Nelson: Bout With Cormier Was a “Sparring Match”, Wants Rematch

Although most observers would agree that Daniel Cormier cruised to a unanimous decision win over Roy Nelson at UFC 166, “Big Country” has made it clear he wants another shot at the decorated wrestler. Of course, since Cormier is headed to light-heavyweight, however, it’s a rematch that won’t happen any time soon.

Naturally, most fighters want to avenge any loss on their record, but while speaking to Fight Hub TV recently, Nelson outlined why he’s keen to throw down with “DC” again (comments transcribed via Mixed Martial Arts.com):

“I didn’t feel like it was a fight, just a good sparring match,” said Nelson. “I was back in the gym on Monday.”

“I just got out pointed. It’s nothing against Daniel. You know, Daniel – excellent game plan, played it to a tee. I just wish I had two more rounds. That’s about it. Daniel won that night, and he was the better guy. I’d definitely like to do a rematch. I’d fight anybody that I ever lost to.”

Cormier used his footwork and wrestling to keep Nelson on the defensive, which is always a smart thing to do when you’re fighting someone with ridiculous KO power. Immediately after the October 19th bout, Nelson said the AKA fighter “didn’t engage me really”, which if you recall, didn’t sit too well with Dana White. Upon hearing the comment, the UFC boss man blasted Nelson (again) by stating “He outwrestled him, and he punched the living s–t out of him. How much more does he want to be engaged? He says some dumb s–t, and he’s very delusional.”

So, it remains to be seen who Nelson will fight next. The 37 year-old had worked his way to the top of the UFC heavyweight ranks, due to consecutive stoppage wins over Cheick Kongo, Matt Mitrione and Dave Herman, but now Nelson’s dropped two in a row. Prior to facing Cormier, Nelson was also outscored by Stipe Miocic at UFC 161 and lost by UD.
