NAMI Hernando
to hold dinner-dance
NAMI Hernando will hold its dinner-dance fundraiser, "Starry Starry Night," Saturday at Palace Grand, 275 Della Court, off U.S. 19. A cash bar will open the event at 6 p.m., followed by a catered dinner at 6:30 p.m. and an evening of dancing and a silent auction. Ticket cost is $50 per person, and all proceeds will benefit NAMI Hernando, an affiliate of National Alliance on Mental Illness. If you are unable to attend but would like to offer assistance, donations or items for the auction are welcome. NAMI also is seeking sponsors. There are four sponsorship levels: gold $1,000 (includes four tickets), silver $500 (includes two tickets), bronze $250 (includes two tickets), and Friend of NAMI $100. Names of individuals or businesses donating to the event will be featured in NAMI's October newsletter. NAMI Hernando has been involved in the community for over 24 years and has been instrumental in establishing affordable housing for the mentally ill and a mental health court in Hernando County. Jazzercise event
to benefit St. Jude's
Jazzercise benefit class will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Jazzercise Spring Hill, 1287 Kass Circle. Each participant will collect pledges prior to the event or pay a donation at the door, which will be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Highlights of the fundraiser will include door prizes and refreshments, as well as a marathon Jazzercise class taught by Hernando County and surrounding area Jazzercise instructors. Babysitting class
at Delta Woods
American Heart Association babysitting course will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 24 at Delta Woods Park, 3400 Deltona Blvd. The course is for ages 11-18 and will include the full babysitting course, two-year CPR certification with American Heart Association, general first aid basics, how to run a babysitting business, how to obtain customers and more. The cost is $50 per person, which will include the book and three certifications valid for two years. The instructor will be Julie Stack of CPR RESQ Training Services. at Brooksville Regional
Four separate CPR/AED classes will be offered at 6 p.m. Oct. 6, Oct. 20, Nov. 3 and Nov. 17 in Room 120 of the new Brooksville Regional Hospital Medical Arts Complex, 17240 Cortez Blvd. The course meets the guidelines of the American Heart Association and the American Safety and Health Institute. The class is designed for the professional health care provider, but anyone is welcome to attend. At the successful completion of the class, the student will receive a two-year certification card. The cost is $20 per person for the complete course to include CPR and Automated External Defribulation. Since seating is limited and classes fill up quickly, early reservations are advisable. There are a limited number of vendor booths are still available for the seventh annual Community Health Fair to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at Brooksville Elks Lodge 2582, 14494 Cortez Blvd. The fair typically draws a large crowd. Complimentary samples of signature items from local food establishments will be available, as well as live music and entertainment. Flu shots will also be available. Presenting sponsors include Oak Hill Hospital, Brooksville Regional Hospital, Spring Hill Regional Hospital, Nature Coast Community Health Center and Brooksville Elks Lodge 2582. Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope is seeking vendors for its employees' yard sale to be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 8 in the parking lot of the Cancer Institute at 7154 Medical Center Drive. Vendors/renters are responsible for own tables, chairs, tent covers, etc. The cost for a 9-by-18 space is $10, and discounts are available for three or more spaces. Proceeds from the event will benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Reservations for spaces are required by Sept. 23; since limited spots are available, early space rental is suggested. Oak Hill Hospital will continue its For Your Health community education series from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at Heritage Pines Country Club, 11524 Scenic Hills Blvd., off County Line Road. Dr. Mahmoud A. Nimer will present "Advances in Cardiovascular Care and Prevention." Dr. Nimer holds three board certifications ? in cardiovascular disease, cardiology, and internal medicine. He will cover all aspects of what is new in cardiovascular care and will present the latest in areas such as prevention, diagnosis, medications, imaging, procedures and more. Pasco County Falls Prevention Coalition members and Community Hospital, Oak Hill Hospital and Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point have teamed up to host the 2011 Falls Prevention Awareness Health Fair during SASSY (Seniors Are Someone Special Year-Round) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Gulf View Square Mall, 9409 U.S. Highway 19. Free health screenings will include bone density heel scans to detect osteoporosis, hearing screenings, and blood pressure readings. Featured booths will include Area Agency on Aging, HCA Hernando/Pasco hospitals, Mobility Solutions, Alert 1, CARES, Wii Balance Awareness, Brain Injury Association of Florida, Alzheimer's Family Organization, Pasco County Health Department and more. will meet Oct. 3
Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope will hold its "Man to Man" prostate cancer support group from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at its Brooksville Center, 7154 Medical Center Drive, off Kadri Boulevard, across from the High Point community. Topics frequently discussed are: importance of early detection, signs and symptoms, prognosis, disease stages, incontinence, impotence, various treatment options and the latest research and treatment modalities. Speakers will include physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers and others.
