Britain's Luke Campbell won the men's Olympic bantamweight (56kg) gold on Saturday with a 14-11 win over Ireland's John Joe Nevin to claim Britain's second boxing title of the London Games.
Having lost in the semi-finals, Cuba's Lazaro Alvarez and Japan's Satoshi Shimizu won bronze medals.
After Nicola Adams won the women's flyweight final on Thursday, this was Great Britain's second boxing gold of the Games.
"It's a dream come true," said the 24-year-old Campbell from Hull, England.
"My plan was simple: stay calm, stick to my boxing, keep things straight down the middle, no wild swings, and bring it home.
"I wasn't looking for a stoppage.
"He's a class fighter, he's very clever and he's strong, so I knew it'd be a very technical fight.
"I can't believe it. I've won.
"It's a day I've dreamed of for a long, long time. To be here and achieve that gold, I'm lost for words."
Campbell said the huge support from the 10,000-strong London crowd had given him an advantage.
"The crowd were very inspirational, 10,000 people shouting 'Campbell.' You can't describe the feeling," he said.
"It's once-in-a-lifetime to be part of the Olympics and represent Great Britain."
The last time the pair fought, Campbell came away with a count-back win from their 2011 world championships semi-final in Baku, Azerbaijan, after it finished 12-all and this was another tense affair.
"I would have given my right arm for a bronze medal before the Games so this is a dream come true for me," said Nevin after claiming silver.
"My mother has decided where the medal is going to go and it's going to go in her cupboard.
"Wherever I go from here I think I will have a good career, either pro or amateur.
"And whether pro or amateur I will always be competing for my country.
"You haven't seen the last of John Joe Nevin.
"I would love to box pro, but it's all about my future and what I will do after boxing as well."
"I'm going to take two weeks off now and go on the beer and go mad."
Campbell made a positive start, landing some solid shots, to take a 5-3 lead in the first, but Nevin improved to take the second round 5-4, to give Campbell just a single point lead going into the third.
The world silver medallist knocked Nevin to the canvas midway with a right hook and although the Irishman was quickly back on his feet and worked hard until the final bell, Campbell took the round 5-3 to win gold.
