Army amputee completes air assault school

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) ? Sgt. 1st Class Greg Robinson has become the first amputee to complete Army air assault school, a course so grueling his prosthetic leg broke twice over the 10 days spent rappelling down ropes, navigating obstacle courses and completing strenuous road marches.

Each year thousands of soldiers are physically and mentally tested at the Fort Campbell school. Instructors said Robinson accomplished everything other participants did and trainers cut him no slack even though he lost part of his right leg on a deployment to Afghanistan in 2006.

When Robinson joined teammates at a brief graduation ceremony Monday at the Sabalauski Air Assault School, others called his success a testament to what can be achieved by amputees. War wounds from Iraq and Afghanistan and the recent bombing at the Boston Marathon have highlighted the challenges amputee patients face in recovering.

An inspiration to the Boston bombing victims? Robinson, a 34-year-old noncommissioned officer from Elizabethtown, Ill., said his attitude was one of just wanting to grit it out and complete the same program he sends soldiers to who are under his command.

"Right now, I am a platoon sergeant," Robinson told reporters after graduating. "I have roughly 30 men in my platoon. As a leader, I didn't want to tell my soldiers that they needed to go to air assault school, if I am not air assault qualified."

On Monday, he had his followers: dozens of soldiers from his unit lined up to congratulate Robinson after he graduated. His 4-year-old daughter, Drew, and his wife, Amanda, gave him hugs and kisses.

The 34-year-old noncommissioned officer from Elizabethtown, Ill., toughed out Monday's 12-mile road march even after he had to repair his prothesis in mid-trek.

Robinson was wounded in 2006 during an attack while on a major military operation. But he said his traumatic injury wasn't going to prevent him from meeting some of the Army's toughest standards or finishing his career in the Army.

"It's not my job; it's my lifestyle," said Robinson, who has deployed four times in his 16 years in the military.

The 101st Airborne Division ? unlike other airborne units in planes ? uses helicopters to quickly drop troops into combat and move equipment on the battlefield.

Each day of the course began with running a couple of miles. Troops were expected to carry a 35-pound ruck sack as they complete their tasks. Though he ran with a noticeable limp, his boot and trousers covered his prosthetic leg and generally made him indistinguishable from the others. He also learned to rappel from a tower and maneuver past obstacles.

Robinson said he decided about six months ago to take on the program, though he had to get a doctor's approval. Now he hopes his accomplishment will encourage other wounded soldiers with their recoveries.

"It's not a disability if you don't let it slow you down," he said.

His instructor, Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Connolly, said there was some concern at one point whether he was going to make it through when a piston in his leg stopped working on the obstacle course.

"He got down and fixed it, reattempted the obstacle and went back on," Connolly said.

Capt. Greg Gibson, an Army nurse with Robinson's 2nd Brigade Combat Team, said his attitude was what pushed him to finish the course. Gibson said that in his experience treating amputees, attitude and will are critical to recovery.

Gibson worked with amputees at Walter Reed before coming to Fort Campbell and said many patients struggle at first with the loss of a limb, their own body image and the pain of multiple surgeries.

"Some of these guys never even learn to walk on a prosthesis, let alone go through the air assault course," Gibson said.

Gibson said Robinson is adept at using his prosthesis, which is below the knee, but the air assault course requires using muscles in a way Robinson would have found very difficult.

One part of the obstacle course, nicknamed "The Tough One," is a mandatory 3-meter rope climb in which participants wrap their feet around a rope and pull themselves up with their hands and feet. Gibson said completing that climb had to have been arduous for an amputee.

In light of the traumatic leg injuries suffered at the Boston Marathon, including several amputations, Gibson said Robinson's accomplishments translate beyond the military world.

"He's had this thing happen to him that most would see as a career ender," Gibson said. "He's a shining example that life can carry on."

Oil falls below $93 after US growth falls short

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil extended losses Monday, falling below $93 a barrel after U.S. economic growth fell short of expectations.

Benchmark crude for June delivery was down 31 cents to $92.69 a barrel at midafternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 64 cents to close at $93 in New York on Friday.

U.S. economic growth accelerated to an annual rate of 2.5 percent from January through March from an anemic pace in the previous quarter. But the markets were expecting growth of 3 percent or better.

The U.S. figure followed a slowdown in China's economic growth in the first quarter, raising questions about demand in the world's biggest oil-consuming countries. Manufacturing growth in China is also slowing.

At the same time, oil supplies and production are ample, adding to pressure for the oil price to fall.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline was down 0.8 cent at $2.819 a gallon.

? Heating oil fell 0.3 cents to $2.863 a gallon.

? Natural gas added 3.9 cents to $4.262.

Yankees' Teixeira making solid progress with wrist

CLEVELAND (AP) ? Mark Teixeira isn't dreading his next doctor's visit. He's actually excited about it.

New York's star first baseman said he expects to be cleared to begin swinging a bat as early as Friday in his recovery from a wrist injury that will sideline him for the first month of the season. Teixeira has been on the disabled list since March 31 with a torn sheath in his right wrist.

When the Yankees return to New York on Friday, Teixeira will be examined by Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser, the team's hand and wrist specialist, at Yankee Stadium before the series opener against Baltimore.

"I'm confident the doctor will let me take swings tomorrow," Teixeira said Thursday in New York's clubhouse before the Yankees played the finale of a rain-shortened series against the Indians. "I feel great and I'm getting better every day. There's no pain. I could not be happier with the progress. The plan is to take BP for a week ? it could make my wrist sore as part of the process ? but that is a definite milestone."

It's more encouraging news for the Yankees, who have gotten positive reports this week on All-Stars Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson.

Jeter has resumed on-field hitting at the team's training complex in Tampa, Fla., after being shut down last month by soreness in the left ankle he broke in the playoffs last October. Granderson, who broke his right wrist when he was hit by a pitch during spring training, was able to remove a stabilizing brace on Thursday and throw.

"That's big," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Granderson. "That means the bone has healed and it's just the rehab process and getting him to where he can play in some games and getting him back here. It's real encouraging."

Girardi has been watching videotape of Jeter's workouts and said he's gotten favorable reports.

"I think he's OK," Girardi said when asked for the latest on the Yankees' captain. "I didn't get any alarming news."

Teixeira, who turned 33 on Thursday, said his rehabilitation program is on schedule. When his injury was diagnosed March 6, the Yankees estimated he would need at least eight weeks to recover. If he receives the go-ahead from Rosenwasser, Teixeira expects to spend New York's six-game, seven-day homestand working his way from dry swings to hitting with a fungo bat and then soft tosses.

"Hopefully, the first day we're in Toronto (April 19), I'll take BP on the field with the team," said Teixeira, who has 338 career home runs. "Then, when we go to Tampa (April 22), I'll stay there and play some simulated games and some in extended spring training. Hopefully, I'll be back with the team after that."

Girardi was excited to hear the five-time Gold Glove winner was moving toward a return to New York's lineup.

"So far, so good," he said. "Everything has been positive in his rehab. The true steps are going to be in the swinging part. He's been strengthening it and he was in that brace for a while but everything has been encouraging so far."

Teixeira joked that once he arrives in Florida he may have to take extra precautions when facing some of the Yankees' pitching prospects.

"We'll tell those young guys to throw straight and away," Teixeira said, laughing. "We've got to protect our arms and wrists down there."

Teixeira blamed his injury on "overuse," and said he would cut back on his work load in the batting cage going forward. He has not yet been cleared to throw, but isn't concerned.

"I make like two throws a week, so there is no reason to stretch it, but I don't see it being a problem," he said. "I take so many swings being a switch-hitter. I'm going to emphasize quality over quantity from now on."

A career .279 hitter, Teixeira is wearing compression wraps on both wrists during his recovery, but he'll just tape them ? for the first time in his career ? once he begins playing in games.

Teixeira is in the fifth season of an eight-year, $180 million contract with the Yankees, who signed him as a free agent in 2009. He batted .251 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs in 123 games last season.

Drunk Fruit Flies! Lots of Animals Self-Medicate

The use of medicine can no longer be considered a solely human trait, if it ever was. An ever-growing list of animals use various chemicals to self-medicate and to treat peers and offspring, usually to fight off and prevent infection.

And this list runs the gamut, with the usual suspects ? primates chewing on medicinal herbs ? as well as some more surprising drug-takers, such as fruit flies, ants and butterflies, a new study finds.

Previously, scientists thought such behavior was unique to primates and more intelligent animals, where self-medication could be learned and passed on from parents to offspring. But according to the study scientists, who examined recent research in the field, animals from insects to chimpanzees may self-medicate as an innate response to parasites and perhaps for other reasons as well.

"Self-medication in animals is really common, more common than previously thought," said study author Jaap de Roode, a researcher at Emory University in Atlanta.

Drunk fruit flies

Medication can be taken either in response to an active infection or to prevent future parasitic attacks of an animal or its offspring, according to the paper, published online today (April 11) in the journal Science.

Fruit flies, for example, will lay their eggs in more alcoholic fruit (produced by natural fermentation) when parasitic wasps are hanging around, said Todd Schlenke, an Emory researcher who wasn't involved in the review paper. "In the flies, increased blood-alcohol content causes the wasp maggot parasites living in their blood to die in a particularly gruesome way, by having their internal organs evert outside their bodies through their anuses," Schlenke told LiveScience.[The 10 Most Diabolical and Disgusting Parasites]

Whereas the alcohol can have negative effects on the developing flies, it also makes infection less likely. When parasitic wasps are scarce, the flies prefer to lay their eggs in less fermented fruit. Infected larvae can also preferentially seek out areas of a fruit with more alcohol, Schlenke said.

"We think there is a cost-benefit analysis going on here ? if you don't need it, don't use it," de Roode said. "If it's very likely you'll be infected, you may use it regardless. If your risk is much lower, it's easier to see how you'd use it only when infected."

Ants have also been found to "medicate" their colonies against infection, bringing back chemicals with antifungal properties. And monarch butterflies fight parasites by laying their eggs in toxic milkweed plants.

Helping humans

Animal medicine can be useful to humans in a variety of ways. For instance, bees collect plant resins with antifungal and antimicrobial properties and bring it back to their hives to help them fight infection. Beekeepers have selected against this trait since resin is sticky and hard to work with; this has likely made bees more prone to infection, de Roode said.

These medicines could also possibly be used to fight infection in humans or other animals. One chemical in bee resin has been shown to have inhibitory effects against HIV-1, de Roode said. Another plant eaten as a medicine by primates is now being used as an antiemetic (to treat nausea and vomiting) in African livestock, said Juan Villalba, a researcher at Utah State University who wasn't involved in the study.

Villalba's work has shown that animals can benefit when artificial medicines are made available to them, to eat when necessary. A polymer called polyethylene glycol helps sheep handle a diet high in tannins, and lambs can learn to eat this medicine from observing their parents doing it, Villalba said.

This paper "will bring more attention to the idea that medication is an important and common kind of immune response that organisms use in nature," Schlenke said.

Stocks rise; Dow hits another record

Stocks rose on Wall Street Tuesday with the Dow Jones industrial average closing at another record high.?Materials and energy stocks led the gains following a surge in prices for commodities like copper.

Materials and energy companies led the stock market higher Tuesday, sending the Dow Jones industrial average to its second all-time high in a week.

The Dow closed at 14,673.46, a gain of 59.98 points, or 0.4 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index also rose 0.4 percent, closing less than two points below its own all-time high set April 2.

The prices of metals like copper, gold and silver have rebounded this week after slumping for the first three months of the year on waning demand. Oil is also rising following a sharp decline last week.

"You're seeing some pretty decent action in the overall market, with today's leadership coming from the basic materials sector," said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners. "It's an area of the market that does represent some value because it's underperformed."

The rally in basic materials such as precious metals was caused by a weakening of the dollar against other currencies, HSBC analyst Howard Wen said. Commodities are typically priced in dollars and a decline in the currency allows overseas buyers to purchase materials at lower prices.

Materials companies were the biggest gainers of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500, rising 1.1 percent. Energy companies posted the second best return, advancing 0.8 percent. Those two groups have been among the weakest in the market this year.

On Tuesday the S&P 500 rose 5.54 points to 1,568.61. The index closed at a record high of 1,570.25 on April 2. The Nasdaq composite gained 15.61 points, or 0.5 percent, to 3,237.86.

The gains suggested that the Dow and S&P 500 may be poised to break out of a trading pattern they've followed for the last three weeks.

Stocks have mostly moved sideways since the middle of March. The Dow has alternated between small gains and losses after starting the year on a tear. Signs of slowing growth and concerns about the outlook for Europe had checked investors' confidence.

As companies report results this week, investors will be looking to see whether they are feeling any impact from government spending cuts that kicked in recently, said Jim Russell, investment director at U.S. Bank. They will also want to know what effect there will might from the ongoing debt crisis in Europe.

Alcoa, traditionally the first company in the Dow to report results, was flat at $8.39 after the company posted its earnings late Monday. Online auto retailer CarMax, home goods retailer Bed Bath & Beyond and the banks Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase report later this week.

"The market is looking for companies to fill in those blanks," said Russell.

Cliff's Natural Resources, an iron ore mining company, rose $1.66, or 8.8 percent, to $20.45. The company's stock is still down 47 percent this year. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, another mining company, was up $1.34, or 4.1 percent, at $33.76.

First Solar soared after the solar panel maker issued a better-than-expected forecast for its 2013 results and solid predictions for the following two years, helped by continued growth in shipments. The stock price rose $12.31, or 46 percent, to $39.35.

Small company stocks lagged the market. The Russell 2000 index two points, or 0.2 percent, to 929.34. The index has slumped this month after rising 12 percent in the first quarter and performing better than both the Dow and S&P 500.

While stocks are struggling to extend their gains from the start of the year, bonds have rallied.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was unchanged at 1.75 percent Tuesday. However, the benchmark rate has fallen from a high of 2.06 percent reached March 11 as demand for low-risk assets increases.

Maryland lawmakers pass medical marijuana bill

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ? The Maryland General Assembly has approved a measure to allow medical marijuana programs at academic medical research centers that decide to participate.

The Senate passed the bill on Monday by a vote of 42-4, sending the measure to Gov. Martin O'Malley. It had already been approved by the House of Delegates.

O'Malley, a Democrat, said Monday he "probably would" sign the bill.

The measure includes a provision enabling the governor to suspend the program, if the federal government decides to prosecute state employees who administer it, a key part O'Malley said he required.

It's not expected patients would be able to get marijuana under the program for several years, but the bill puts Maryland on the path to developing a framework to do so.

ARM CortexA57 processor taped out, ready for fab

Your current smartphone just took another spin backwards on the obsolescence cycle thanks to a new landmark from ARM and TSMC: the first Cortex-A57 has reached the "tape out" stage, meaning it's ready for mass production. The new chip will use TSMC's 16nm FinFET technology (though the transistors will be 20nm for the A57) and will bring up to three times the CPU power of current chips for the same battery life -- or a maximum of five times the battery life at the same speed. The companies said they ramped the chip from design to tape out in a mere six months, though there's no timetable for its arrival in specific devices. When it does start hitting next gen phones and slates though, expect the performance charts to get singed.

Are you on a quest to unravel the mystery of how to earn instant online profits? There are all sorts of ways to do this, however the most sure-fire way is most likely by getting involved in Affiliate Marketing.

A normal person can get into Affiliate Marketing using his or her own advertising efforts as an Affiliate to bring people to the Affiliate Vendor's internet site. The Affiliate gets paid a commission when that visitor purchases the Vendor's item. Often, commissions are earned just by the Affiliate entering their name and email address into a Vendors online form!

As soon as you select which item to advertise, you acquire what's called an "affiliate link". This stringy link contains your Affiliate ID so that, when clicked on during the purchase process, the Affiliate Vendor knows to pay you your commission. The most widely known Affiliate Marketing sites are Amazon, Clickbank, Ebay Partner Network and Commission Junction, to name a few. These business have a multitude of products in several niches for your choosing.

Nonetheless, in order to figure out how to earn instant online profits with Affiliate Marketing, you need to know where to take the initial step.

The first move is to choose a niche that you would like to sell in. Ideally, select a specific niche that you are passionate about; a subject that you might be able to discuss all day, since it's easier to advertise things that interest you. Some good examples of prevailing niches are Relationships, E-Business & Marketing and Health & Fitness, to name but a few.

You'll need to google the "Google Keyword Tool" and "Google Trends" to research your niche and product in a strategic, insightful manner. Google Trends will tell you if your niche is still in the mainstream and you can use the Google Keyword Tool to see if your chosen niche keywords are getting a decent amount of search traffic every month.

Next comes your affiliate product selection. Only pick high-grade products whose Vendors can demonstrate their successful sales record. You need that special something that's going to rid your buyer of their pain and solve a huge problem they've been faced with that has kept them up at night worrying!

So now that your niche and product selection process is done, it's time to discover how to earn instant online profits by putting the following handy tips into action:

You can start off by building a product review site. Basically, you summarize the pros and cons of the product in a short article that needs to appear unbiased. Thus, it would be a good idea to actually purchase the item so you can put forward your opinion in a thorough, honest manner. However, in these tough economic times you may have to opt instead for looking around forums and other testimonial sites of your particular product to gather enough information for your review. Always remember to sprinkle your affiliate link throughout your review post, of course!

You can also jump on the social media band wagon by setting up either a Facebook fan page or a tab on your current business page. This should distinctively display your sales item in a monetized fashion or at least bring your fans right to your affiliate sales form.

You've probably heard mention of "squeeze" or "landing" pages before, right? Well, their purpose is to "squeeze" information, like names and email addresses, out of prospects and they can be built right inside Facebook or take the form of a one page website. You then take that assembled information and put it all into an autoresponder system. "AWeber" is an excellent place to open one of these types of accounts. What happens next is that your prospective clients get a series of email messages in their inbox automatically over the course of a week or two. The first emails should be "warm and friendly" since you'll need to build a relationship with your readers to get them to know and like you. After a while, you'll hopefully build up enough trust that your audience will click on your cleverly inserted links in the later emails and end up as paying customers!
Of course, the option is always there to put your affiliate product in the limelight by posting a quick review on your personal blog that contains your affiliate link, of course.

You can also harness the power of YouTube by creating personal video reviews of your affiliate product and uploading them to your YouTube channel. Better still, you can embed the videos into your product review site! This could also increase your search engine ranking, as Google owns YouTube and loves it when videos are featured in blogs.

Another effective approach would be to join online forums that are relevant to your chosen niche. Don't just go in there and start selling your product right away: Instead, participate in conversations and answer questions to help people out, at first. Then, after some time, you can start mentioning your product, showing the forum members how it can solve their problems or meet their needs.

The above pointers are simply a few ideas to illustrate how to earn instant online profits. You can mix and match these different approaches to suit your particular product-and throw in any other new techniques you come across as well, of course!
I hope you obtained some useful insight into the Realm of Affiliate Marketing by reading this. There's nothing to stop you from immediately launching your affiliate product promotion now!

Egyptian satirist questioned for insulting Mursi, freed on bail

By Tom Perry

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian prosecutors questioned Egypt's most popular television satirist on Sunday over allegations that he insulted President Mohamed Mursi, a case regarded by his critics as new proof of a crackdown on dissent.

Bassem Youssef turned himself in after the prosecutor general issued an arrest warrant for him on Saturday. He was released on bail of 15,000 Egyptian pounds ($2,200).

Youssef rose to fame with a satirical online show after the uprising that swept autocrat Hosni Mubarak from power in 2011. His program, which has been compared to the Daily Show of U.S. satirist Jon Stewart, is now broadcast on television.

The comedian is accused of insulting Islam and undermining the standing of Mursi, a Muslim Brotherhood politician freely elected last June. The prosecutor general issued the warrant after at least four legal complaints filed by Mursi supporters.

Arriving at the prosecutor general's office, Youssef was wearing an oversized version of a graduation hat modeled on one donned by the president when he was awarded an honorary degree in Pakistan earlier in March.

He had sported the hat on his widely watched show, one of many satirical jabs at Mursi. Last year, he poked fun at Mursi's repeated use of the word "love" by singing a love song to a heart-shaped pillow with the president's face printed on it.

FEARS FOR FREE SPEECH

The investigation has raised fears for freedom of expression in the post-Mubarak Egypt. "It is an escalation in an attempt to restrict space for critical expression," said Heba Morayef, Egypt director at Human Rights Watch.

It is the most high-profile of a series of similar cases brought on accusations of insulting Mursi. Two dozen such cases were brought in the first 200 days of his rule - four times as many as during Mubarak's 30 years in power, according to human rights lawyer Gamal Eid.

Prominent liberal politician Mohamed ElBaradei said it was the kind of action only seen under "fascist regimes". "It is the continuation of the failed and ugly moves to thwart the revolution," he wrote on Twitter.

Mursi has hardened his tone in response to recent violent protests against him and the Brotherhood. After promising a week ago to take steps to protect the nation, Mursi vowed on Tuesday to "break the neck" of anyone who threw a petrol bomb.

The unrest is frustrating efforts to revive the economy.

Youssef was questioned after the prosecutor general issued five arrest warrants last week for prominent political activists accused of inciting violence against the Muslim Brotherhood, the group that propelled Mursi to power in last year's election.

The United States, which supplies $1.3 billion in military aid to Egypt each year, expressed concern last week over reports that arrest warrants had been issued for political activists.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. government was also concerned this case was being investigated while others, including cases where protestors were attacked outside Mursi's palace in December or cases of "extreme police brutality" had "not been appropriately investigated".

Opposition figures say that the prosecutor, Talaat Ibrahim, is biased towards Mursi, who appointed him last November, and they want him removed from office.

A court ruled last week that Ibrahim's appointment was illegal and that he must step down. Ibrahim, who denies any bias, plans to appeal against the ruling.
