid have been met with some skepticism, however, amid concerns that aid would be diverted to the military and Pyongyang elite without reaching the hungry.

The U.S. government suspended food handouts to North Korea in 2009 after Pyongyang expelled foreign food distribution monitors.

In February, the U.S. reversed course and agreed to provide 240,000 metric tons of food aid in exchange for a freeze in nuclear and missile activities.

However, the deal collapsed after North Korea launched a long-range rocket last month in what it called a failed attempt to send a satellite into space to study the weather.

The launch was widely criticized by the United States and others as a thinly disguised attempt to test missile technology in violation of both the U.S. food deal and U.N. bans on North Korean ballistic tests. The launch drew U.N. Security Council condemnation.

"The United States would like to get to a place where we could once again contemplate providing nutritional assistance to North Korea," Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy for North Korea, said last week. "Sadly, that is not the case right now, in the wake of their decision, in March, to announce" the rocket launch.

South Korea's conservative government has cut off large-scale direct food aid to North Korea since taking office in 2008, saying Pyongyang should first take steps toward nuclear disarmament.

North Korea's dry spell is expected to last until the end of the month, the country's State Hydrometeorological Administration said.

Bureaucrats and workers have been mobilized to irrigate farms, repair wells and keep water-pumping equipment operating, state media reported.

Seedlings are being moved from seed beds to the fields, where they need enough moisture to form strong roots, Percy Misika, the Food and Agriculture Organization's representative for China, North Korea and Mongolia, said Monday from Beijing.

"Any dry spell at this critical time means the seedlings are definitely going to wilt away, and there will be no harvest at the end of the day," he said.

Misika said FAO officials are trying to visit areas suffering from a lack of rain. "If it's going to last for one or two weeks more, it's going to be critical, but if it's a shorter period of time there could be hope," he said.

Droughts are common in spring, winter and autumn in North Korea, the FAO said in a special report late last year. Climate change has led to more extreme weather, making winters colder, summers packed with more intense rain and typhoons, and droughts more frequent and prolonged, it said.

South Korea's Korea Meteorological Administration said it could not confirm the dry spell without on-the-ground equipment, though satellite photos have shown no big rain clouds over North Korea since late April. North Korean dispatches sent to an international weather center also show the country has had little rain over the past month, spokesman Jang Hyun-sik said in Seoul.

Making clear that the IMF has no plans to relent on its austerity requirements for the country, Lagarde said she was aware that many Greeks were struggling to access services like healthcare because of the country's economic crisis, but believed people in other countries deserved more sympathy.

"I think more of the little kids from a school in a little village in Niger who get teaching two hours a day, sharing one chair for three of them, and who are very keen to get an education," she said in an interview with the U.K.'s Guardian newspaper published Saturday. "I have them in my mind all the time. Because I think they need even more help than the people in Athens."

Lagarde pointed to Greece's culture of tax evasion as a major factor behind the country's financial difficulties, saying: "So, you know what? As far as Athens is concerned, I also think about all those people who are trying to escape tax all the time."

Greeks "should also help themselves collectively" by paying their taxes, she said.

Greece's economy is being kept afloat on international loans provided by the European Union and the IMF, along with a harsh austerity package of cuts and higher taxes that is deeply unpopular with the country's electorate. The government that agreed to the loan and austerity package was voted out of office in May.

The new parties, who mainly campaigned on anti-austerity platforms ? have not been able to form a government and new elections are scheduled for June 17. One of the most popular parties in Greece, the left-wing Syriza party, wants to abolish Greece's international bailout agreements, raising fears that Greece will leave the Eurozone and destabilize world markets.

NEWSMAKER: Brotherhood man promises Islamic law in Egypt

CAIRO (Reuters) - When he joined the race for Egypt's presidency just five weeks ago, Mohamed Mursi was mocked as the Muslim Brotherhood's uncharismatic "spare tyre" after its first-choice candidate was disqualified.

But the 60-year-old engineer came first in the opening round, according to a Brotherhood tally after most votes were counted, thanks to a campaign that showed off the unequalled political muscle of Egypt's oldest Islamist movement.

The run-off on June 16 and 17 with second-placed Ahmed Shafiq, who served as deposed leader Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, gives Egyptians a stark choice between a military man linked to the past and an Islamist whose conservative message appeals to some and alarms others in this nation of 82 million.

A Brotherhood official said that with votes counted from about 12,800 of the roughly 13,100 polling stations, Mursi had 25 percent, Shafiq 23 percent, a rival Islamist Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh 20 percent and leftist Hamdeen Sabahy 19 percent.

Calling himself the only authentic Islamist in the race, Mursi has targeted devout voters whose support helped the Brotherhood and the ultra-orthodox Salafi Islamist movement to secure 70 percent of parliament seats earlier this year.

He has promised to implement Islamic sharia during rallies peppered with references to the Koran, God and the Prophet Mohammad and occasionally interrupted by pauses for mass prayer.

But he has seldom spelt out what that would mean for Egypt, where piety runs deep and the constitution already defines the principles of Islamic law as the main source of legislation.

Mursi has called for a review of Cairo's 1979 peace treaty with Israel, saying Egypt's neighbour has not respected the agreement, a line mirroring that of most of the other candidates in the race. The group has said it will not tear up the deal.

"We will take a serious step towards a better future, God willing," Mursi said at his final campaign rally on Sunday, promising to combat any corrupt hangers-on from Mubarak's era.

"If they take a step to take us backwards, to forge the will (of the people) and fiddle with security, we know who they are," he said. "We will throw them in the rubbish bin of history."

Mursi has cast himself as a reluctant latecomer to the election who is running for the sake of the nation and God.

EMPHASIS ON SHARIA

A stocky, bespectacled man with a grey-white beard, Mursi has traveled across Egypt promoting the Brotherhood's "renaissance project" - an 80-page manifesto based on what it terms its "centrist understanding" of Islam.

His success has dismayed non-Islamists, not least Christians who make up about a tenth of the population, unconvinced by promises that freedoms will be safe in a Brotherhood-led Egypt.

"It was for the sake of the Islamic sharia that men were ... thrown into prison. Their blood and existence rests on our shoulders now," Mursi said during one campaign rally.

"We will work together to realise their dream of implementing sharia," said the Brotherhood contender, who himself spent time in jail under Mubarak.

Mursi, who obtained his doctorate from the United States, is a long-serving, influential figure in the Brotherhood, a movement outlawed under Mubarak but which won close to half of the seats in parliamentary elections held after his overthrow.

Mursi ran only after the electoral commission barred Khairat al-Shater, the Brotherhood's preferred candidate, in April.

Like other Islamist contenders, Mursi has courted the ultra-orthodox Salafi Islamist movement, which has emerged in the past year to challenge the Brotherhood's dominance.

The Nour Party, a Salafi group that won more than a fifth of the seats in the parliamentary vote, endorsed Mursi's main Islamist rival, Abol Fotouh, who parted ways with the Brotherhood last year and cast himself as a moderate.

In a gesture to Gama'a al-Islamiya, another Salafi group, Mursi has pledged to work for the release of Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, a militant preacher imprisoned in the United States in the 1990s for plotting attacks in New York.

Abdel-Rahman is the spiritual leader of Gama'a al-Islamiya, which was involved in the 1981 assassination of President Anwar Sadat but renounced violence in 1997. The group has entered mainstream politics since Mubarak was toppled.

Another cleric, the independent Safwat el-Hegazi, added a radical flavour to Mursi's campaign, taking to the stage at his events to call for a Muslim super-state with Jerusalem as its capital and drawing enthusiastic chants from the crowds.

RURAL CHILDHOOD

Mursi's own speech-making style is stiff and formal. Critics say he lacks the charisma of some of his rivals. Other Brotherhood leaders, Shater among them, have appeared alongside Mursi at campaign events, reinforcing the impression this is a presidential bid by a movement, not an individual.

The son of a peasant, Mursi has spoken of a simple childhood in a village in the Nile Delta province of Sharqia, recalling how his mother taught him prayer and the Koran.

He studied engineering at Cairo University and in 1978 went to California to complete his studies. He returned to Egypt in 1985. Two of his five children hold U.S. citizenship.

Helmi el-Gazzar, a Brotherhood MP who has known Mursi for years, describes him as a scientific character with an analytical mind. "He was an indefatigable man, tangibly eager to perform the tasks for which he was responsible," Gazzar told Reuters, recalling his days working with Mursi in Cairo.

Mursi's critics portray him as a Brotherhood apparatchik and part of a conservative clique within the group who has long been dismissive of other political forces in Egypt.

"He feels they do not have roots in the Egyptian street," said Mohamed Habib, a former deputy Brotherhood leader, who left the group last year in protest at its post-Mubarak policies.

Head of the Freedom and Justice Party that the Brotherhood established last year, Mursi comes across as deeply committed to the 84-year-old movement. His daughter is married to the son of another Brotherhood leader and he has described his wife, who wears a long, cape-like headscarf, as a Brotherhood activist.

GOD AND NATION

Like other members, Mursi has sworn allegiance to the Brotherhood, raising questions over whether that would outweigh his loyalty to Egypt. Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie has said Mursi would be relieved of the oath if elected president.

Mursi has described his challenge for the presidency in terms of duty. "I am walking this path to satisfy God and out of concern for our nation and people," he said.

Despite his campaign trail emphasis on Islamic law, when it comes to television interviews, he has typically tried to ease concerns about what Islamist rule would mean.

For example, he has said Egypt will not become a theocracy, adding that there is little difference between the phrase "the principles of the sharia" - the term found in the current Egyptian constitution - and the sharia itself.

Pushed by one TV interviewer to clarify what Islamist rule might mean for bikini-wearing on Egypt's beaches - one element of a vital tourist industry - Mursi did not give a clear answer.

He described such issues as "very marginal, very superficial and affecting a very limited number of places", adding that sector specialists must be consulted on all draft laws.

The Brotherhood's "renaissance" programme sketches out the group's vision on everything from fighting inflation to forging ties with the United States on a more equal footing. It envisions deeper ties with Turkey - a Muslim state that Brotherhood leaders often cite as a model of success.

Mursi has cited fear of judgment day as one reason for seeking the Egypt's top office. "We are worried that God will ask us, on the day of reckoning: 'What did you do when you saw that the nation was in need of sacrifice and effort?'" he said.

PROFUSION Rewotower music review by Andy Webb

3 stars I've noticed there tends to be two kinds of Eclectic prog bands. In one category bands incorporate a vast multitude of influences into one distinct sound, such as groups like Van der Graaf Generator or Gentile Giant. The other kind of group are those who take a huge variety of influences and then incorporate them individually in different parts of their music, such as King Crimson, Beardfish, and this young Italian act Profusion. While in reality Profusion has been around for 10 years, their second album "Rewotower" is only their second, which comes after their six-year studio silence from 2006's "One Piece Puzzle." And indeed "Rewotower" contains that multifarious mix of musical influences, ranging from a very Gentle Giant-esque quirk prog sentiment to a near-Dream Theaterian progressive metal quality.

Across the 12 tracks of the album, like I've said, Profusion truly displays the breadth of their musical prowess. There's no secret that the quintet is incredibly skilled at each of their instruments, and none of them are afraid to show it across the album. Each track is a treat of proggy delicacies of guitar and keyboard solo trading, multi-part vocal harmonies, complex times and polyrhythmic drum parts and so much more. Obviously the guys have done their music theory homework, and they quite effortlessly can put all the skill that they have not only on their instruments but also in their pens into effect.

However, I felt like there was a certain aspect of the album that was missing. I considered branding the title of the album "Retrotower," poking fun at its obvious retro-prog (oxymoronic, I know) influences, but I realized that that's not really what it was. These guys have a huge modern prog influence, which also seemed to make them have that vicarious retro feel while at the same time keeping the clean, modern and accessible sound to them. In a way, there was so much Moon Safari and Neal Morse and all that great stuff in there that the music almost started to feel retro in weird, twisted way.

While the music is obviously ripe with the modern stuff, the one thing that really got to me through the entire album, and truly it was the only thing that got to me, was how dry the music seemed to get after 50-something minutes of energetic and complex prog music. While the compositions are fantastic and the musicianship is just supreme, after so many style shifts and influence "shout outs," it all seems to blend into a single blur of prog music.

Overall however, I really only have good things to say about the album. While the guys could work on a bit of a more signature sound, the album is incredibly well produced, put together, composed, played, and just about everything that can be done "well" on an album. The huge variety of styles put into the album added a nice dynamic, and the guys successfully pulled every style off, which, in many cases with other bands who try the same thing, doesn't go very well. In the end "Rewotower" was an enjoyable experience, and Profusion are a group I'd certainly like to visit again. 3+ stars.

Xperia Play notably missing on Sony?s ICS upgrade list

Sony Xperia S owners weren?t all too pleased when they found out that the ICS upgrade for the flagship phone has been slightly delayed, but at least they will still be getting the Ice Cream Sandwich treat on their plate errm? phone. The same thing can?t be said about Sony Xperia Play at the moment; it has disappeared?inexplicably from the company?s list of eligible phones expected to receive Android 4.0.

Sony had promised that all Xperia devices released in 2011 will be getting ICS this year, therefore it?s quite odd to see the Xperia Play being singled out and removed from the list. The new list only covers the following phones now:?

  • Xperia Arc
  • Xperia Arc S
  • Xperia Neo and Neo V
  • Xperia Mini and Mini Pro
  • Xperia Pro
  • Xperia Active
  • Xperia Ray
  • Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman

Is this a typo or has Sony changed its mind about upgrading the Xperia Play to ICS? Sony has released an ICS beta ROM for the Xperia Play, ?so for now we?re leaning toward the former as the reason for the disappearance. Unfortunately, the usually informative support staff at Sony?s website?hasn?t?gotten back to us yet with a definitive answer; something that has never before been an issue for the dedicated team. Here?s hoping that the curious case of disappearing Xperia Play can be solved soon.

We?ll update this piece once we get more information. Our fingers are crossed that Sony Xperia Play won?t be left out from the ICS upgrade.

We're Always Fighting | Relationship Rewind

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

If things aren?t working in your relationship and you?re always fighting with one another, life can be stressful. These four tips will help you lose the screaming and get rid of the silent treatment.

#1. Learn to control your temper

Your relationship can be stronger and more successful if you are able to control your temper. Learn more positive ways of reacting and responding to stress and disagreements ?with your girl.

#2. Talk about what?s wrong

Instead of withdrawing or lashing out, stay calm. Sit down and talk about what?s bothering you. Make sure that each person has the time to be there. Be honest. Expect honesty from her.

#3. Try to see her side

If you start the talk and you?re only looking for her to apologize, then you?ve missed the point. Listen to what she?s saying. Apologize if you need to. Explain where you?re coming from, but try to figure out where she?s coming from as well.

#4. Seek counseling if necessary

If marriage or relationship counseling is necessary, then do it. You?ll know if you need it by paying attention to how often you have arguments and how successful your attempts to resolve it are. When both of you cannot sit down together and talk through things, then you?ll know that it?s gone too far. You can learn how to resolve things on your own and there isn?t any shame in asking for help by reaching out to a relationship counseling professional. However, if you are able to resolve things on your own, that?s okay too. Just be honest when you look at your communication strategies and the way the two of you resolve things.

With these tips put into play, you?ll find that you have less arguments and that when you do they can be easily resolved. Conflict resolution and communication are two of the most important skills in all relationships, not just romantic relationships.

Eager Egyptians hold landmark presidential vote

CAIRO (AP) ? After a lifetime of being told who will rule them, Egyptians dove enthusiastically into the uncertainty of the Arab world's first competitive presidential race Wednesday, wrestling with a polarizing choice between secularists rooted in Hosni Mubarak's old autocracy and Islamists hoping to infuse the state with religion.

Waiting in long lines, voters were palpably excited at the chance to decide their country's path in the vote, the fruit of last year's stunning popular revolt that overthew Mubarak after 29 years in power. For the past 60 years, Egypt's presidents ran unchallenged in yes-or-no referendums that few bothered to vote in.

Still, the choices raised worries among many about whether real democracy will emerge. The final result, likely to come after a runoff next month, will only open a new chapter of political struggle.

Mohammed Salah, 26, emerged grinning from a poll station, fresh from casting his ballot. "Before, they used to take care of that for me," he said. "Today, I am choosing for myself."

Medhat Ibrahim, 58, who suffers from cancer, had tears in his eyes. "I might die in a matter of months, so I came for my children, so they can live," he said, as he waited to vote in a poor Cairo district. "We want to live better, like human beings." He later came out flashing a finger stained with the blue ink used to prevent multiple voting. "Mubarak's policies gave me cancer," he said, referring to the decline in health care under the last regime. "Now I got my revenge."

Adding to the drama, this election is up in the air. The reliability of polls is uncertain, and four of the 13 candidates have bounced around the top spots, leaving no clear front-runner. None is likely to win outright in Wednesday and Thursday's balloting, so the top two vote-getters enter a run-off June 16-17, with the victor announced June 21.

The two secular front-runners are both veterans of Mubarak's regime ? former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq and former foreign minister Amr Moussa.

The main Islamist contenders are Mohammed Morsi of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood and Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, a moderate Islamist whose inclusive platform has won him the support of some liberals, leftists and minority Christians.

The debate went right up to the doorsteps of schools around the country where poll stations were set up.

Some voters backed Mubarak-era veterans, believing they can bring stability after months of rising crime, a crumbling economy and bloody riots. Others were horrified by the thought, believing the "feloul" ? or "remnants" of the regime ? will keep Egypt locked in dictatorship and thwart democracy.

Islamists, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood, saw their chance to lead a country where they were repressed for decades and to implement their version of Islamic law. Their critics recoiled, fearing theocracy.

Some saw an alternative to both in a leftist candidate, Hamdeen Sabahi, who has claimed the mantle of Egypt's first president, the populist Gamal Abdel-Nasser.

An Islamist victory, particularly by Morsi, will likely mean a greater emphasis on religion in government. His Muslim Brotherhood, which already dominates parliament, says it won't mimic Saudi Arabia and force women to wear veils or implement harsh punishments like amputations. But it says it does want to implement a more moderate version of Islamic law, which liberals fear will mean limitations on many rights.

Many of the candidates have called for amendments to Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel, which remains deeply unpopular. None is likely to dump it, but a victory by any of the Islamist or leftist candidates in the race could mean strained ties with Israel and a stronger stance in support of the Palestinians in the peace process.

The candidates from the Mubarak regime ? and, ironically, the Brotherhood, which has already held multiple talks with U.S. officials ? are most likely to maintain the alliance with the United States.

A looming question is whether either side will accept victory by the other. Islamists have warned of new protests if Shafiq wins, which they say can only happen by fraud. Many are convinced the ruling military wants a victory by Shafiq, a former air force commander.

"Over my dead body will Shafiq or Moussa win. Why not just bring back Mubarak?" said Saleh Zeinhom, a merchant backing Abolfotoh. "I'm certain we'll have a bloodbath after the elections because the military council won't hand power to anyone but Shafiq."

Shafiq was met by several dozen protesters screaming "down with the feloul" as he arrived to vote in an upscale neighborhood east of Cairo. Some protesters showed their contempt by holding up their shoes in his direction. On his way out, some mobbed him, swinging their shoes at him as his security hustled him into his car.

Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister until he too was forced out of his post by protests, has been openly disparaging of the pro-democracy youth groups who led the anti-Mubarak uprising. Critics view him as too close to the generals who took over from Mubarak and whose own reputation is tainted by human rights abuses and authoritarian tendencies.

But with his strongman image, he has appealed to Egyptians who crave stability and fear Islamists.

"The country is going under. We need a president that implements justice and brings back security. Bottom line," said Essam el-Khatib, a government employee voting in the Cairo suburb of Maadi.

Nearby another man, Sayed Attiya, shouted, "What Shafiq? We didn't have a revolution to bring back Shafiq!"

The Muslim Brotherhood, meanwhile, faced a backlash of its own.

The group was the biggest winner in parliament elections late last year, winning nearly half the seats. But it disillusioned some by seeming too power hungry, demanding to be allowed to form a government and trying to dominate a panel created to draft a new constitution. The panel was scrapped and the process of writing the vital new charter is on hold as politicians struggle over forming a new one.

The image it has cultivated as an advocate of tolerance and piety was damaged by its campaign to discredit Abolfotoh, who quit the Brotherhood to run for president, and its edict that it is a sin to vote for anyone not advocating implementation of Islamic Shariah law.

At a polling station in the village of Ikhsas, outside Cairo, a group of neighbors got into a friendly but frank debate.

"I voted Brotherhood for parliament but I find they are inflexible in their opinions and want to take everything. I can't now find them in the country's top job," Bassem Saber, a 31-year-old accountant dressed in the traditional local robes, told the circle of men. He now backs Abolfotoh.

Khaled el-Zeini, a Brotherhood backer, said people were being unfair.

Fares Kamel, a local trader, interjected with a shout against the Brothers, "We loved them and wanted them but we realized they are all about monopolizing power."

But the group has a powerful electoral machine.

In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, Brotherhood vans ferried women supporters to the polls in the poor neighborhood of Abu Suleiman, one of the group's strongholds. The women, in headscarves or covered head to toe in black robes and veils that hid their faces, filed into the station.

"I want to give the Brotherhood a chance to rule," said Aida Ibrahim, a veteran Brotherhood member who was helping voters find their station. "If it doesn't work, they will be held accountable," she said.

Some Brotherhood supporters cited the group's years of providing charity to the poor ? including reduced-price meat, and free medical care.

"Whoever fills the tummy gets the vote," said Naima Badawi, a housewife sitting on her doorstep watching voters in Abu Sir, one of the many farming villages near the Pyramids being sucked into Cairo's urban sprawl.

There were only a few reports of overt violations of election rules Wednesday, mainly concerning candidates' backers campaigning near polling stations. Three international monitoring organizations, including the U.S.'s Carter Center, were observing the vote. Former President Jimmy Carter, the center's head, visited a polling station in the ancient Cairo district of Sayeda Aisha.

The election's winner will face a monumental task. The economy has been sliding as the key tourism industry dried up ? though it is starting to inch back up. Crime has increased. Labor strikes have proliferated.

And the political turmoil is far from over. The generals who took over from Mubarak have promised to hand authority to the election winner by the end of June. But many fear it will try to maintain a considerable amount of political say. The fundamentals of Mubarak's police state remain in place, including the powerful security forces.

"We will have an elected president, but the military is still here and the old regime is not dismantled," said Ahmed Maher, a prominent activist from the group April 6, a key architect of last year's 18-day uprising against Mubarak.

"The pressure will continue," he said. "People have finally woken up. Whoever the next president is, we won't leave him alone."
