BEIJING ? China has sentenced four Uighur (WEE'-gur) men to death for their roles in three separate alleged terror attacks in the far western Xinjiang region in July.
The state-run China Daily newspaper says the men were sentenced Tuesday by courts in Hotan and Kashgar, the cities where the attacks occurred. Thursday's report says two other Uighurs were given 19-year jail terms.
The July 18 Hotan incident involved a group of Uighurs who stormed a police station and took hostages, killing four. In Kashgar, 13 people were killed July 30 and 31 when Uighurs attacked civilians with knives and set off explosions.
China says the incidents were organized terror attacks. An overseas Uighur rights group says they were anti-government riots carried out by angry citizens.
