Samsung gets official with the Galaxy Premier: 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED, 8MP camera, GS III styling

Samsung gets official with the Galaxy Premier 465inch HD Super AMOLED, 8MP camera, GS III styling

If Samsung took a wrong turn with its brand-diluting Galaxy S III Mini, then the much-leaked Galaxy Premier is where it gets back on track. The phone keeps the outward visage of the Galaxy S III and makes only modest sacrifices in order to reach a wider audience. These include a slightly shrunken 4.65-inch screen, which still blazes away with a full 720 x 1,280 Super AMOLED panel, an acceptable dual-core 1.5 GHz TI OMAP 4470 processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The cameras haven't been messed with -- we're still looking at an 8-megapixel rear and a 1.9-megapixel front-facer -- while connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. So far, the phone has only been made official in the Ukraine, where it's been pegged for a November release and priced at 5,555 Ukrainian hryvnias -- an exotic-sounding figure that very roughly translates to $680.

An Introduction to Media Queries

An Introduction to Media Queries

Recently I wrote about the fundamentals of responsive web design, and how important it was to acknowledge that it wasn?t going away.

When CSS3 became available, it introduced a concept called media queries ? which allows presentations to be tailored to a specific range of devices without changing the content itself.

In layman?s terms, this gives us a chance to represent our website in different ways depending on the device that is used for viewing. Whether it be an iPad, iPhone or any other tablet or smart phone, you have the capability of serving up a better viewing experience to your visitors.

Implementing Media Queries

Before I get into the types of media queries that are available, you?ll need a method for detecting the device that is being used for viewing. Thankfully, Apple is smart and came up with the Viewport meta tag which we can use.

If you are using the Genesis Framework to power your website, there?s an easy way to implement this so that it loads properly in the head section of your source code.

Simple place the following code into your child theme?s functions.php file:

/** Add Viewport meta tag for mobile browsers */ add_action( 'genesis_meta', 'add_viewport_meta_tag' ); function add_viewport_meta_tag() {     echo '<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"/>'; }

In Genesis 1.9 we will be adding a brand new Genesis Responsive function which will use add_theme_support to replace the method above as well as introduce a number of other extremely cool mobile-friendly features.

Now that you have the Viewport meta tag added to your head, now we can move forward with understanding the various types of media queries and how they can be used.

Types of Media Queries

I have a tremendous amount of respect for designer Chris Coyier, so I am going to be unoriginal and rely on his knowledge to present the various types of media queries. Props also goes out to Andy Clark for his hard work which served as the source for the snippets that Chris used.

Thanks to them, we have a an elegant roadmap to using media queries for standard devices. Below are the snippets of CSS that should be added to your theme?s style sheet.

Currently we place them at the bottom of the child theme?s style.css file, but the upcoming Genesis Responsive function will load a responsive.css file if it exists in the theme folder.

Smartphones (portrait and landscape)

/* Smartphones (portrait and landscape) ----------- */ @media only screen and (min-device-width: 320px) and (max-device-width: 480px) {     /* Styles */ }

Smartphones (landscape)

/* Smartphones (landscape) ----------- */ @media only screen  and (min-width: 321px) {     /* Styles */ }

Smartphones (portrait)

/* Smartphones (portrait) ----------- */ @media only screen  and (max-width: 320px) {     /* Styles */ }

iPads (portrait and landscape)

/* iPads (portrait and landscape) ----------- */ @media only screen  and (min-device-width: 768px)  and (max-device-width: 1024px) {     /* Styles */ }

iPads (landscape)

/* iPads (landscape) ----------- */ @media only screen  and (min-device-width: 768px)  and (max-device-width: 1024px)  and (orientation: landscape) {     /* Styles */ }

iPads (portrait)

/* iPads (portrait) ----------- */ @media only screen  and (min-device-width: 768px)  and (max-device-width: 1024px)  and (orientation: portrait) {     /* Styles */ }

Desktops and laptops

/* Desktops and laptops ----------- */ @media only screen  and (min-width: 1224px) {     /* Styles */ }

Large screens

/* Large screens ----------- */ @media only screen  and (min-width: 1824px) {     /* Styles */ }

iPhone 4

/* iPhone 4 ----------- */ @media only screen and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio : 1.5), only screen and (min-device-pixel-ratio : 1.5) {     /* Styles */ }

The snippets above are merely examples of using media queries for standard mobile devices. You can target general screen viewing areas by changing max-device-width to max-width.

Here?s a list of resources that I found useful while doing research on media queries:

Free tacos at Taco Bell today, weather permitting

Taco Bell

For any locations closed because of Superstorm Sandy, Taco Bell announced that they'll set up a later date for customers to get their free taco.

By Ben Popken, TODAY contributor

Beat the post-hurricane blues with a free taco today, Tuesday, October 30th, at Taco Bell from 2-6pm. The chain is giving away one free Doritos Locos Taco to every customer as part of its "Steal a Base, Steal a Taco promotion."

Taco Bell promised that if a base was stolen during the World Series, it would give away a free taco. Sunday night, in the eighth inning of Game 2, the San Francisco Giants's Angel Patan stole second base.?In so doing, he "effectively stole free Doritos Locos Tacos for the entire country," Taco Bell said in a press release.

For any locations closed because of Hurricane Sandy, Taco Bell announced via their Facebook page that they'll?set up a later date for customers to get their free taco.

It's a good idea to call ahead first to find out if the store is a) open and b) taking part in the giveaway. NBC News?called several locations in New York and New Jersey and got no answer on Tuesday morning.?Locations in Indianapolis, Indiana, however, west of Sandy's major impact, were open and participating.

Use common sense based on information from public safety officials and authorities in your area. Flooded roads and downed power lines aren't worth risking for a free taco, no matter how deliciously addictive you find its crispy Dorito shell.

NBC News was not able to reach Taco Bell corporate for comment.

Italian Bond Auction October 30 - Business Insider

There's been some nervousness about Italy lately, since Silvio Berlusconi (smarting from his 4-year prison sentence) threatened to get back into politics and topple the existing Monti government.

But markets are pretty blase about it.

Italy just had a strong auction. Bloomberg's Linda Yuen tweets the stats: " Italy sold 10 year benchmark bonds at 4.92%, lowest since May 2011, vs 5.24% on Sept 27, also new sold 5 year bond at 3.8% vs 4.09% in Sept "

Here's a chart of 10-year yields going back a year. From Bloomberg:

Past the Tipping Point ? 27oct12 - Rebane&#39;s Ruminations

George Rebane

Readers know that I believe our country is already past the tipping point and headed for a bad transition.? For me the tipping point represents that unfortunate state of affairs in our nation from which recovery by 'normal' or historically successful corrective measures will not be enough to save us from a disastrous transition.? If we are to be saved, we now must prepare for more dramatic efforts and draconian events to restore the republic.? But not to lose heart, dear reader, we have been through such dire straits in the past, the last one was called the War Between the States, The War for Southern Independence, or erroneously The Civil War.

Let me be clear and state that there are also other ways that nations have navigated such waters, Germany?s Weimar Republic comes to mind.? And we all know its aftermath.

Evidence of our being past the tipping point is what I want to memorialize in these offerings.? I am reminded that all posts on the internet will survive ?forever?, so that these offerings could inform or amuse a future cyber-anthropologist digging back into the history of the early 21st century.

EducSpendingPerformance

Two major national institutions are now beyond normal repair ? K-12 public education and our justice system.? Since the feds? Great Society (1964-68) started the destruction, we have revamped public education by spending trillions and getting nothing out of it save a workforce ever more out of touch with the realworld labor markets.? (See figure and the Friedman Foundation report and more details here.)?? Instead we have built up an extremely ignorant and state-dependent teacher class, led by their corrupt unions, that in the aggregate is barely smarter than the students they claim to matriculate.? Socialism is openly taught in government schools as the correct way to organize society.? Nevertheless, education remains the Republic's ONLY hope.

The legal industry has turned our justice system into their private sinecure.? Again in the aggregate, America?s justice system from the law enforcement agencies, through ?justice departments?, to the courts are corrupt beyond comprehension by the average citizen.? Two decades ago we saw an obviously guilty OJ Simpson exonerated of criminal charges, and then convicted of the same crime in a turn-around civil suit that essentially deprived him of his property but left him free.? Double jeopardy has become institutionalized under the ruse of ?different sovereignties? and back-to-back criminal and civil liabilities ? it is nothing more than a full employment provision for trial lawyers.

A more recent case underlines this.? A 90 year-old man was attacked in his home by an armed meth head with a criminal record who broke into his house.? The senior citizen grabbed his gun and fought off his assailant in an ensuing indoor gunfight that did not end entirely successfully.? The homeowner was shot in the jaw, and was only able to wound his assailant who then took the old man?s gun, pressed it to his head, and pulled the trigger.? Fortunately the gun was empty and the wounded low-life fled.? He was picked up by police a short distance away profusely bleeding in his stopped car.

After long stays in the hospital for both criminal and victim, the criminal was tried and faces a long prison sentence.? And here?s the rub, the criminal?s father and attorney have filed suit against the elderly homeowner for causing the criminal bodily harm, emotional distress, problems with his marriage, and financial loss.? The corruption inherent in our justice system is that the court, instead of throwing out the suit amid peals of communal laughter, has accepted the case for trial.

Reports from many quarters describe a fearful government that is readying its multiple departments through massive purchases of arms and ammunition, surveillance drones, urban fighting vehicles, and new 18-24 year-olds being trained by FEMA as 'disaster relief corps' who march with military precision.? Preparations are afoot for things we are not told.

This kind of rot drizzles down from the top and did not start with President Obama.? However, he has pushed Executive Branch lawlessness and lying to new heights.? (Nixon?s Watergate was a piker's pursuit compared to what we already know about Benghazi.)? For example, brazenly advising corporations to ignore the Warn Act, end-running Congress on using regulatory agencies to instigate policies that will change the economic landscape of the country with no elected representative having a say, and using Executive Privilege to cover up communications (?Fast and Furious?) between agencies and departments that involved no communications with the President or the White House, and the list goes on.

(BTW, I believe the Benghazi tragedy, as originally mishandled and then covered up, appears to involve one or more impeachable offenses, and that a Republican House will so indict Obama.)

Finally, our Fourth Estate ? the see, hear, speak no leftwing evil media ? is no longer the watchdog of the Republic, but is solidly in the tank for anything and everything that promotes socialism and globalization.? They report no inconvenient news, pursue no obvious leads of government malfeasance, have become unabashedly virulent against capitalism, and will go to any length to appropriately propagandize the news.? Journalists are vying with lawyers for the muck at the bottom.? Woodward is now a lonely old relic, still doggedly pursuing his trade.

The corruption of our politicians is unchanged and continues apace along its historical and well-documented lows.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- An animal advocate has been named to the Nevada Wildlife Commission -- a board that critics say is unfairly stacked with hunters.

Karen Summers Layne is president of the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society. She was appointed to the nine-member policy board on Oct.3 by Gov. Brian Sandoval. Her appointment follows that of former Clark County Sheriff Bill Young in July.

Layne opposed establishing a black bear hunting season in Nevada two years ago and has worked on trapping regulations for the Mount Charleston region outside Las Vegas.

She holds a doctorate degree in public administration, and is retired from both UNLV and the Las Vegas Police Department, where she worked as planning director.

She becomes only the sixth woman to serve on the commission.

Board Games: Family Fun for Everyone : KamloopsParents

I watch too much TV!!? There is no doubt about it.? But one thing that will always get me to turn the television off is the chance of playing a board game with friends and family.? Board games bring the family together.? They create a positive environment for conversation, learning (yes, your kids will learn and they won?t even realize it!) and most importantly FUN!

Board games have seen a recent increase in popularity due partly to marketing ? think the Hasbro Game Night campaign ? but more so due to the increased availability of designer games.

What are designer games you may ask.? Well, they are board games or card games that give recognition to the designer.? Much like a book has an author more and more games have the designer?s name on the box.? Creativity is being recognized.? These games originated in Europe but are now being published in North America.? The popularity of these ?Euro? games has grown so much that now many of these new designer games are being designed and published in North America.

These new games open up new worlds of discovery.? A family can gather around a table and build railway routes across North America (or just about any other part of the world), become explorers, discover new lands, build settlements, become an archaeologist racing through a temple full of dangers, colonize Mars, try to save rats from a sinking ship, race NASCAR or Formula 1 cars and even become bean farmers.? The themes are endless!

Games are no longer about rolling dice and moving with no end of the game in sight.? They are so much more!? Many of these ?new? games require planning ahead, strategic thinking, cooperation, and collaboration while having a set time limit!? Your kids will have to think and it won?t even hurt!

Over the coming months, I will be introducing new games that are ideal for family game play.? I hope these games will inspire you to sit down with your family, open a box and explore the adventures within.

Clive Lovett is a husband, father, board game hobbyist, an organizer of BIGCON (Kamloops Games Convention), and facilitator of Family Games Nights that are have been held in Elementary Schools in the Kamloops area.? He has a collection of nearly 300 board and card games that he is willing to play at any given opportunity.? For more information contact Clive at clovett65@shaw.ca

Our first game? Kids of Carcassonne

2 ? 4 players

15 minutes

Age 4+

$23.95 online, $30.00+ through local stores

It is the 14th July and the people of Carcassonne are celebrating Bastille Day.? To keep the kids busy and to let them celebrate the people of Carcassonne release all the dogs, sheep and cows into the park for the children to chase and capture.? Players take on the role of a group of children trying to find the animals in the park.

Each player has a group of meeples (wooden tokens in the shape of people) of the same colour that represent their group of children.? In turn players draw and reveal a landscape tile, creating the park as each tile is placed.? The tiles reveal pathways that connect and show children, in the players? colours, playing on these pathways.? Once a pathway has been closed off, each player places meeples on the children of their corresponding colour on the pathway.? The first player to get all their children (meeples) on the board is the winner!

This is a great game for kids 4+.? The artwork is very attractive and the meeples are just plain cool!? After a couple of plays your kids will develop basic strategies by developing connections that allow them to get their meeples on the board faster than their opponents.

Family Thoughts

Dad #1: Probably one of the best starter games for young kids!? A great game that children can play without the assistance of an adult.? Creating a different landscape every time the game is played is one of my favourite aspects of the game.

Mom #1: ?I love watching my daughter think and strategize.? It is a game that is great for kids but also keeps my attention ? and it plays quickly.

Sophie, Age 8: ?It is fun and I have to think and I like beating my parents!

Mom #2: I love watching my kids get into the game, and look out for one another. ?It?s a chance for us to work together and still ?against? one another, also. ?It?s simple and I enjoy watching the littles get excited when they close a road!

Dad #2: Adults and kids can play this game because there is a little bit of strategy involved but there is also a lot of luck.

Hunter, Age 7: ? I like that type of game. ?It?s fun and I like playing with my little brother and sister.

Arlington National Cemetery Web Map and Mobile App for iOS and Android

Some interesting news from D.C as the Arlington National Cemetery has released an interactive map (ANC Explorer) available through its website and through a free smartphone app (iOS, Android, and BB). Using geospatial technology, visitors to Arlington can now search the database for markers of family and loved ones or search for notable, historical grave markers.

About the service from Boston.com?Officials say the new app makes it easier for people walking the cemetery to locate a loved one?s burial place. The app can be downloaded at the cemetery?s visitor center. The database has been the subject of a painstaking review and even now is not 100 percent complete. Katharine Kelley, the cemetery?s director of accountability, said that about 99.4 percent of the nearly 260,000 gravesites, niches and markers have been verified.

According to the official announcement, In the future, ANC Explorer will offer features such as emergency and event notifications, restroom and water fountain locations, shuttle stops, and self-guided tours ? see more at www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/ancexplorer.

Report: NJ third-highest in-state tuition costs

The cost of higher education continues to grow.

The College Board says the sticker price of in-state tuition at four-year public universities climbed an average of roughly $400 this fall to $8,655, an increase of nearly 5 percent. The report largely blames state cuts for rising tuition. Add on room-and-board charges and the full cost for students living on campus rose nationally to $17,860.

New Jersey has the third-highest published in-state tuition charges, at more than $12,000. New Hampshire topped the list at more than $14,000 while Wyoming was on the low end at less than $4,300.

Report co-author Sandy Baum says higher education is devouring an ever-increasing share of family income, but the numbers could also signal that unsustainable trends in costs, borrowing and aid are at last beginning to break.

Can Controversial Ocean Iron Fertilization Save Salmon?

What's been described as a "rogue" geoengineering experiment is really an effort, however flawed, to restore salmon abundance

dumping-ironADDING IRON: By adding iron to the Pacific Ocean, as pictured here, the Haida Salmon Restoration Corp. hoped to restore lost salmon abundance--and generate carbon credits too. Image: Courtesy of HSRC

In a bid to restore lost fish abundance, the Haida Salmon Restoration Corp. (HSRC) undertook to mimic the effects of a volcanic eruption by fertilizing the ocean with iron. The idea was to provide the missing nutrient for a plankton bloom that would then trickle up the food web and restore salmon?with the ancillary effects of gathering data on the ocean food web and, potentially, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

"What if this is a means by which ocean pastures can be stewarded and brought back to health?" asks Russ George, chief scientist of the expedition as well as a controversial businessman with a history of attempting to start CO2-removal schemes ranging from reforestation to ocean fertilization. "This is a tiny village of people trying to take care of their backyard."

Old Masset village on the Haida Gwaii Islands off the British Columbia coast did this by contracting George and others to initiate the largest such intentional ocean fertilization effort to date. It authorized the release of roughly 110 metric tons of iron dust, 91 metric tons of the iron sulfate fertilizer commonly used as a lawn treatment and employed in other scientific experiments, and nearly 20 metric tons of the iron oxide found in soils around the world. "It's micronutrient enrichment," Jason McNamee, operations officer and corporate director for the HSRC, told a press conference on October 19. "We took a bag of iron, and we slapped it over one square kilometer [of ocean]."

To do that, this past July the HSRC team motored more than 300 kilometers west from the Haida Gwaii Islands to an ocean eddy in the fishing vessel Ocean Pearl. The area had previously been scouted by collecting water samples since January and lies outside Canadian territorial waters. The team also used more than 20 autonomous oceangoing robots, including two bright yellow gliders and 20 Argo drifter robots on loan from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to survey the scene?work that is ongoing. Over the course of several days the researchers then released the 110 metric tons into the fishing boat's wake in an attempt to raise the levels of iron in the water from one or two parts per trillion up to five to 10, although both concentrations are estimates.

Satellite images as well as maps of chlorophyll abundance appear to show that the iron did indeed fuel a plankton bloom in August. But questions remain: Was it the right kind of bloom to bury carbon? Will it have any effect on the salmon?

Ocean restoration
The HSRC's basic idea is born out of marine biology as well as observations of the aftermath of volcanic eruptions in the region. For example, a lack of iron limits the growth of microscopic plants in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica and elsewhere, a fact that prompted marine biologist John Martin to famously muse: "Give me half a tanker of iron, and I'll give you the next ice age."

In the summer of 2008 Mount Kasatoshi in Alaska's Aleutian Islands blew, sending volcanic minerals, including iron dust, far to sea and prompting plankton blooms across the Gulf of Alaska. At the same time, years and years of decline in returning salmon populations led researchers to expect few of the fry from 2008 to return in later years, only to find a record salmon run in Canada's Fraser River in 2010.

Big oil pushed to cut gas flaring

A conference in London on Wednesday aims to press oil firms to reduce gas flaring - the burning of natural gas at oil production sites.

Flaring mostly happens in remote areas where gas at the surface as an oil by-product cannot be brought to consumers.

The World Bank says $50bn (?31bn) in fuel goes up in polluting smoke yearly.

It says countries are starting to clamp down, but should do more. Friends of the Earth says flaring should be banned entirely.

The conference convenes the Global Gas Flaring Reduction partnership, started by the World Bank in partnership with governments and major oil firms 10 years ago.

The World Bank says there have been substantial improvements, with a 40% cut in flaring volume in Russia, and a 29% reduction in Nigeria.

But it says flaring still wastes 140 billion cubic meters of gas a year - equivalent to a third of the annual gas consumption in the European Union. The practice emits around 400 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

It is working to get the gas sold to market, re-injected into the ground or used to make energy at the oil rig itself.

It said there needs to be substantial progress in Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Mexico, Nigeria and some Russian autonomous regions. Qatar, host of the forthcoming world climate talks in December, is making steps to improve, it says.

Kevin Bortz, director for natural resources at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development admitted that some firms considered it impossible economically to justify collecting the gas from some small remote fields.

Environmentalists have called for all flaring to be banned.

You don't own Kindle books, Amazon reminds customer

2 hrs.

On a dark and stormy night, an employee of your local bookstore strolls into your home, starts tossing books you'd purchased over the last few years into a box, and???despite your protest???takes them all away without saying a word.

Thankfully that's not what happened to Linn Jordet Nygaard. Well, not exactly.?The Norwegian woman?found herself on the wrong side of bureaucracy, but the outcome was much the same (without as much mud on the carpet): Amazon turned off her Kindle account, blocking her from her own books. And they wouldn't tell her why.

"Two weeks ago my Kindle started showing stripes on the?screen and I contacted Amazon support," Nygaard told NBC News. "Someone immediately found the Kindle in the system and told me they?would replace it free of charge. They could only ship the replacement?to UK because it was originally purchased there, and I told them I?would find an address the next day. (I live in Norway, but have a?friend who lives in London.)"?

Nygaard was pleased with Amazon's prompt service, she told us, even though this was her second Kindle to fall victim?to "stripes" on the ePaper screen.

But when Nygaard attempted to log into her Amazon account the next day, her account was suspended???and with it access to her library of 43 books.

Those friendly phone-based customer support folks couldn't access Nygaard's account either, and she was passed on to "account specialists" who only communicated via email. That's when things took a Kafkaesque turn (as documented by her friend, Martin Bekkelund, on his blog). A man named Michael Murphy with Amazon UK's "Executive Customer Relations" told Nygaard her account had been determined to be "directly related to another which has been previously closed for abuse of our policies." Which policies? He wouldn't say. What other account? Murphy wouldn't share that, either.

Instead, Murphy would only pass on this shrilly authoritarian boilerplate:

Per our Conditions of Use which state in part: Amazon.co.uk and its affiliates reserve the right to refuse service, terminate accounts, remove or edit content, or cancel orders at their sole discretion.

Please know that any attempt to open a new account will meet with the same action.

Now just to spoil the story, I'll skip to the happy ending for Nygaard: After taking her story public, Amazon saw the error of their ways and restored her Kindle library. She's still waiting on her replacement Kindle, but in the meantime has access to her library through the Kindle iOS app on her iPad.

But Amazon doesn't get?off the hook so easily. When we?reached out to the company Monday, their PR representative would only send us a canned response they'd dropped into their customer forum: "We would like to clarify our policy on this topic. Account status should not affect any customer's ability to access their library." (Amazon loves copying-and-pasting, it seems.) Our follow up question ??"Why wasn't [Nygaard] told why her account was cancelled?" ??hasn't been answered yet.

And it probably won't be. Nygaard's little dust-up with Amazon isn't, in and of itself, a big deal. But it serves as a bitter reminder that we don't ever truly own the digital goods and software we buy online. Instead, we rent them, or hold them in a sort of long-term lease, the terms of which are brokered and policed exclusively by the leaseholder.?

As Boing Boing's Cory Doctorow put it in a blog post yesterday:??

This fine print will always have a clause that says you are a mere?tenant farmer of your books, and not their owner, and your right to?carry around your "purchases" (which are really conditional licenses,?despite misleading buttons labeled with words like "Buy this with one?click" ? I suppose "Conditionally license this with one click" is?deemed too cumbersome for a button) can be revoked without notice or?explanation (or, notably, refund) at any time.

The core issue might actually be a simple matter of semantics: when we click a digital button that is labelled "Buy," we expect that we're actually buying something. But we're not buying anything, we're licensing it. Just last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the first-sale doctrine does not apply to software???or e-books. Or apps. Nor pretty much everything you "Buy" online that doesn't get shipped to your home in a cardboard box.

Those long End User License Agreements you have to read before you use a new piece of software? Those are are legally binding, because you've clicked a button labeled "Agree." But for some reason, online retailers can label their buttons "Buy" when they actually mean "Rent," and there's nothing we can do about it save filing a lawsuit.

You could call Nygaard's experience a tempest in a teapot, a matter of a few hundred dollars worth of goods that, after a little public outcry, were fixed without issue. But you'd?still be pretty angry if and when it happens to you. (It is worth noting that despite Amazon's stated policy that customers can still access their previously purchased Kindle library even if their account is suspended, Nygaard couldn't download her books to a new device because her account was suspended.?

As she explained to us, "Before I started emailing Mr. Murphy, I could not log in to my account from Web or iPhone. And my Kindle?screen was broken so the fact that the books were still there didn't?help me much."

I was curious if there was any merit to my idea of attempting to hold retailers to these "Truth in Buttons" terms, so I asked Intellectual Property attorney Seth Greenstein, who wrote about about case law for reselling e-books a couple years back, if the notion held water. As?Greenstein?explained in an email to NBC News, it's not all completely settled:

All sales through Apple and other online retailers are subject to terms of use that set forth the conditions of sale. You may buy a track from the iTunes Store that can be used on a certain number of devices, or a copy of an e-book that comes with restrictions as to the ability to lend or the devices on which it is viewable ? a ?sale? with ?conditions.? The ?conditions? apply only to the person who entered into the agreement; they do not necessarily bind a third party.

In the patent context, the Supreme Court this term has granted review of a case to determine whether first sale privileges are defeated by a purchase ?with conditions.? Typically this arises where the seller marks products ?single use only.? The question is whether that is enforceable only under contract law, in which case it applies only to the purchaser; or, as a matter of patent law, against anybody. Why does this make a difference? Take a case I litigated in which Lexmark placed a ?single use? type of restriction on its cartridge boxes attempting to prevent its aftermarket competitors from refurbishing and refilling cartridges and selling them for far less than the price of a new cartridge. If the restriction is upheld under patent law, Lexmark could claim these aftermarket companies infringe its patents. If not, the aftermarket competitors may be lawful. The courts found that the first sale doctrine (called ?patent exhaustion?) trumpted the single use restriction. Now the Supreme Court will have the last word.

If the world's governments determine that customers don't have the same right of ownership over digital goods as we do over our material goods, the least they could do is force companies Amazon to be truthful about what is sold, and what is actually just rented. And it will probably take a lawsuit or legislative action to force Amazon to speak truthfully about the transactions, if only because it changes the perceived value in a customer's mind: $15 to rent a file that contains a book that can be taken away from you at any time, without explanation or recourse, starts to sound a little expensive.

Community Garden to host home canning workshop | The Hub

Can you imagine canning your own cans?Canning and preserving your own food can seem scary, admits Hay River Community Garden president Rebecca Bruser. But she says it?s a great way to save money and stay healthy.

That?s why Bruser is hosting a home canning and preserving workshop this Saturday, Oct. 27 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Diamond Willow Caf?, hoping to take the intimidation factor out of the process.

?It?s a little bit scary for people that haven?t done it before. There is some reading involved. There are certain amounts of time that things need to remain in the canner or you can get botulism. It definitely takes some learning, which is why I think unless we have group training sessions like this, people will be too scared to try it,? Bruser said.

Bruser said she?s hoping for a turnout of around 15 people.

?We?re asking people for a $5 registration fee to hold their spot? and so we?ll know how many supplies to bring,? she said.

The five bucks will go a long way. For the workshop, the group will be making a special antipasto from Bruser?s family recipe that they get to take home when they?re done.

Bruser herself has been canning for about two years, and said she got involved because of her work with the community garden. Once the garden was up and running and producing food, Bruser and the other gardeners needed a way to preserve it so it all wouldn?t go to waste.

?There are a lot of ways you can preserve things. You can blanche and freeze things. Herbs you can dry, but canning is a big one for a lot of things. I think it?s one of the best ways of preserving things,? she said.

While the majority of home canners today are over 50 years old, Bruser said the activity is gaining popularity in the environmental movement and becoming more mainstream.

?The majority of people who still can are older people who learned it from their parents, or really hard core granola nature types to take it upon themselves to read up and do it. We?d really like to see more people doing it,? she said.

The other major benefit to canning is that it can be a real money saver. Home-grown canned goods can be up to 60 per cent cheaper than grocery store purchases, and a canning kit only costs around $25 dollars, Bruser said.

To sign up for the workshop, contact Pat Burnstad at Joey?s Sweets and Things.

Organic food and drink market increasing in China | Australian Food ...

  • October 24, 2012
  • Kate Carey

Organic food and drink products are increasing in popularity in China according to new research by a leading consumer research company, Mintel. The Mintel study on consumer lifestyles in China found that 80 per cent of urban Chinese consumers claim that organic food and drink products ?are worth paying for.?

Mintel?s report said that 56 per cent of urban Chinese consumers have claimed to have increased their spend on organic products, and over half of Chinese consumers had purchased organic fresh foods in the past year. Furthermore, the report showed that 22 per cent of those surveyed had purchased frozen organic food.

The most common organic products purchased by Chinese consumers included fresh milk, cooking oil, pork, beef and chicken. Mintel reported that 75 per cent of those surveyed said that supermarkets were the most common place to purchase organic products.

Paul French, Chief China Market Strategist at Mintel, said that the increase in the organic food market in China could be perceived as a means of ?self-protection? from food contamination.

?There were seven major food scares in China during 2011, and they reflect the range and scope of the challenge that the food and drink market faces. Food scares around tainted infant formula have definitely made their mark and today nearly half (43%) of urban Chinese consumers say that they check the label of infant formula products,? Mr French said.

Mr French?s comments follow reports as far back as 2009 regarding Chinese food safety and a more recent nation-wide campaign to improve food safety systems in China.

Mr French said that the significant rise in organic consumption illustrated a desire by higher income earners in China to purchase products ?perceived to have a stronger provenance of origins.?

?The success of foods grown and produced for export, and those foods from ?trusted? foreign sources, are providing a level of ?confidence? that is seeing consumers engage more effectively with the brands,? Mr French said.

The Mintel report also said that 87 per cent of Chinese consumers are likely to spend more on foods labelled as ?all-natural.? The Mintel report showed that urban Chinese consumers are significantly concerned with labels on food and drink products. Mintel reported that 78 per cent of those surveyed check the label for the product Net Content, 67 per cent check the Country of Origin, and 66 per cent check the industry certification on the label.
