Three-time undefeated state wrestling champion Tyler Askey had no intentions of committing to a college a few months ago.

The standout from Northgate, who already had earned his share of All-American honors prior to arriving in high school, was prepared to be patient with his college choice while carrying a career record of 148-0 into his final varsity season.

But a trip to the University of Virginia earlier this summer changed all that.

At the start of the early contact period for recruiting on July 1, Askey wasted little time making a verbal commitment to Virginia, which finished second in the ACC last season under seventh-year head coach Steve Garland.

Having already taken several visits to schools, including trips to Central Michigan and the universities of Missouri and Minnesota, the Viking 170-pounder quickly changed his initial plans to wait after one-on-one sessions with Garland as well as assistant coaches Alex Clemsen and Jordan Leen.

For Askey, the chance to work with Leen ? whom he watched win a national championship at Cornell ? was one of many opportunities he couldn?t pass up. When he was first interviewed by The Newnan Times-Herald as an eighth-grader at Madras Middle, Askey said he wanted to attend the Ivy League school in upstate New York.

?Looking back when I started who would have thought I?d choose Virginia?,? he said. ?It was an awesome trip. Everything looked like what I thought a college environment would be like. Great people, great coaches. I went to lunch individually with each of them and I felt they were very strong, Christian men.?

Virginia finished in a three-way tie for first place in the seven-team ACC standings joining Maryland and Virginia Tech. The team finished the regular season at 11-1. Askey would be the first Georgian on the roster barring another recruit this year.

Askey has been nursing a shoulder injury from during this year?s USA Wrestling Southeast Regionals. He breezed through three rounds before suffering the injury during his third consecutive technical fall.

?[The doctors] thought it might be a torn labrum at first, and that would have been bad,? he said. ?They came back, though, and said I had some nerve damage. I?ve just been rehabbing it.?

Askey has won 27 tournaments in USA Wrestling competition since 2008 including a victory in both the Georgia Games and a tournament at Collins Hill earlier this year.

He is the fifth Northgate senior to verbally commit to a Division I school, joining volleyball player Elle McCord (Georgia) and football players Sean Spencer (Vanderbilt), Brandon Facyson (Virginia Tech) and DeAndre Johnson (Georgia) in football.
