US warns Iran against closing key oil passage (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? The U.S. strongly warned Iran on Wednesday against closing a vital Persian Gulf waterway that carries one-sixth of the world's oil supply, after Iran threatened to choke off traffic through the Strait of Hormuz if Washington imposes sanctions targeting the country's crude exports.

The increasingly heated exchange raises new tensions in a standoff that has the potential to spark military reprisals and spike oil prices to levels that could batter an already fragile global economy.

Iran's navy chief said Wednesday that it would be "very easy" for his country's forces to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the passage at the mouth of the Persian Gulf through which about 15 million barrels of oil pass daily. It was the second such warning by Iran in two days, reflecting Tehran's concern that the West is about to impose new sanctions that could hit the country's biggest source of revenue, oil.

"Iran has comprehensive control over the strategic waterway," Adm. Habibollah Sayyari told state-run Press TV, as the country was in the midst of a 10-day military drill near the strategic waterway.

The comments drew a quick response from the U.S.

"This is not just an important issue for security and stability in the region, but is an economic lifeline for countries in the Gulf, to include Iran," Pentagon press secretary George Little said. "Interference with the transit or passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz will not be tolerated."

Separately, Bahrain-based U.S. Navy 5th Fleet spokeswoman Lt. Rebecca Rebarich said the Navy is "always ready to counter malevolent actions to ensure freedom of navigation."

Rebarich declined to say whether the U.S. force had adjusted its presence or readiness in the Gulf in response to Iran's comments, but said the Navy "maintains a robust presence in the region to deter or counter destabilizing activities, while safeguarding the region's vital links to the international community."

Iran's threat to seal off the Gulf, surrounded by oil-rich Gulf states, reflect its concerns over the prospect that the Obama administration will impose sanctions over its nuclear program that would severely hit its biggest revenue source. Iran is the world's fourth-largest oil producer, pumping about 4 million barrels a day.

Gulf Arab nations appeared ready to at least ease market tensions. A senior Saudi Arabian oil official told The Associated Press that Gulf Arab nations are ready to step in to offset any potential loss of exports from Iran. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment on the issue.

Saudi Arabia, which has been producing about 10 million barrels per day, has an overall production capacity of over 12 million barrels per day and is widely seen as the only OPEC member with sufficient spare capacity to offset major shortages.

What remains unclear is what routes the Gulf nations could take to move the oil to markets if Iran goes through with its threat.

About 15 million barrels per day pass through the Hormuz Strait, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

There are some pipelines that could be tapped, but Gulf oil leaders, who met in Cairo on Dec. 24, declined to say whether they had discussed alternate routes or what they may be.

The Saudi official's comment, however, appeared to allay some concerns. The U.S. benchmark crude futures contract fell $1.98 by the close of trading Wednesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, but still hovered just below $100 per barrel.

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner played down the Iranian threats as "rhetoric," saying, "we've seen these kinds of comments before."

While many analysts believe that Iran's warnings are little more than posturing, they still highlight both the delicate nature of the oil market, which moves as much on rhetoric as supply and demand fundamentals.

Iran relies on crude sales for about 80 percent of its public revenues, and sanctions or even a pre-emptive measure by Tehran to withhold its crude from the market would already batter its flailing economy.

IHS Global Insight analyst Richard Cochrane said in a report Wednesday that markets are "jittery over the possibility" of Iran's blockading the strait. But "such action would also damage Iran's economy, and risk retaliation from the U.S. and allies that could further escalate instability in the region."

"Accordingly, it is not likely to be a decision that the Iranian leadership will take lightly," he said.

Earlier sanctions targeting the oil and financial sector added new pressures to the country's already struggling economy. Government cuts in subsidies on key goods like food and energy have angered Iranians, stoking inflation while the country's currency steadily depreciates.

The impetus behind the subsidies cut plan, pushed through parliament by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was to reduce budget costs and would pass money directly to the poor. But critics have pointed to it as another in a series of bad policy moves by the hardline president.

So far, Western nations have been unable to agree on sanctions targeting oil exports, even as they argue that Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon. Tehran maintains its nuclear program ? already the subject of several rounds of sanctions ? is purely peaceful.

The U.S. Congress has passed a bill that penalizes foreign firms that do business with the Iran Central Bank, a move that would heavily hurt Iran's ability to export crude. European and Asian nations use the bank for transactions to import Iranian oil.

President Barack Obama has said he will sign the bill despite his misgivings. China and Russia have opposed such measures.

Sanctions specifically targeting Iran's oil exports would likely temporarily spike oil prices to levels that could weigh heavily on the world economy.

Closing the Strait of Hormuz would hit even harder. Energy consultant and trader The Schork Group estimated crude would jump to above $140 per barrel. Conservatives in Iran claim global oil prices will jump to $250 a barrel should the waterway be closed.

By closing the strait, Iran may aim to send the message that its pain from sanctions will also be felt by others. But it has equally compelling reasons not to try.

The move would put the country's hardline regime straight in the cross-hairs of the world, including nations that have so far been relative allies. Much of Iran's crude goes to Europe and to Asia.

"Shutting down the strait ... is the last bullet that Iran has and therefore we have to express some doubt that they would do this and at the same time lose their support from China and Russia," said analyst Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix in Switzerland.

Iran has adopted an aggressive military posture in recent months in response to increasing threats from the U.S. and Israel of possible military action to stop Iran's nuclear program.

The Iranian navy's exercises, which began on Saturday, involve submarines, missile drills, torpedoes and drones. A senior Iranian commander said Wednesday that the country's navy is also planning to test advanced missiles and "smart" torpedoes during the maneuvers.

The war games cover a 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) stretch off the Strait of Hormuz, northern parts of the Indian Ocean and into the Gulf of Aden near the entrance to the Red Sea and could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels in the area.

The moderate news website, irdiplomacy.ir, says the show of strength is intended to send a message to the West that Iran is capable of sealing off the waterway.

"The war games ... are a warning to the West that should oil and central bank sanctions be stepped up, (Iran) is able to cut the lifeblood of the West and Arabs," it said, adding that the West "should regard the maneuvers as a direct message."

Report: 2 Of 5 CT High School Grads Finish A College Program

A new report says that three-quarters of Connecticut's public high school graduates go on to college ? but that only 41 percent complete a certificate or degree within six years.

Thirty-three percent enroll in college but don't finish. The other quarter don't enroll at all.

The report ? the first in the state ever to provide college completion rates by high school ? looked at the high school Class of 2004 and at how many of each school's students had completed a college program by 2010.

The students who enrolled but did not finish a college program were of particular concern, said Robert Kennedy, interim president of the state Board of Regents for Higher Education.

"What a shame, what a waste of human resources," Kennedy said. "We really need these people to be educated to the extent that they can be."

Kennedy, who is new to Connecticut, said he also expected the state's college completion rate to be higher than 41 percent.

"The 41 percent probably reflects a better-than-average college completion rate," he said, "but better than average isn't good enough."

The Board of Regents, the state Department of Education and a group called the Connecticut P-20 Council released the report, which is based on data from the National Student Clearinghouse. The P-20 council, which was established in 2009 to improve transitions from preschool through college and careers, made the request that initiated the research.

The report focuses on college completion, the executive summary says, because "while it is important for students to attend college, it is even more important for them to finish."

Statistics previously have been available that highlight various aspects of Connecticut's college graduation rates, but none have provided the high school by high school detail found in this report.

Kennedy said that he hopes the report will prove useful to high schools and allow them to see how they compare.

"This data should really help them enormously in providing a focus on where the students are succeeding [and] where more resources are needed," he said.

Released just a week before the Jan. 5 education workshop summit that the governor called for in advance of the legislative session, the report and its statistics illuminate crucial issues that Connecticut faces to ensure that all students are well-schooled and ready to succeed in higher education and in careers.

The new data on college completion reflect the vast achievement gap seen in so many assessments of educational progress in Connecticut through the years ? between well-off and poor students, between white and minority students, between suburban and urban school districts.

In towns such as Avon, Simsbury and Glastonbury that have one high school each, the percentage of students in the Class of 2004 who completed two- or four-year college programs by 2010 was 65 percent, 64 percent and 59 percent, respectively.

By comparison, the rates at Hartford's three high schools were 14 percent (Hartford Public), 15 percent (Weaver) and 16 percent (Bulkeley). New Britain High School had a college completion rate of 29 percent.

Students need to be ready for college when they arrive ? and that preparation has to start during elementary and secondary education, Kennedy said, adding that he wants to work closely with the state's new education commissioner, Stefan Pryor, to make that happen.

The report also said that additional research was needed to understand better what makes students more likely to succeed in college.

One of the regents' goals, Kennedy said, was to make it easier for students to transfer credits from one college to another. Some colleges have standing agreements to honor credits from other institutions, Kennedy said, but "not across all campuses and not seamlessly."

Students are much more likely "to stick it out and get that associate's degree" at a community college, Kennedy said, "if they know their credits are going to transfer. ? If we could impact that [33 percent who enroll but don't finish] by 5 [percent] or 10 percent, that would be huge, and I think we can."

Militant dies in Israel air strike

An Israeli air strike has killed a Palestinian militant preparing to launch rockets at Israel from the Gaza Strip, the military said.

The Palestinian was named as Muaman Abu-Daf, 21, by Gaza officials. One other Palestinian was injured.

The Israeli military said Abu-Daf was a senior operative in a small cell which supports global jihad. The group was responsible for laying explosives near the Gaza-Israel border and helping plan an attempted attack on the Israel-Egypt border this week, according to the military.

The targeted group also recently fired rockets at Israel, they said.

The killed militant's family said he had been a member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, affiliated with the Fatah party of West Bank-based Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.

Abu-Daf's body was displayed at a Gaza City mosque for Friday prayers, wrapped in a yellow Fatah flag.

Earlier this week, Israel carried out air strikes in Gaza, targeting militants it said were involved in the attempted attack on the Israel-Egypt border.

Christmas Presents Thief Busted by iPad Tracking Signal

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. (KTLA) -- Technology, and some top-notch police work, saved Christmas for two Southern California families.

On Christmas morning, a homeowner in Westlake Village was awakened by a noise, and found an intruder inside his house, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. said in a news release.

The victim chased the suspect a short distance, but the intruder got away.

It was discovered that, among other items, an iPad was taken from the victim's home.

Later that same morning, the victim called the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff's station to say that the stolen iPad was giving a signal from a nearby home.

Deputies responded to the location and recovered the iPad.

They arrested 20-year-old Patrick Krewson, a resident of Vista, in San Diego County.

Detectives conducted a follow-up investigation, and connected Krewson to a burglary in Vista on Dec. 22.

Two flat-screen televisions, a laptop computer and more than 40 Christmas presents intended for children were stolen in that burglary.

Deputies searched Krewson's home in Vista and found all of the stolen property, including the presents.

When detectives notified the Vista victim that her Christmas presents had been found in time to give them to the children for Christmas, she began to cry, authorities said.

Krewson was booked for burglary at the Malibu/Lost Hills Station, and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

San Diego County Sheriff?s Department will file additional burglary charges.

Untethered jailbreak now available for pre-A5 iPhones, iPads and Touches

It's just a few weeks since pod2g revealed his untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 and -- boom -- all of a sudden it's up for the DL. The exploit has been incorporated into redsn0w 0.9.10, the Pwnage Tool and Chronic Devteam's Cydia package, and it works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (including the CDMA version), iPad 1, iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G, so long as they've been updated to iOS 5.0.1. Meanwhile, pod2g is reportedly now looking for a way to snap the shackles on A5-based devices too, but hopefully only after he's taken some rest -- a burned-out jailbreaker is no good to anybody. Full instructions are at the source link.

New law requires safety features on golf carts

Associated Press

Golf cart owners in Georgia will soon have stricter requirements to follow if they plan to drive their carts on roadways.

A new law taking effect Jan. 1 creates a separate classification of personal transportation vehicles for golf carts. It also sets standards for towns and counties wanting to create ordinances allowing drivers to use the carts on residential streets and multi-purpose pathways. The law requires that golf carts have braking systems, a reverse warning device, tail lamps, a horn and hip restraints.

The carts must weigh less than 1,375 pounds and not top speeds of 20 mph. The carts must also be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The bill was signed into law by Gov. Nathan Deal this year after his predecessor, Gov. Sonny Perdue, vetoed a similar measure last year. It had backing from one of Georgia's key industries ? golf cart manufacturing.

The Georgia-based International Light Transportation Vehicle Association, formerly known as the National Golf Cars Manufacturers Association ? which prefers the term "car" to "cart" ? estimates that 90 percent of the golf carts used in the U.S. are made in Georgia.

"Safety is what we're concerned about," said Fred L. Somers Jr., secretary of the association. "Unless you put in some safety equipment accessories, you're just asking for trouble."

And, he added, golf carts are a cheaper form of transportation for people who live in cities where they don't need to travel far to go to the grocery store.

Just 23 Georgia cities have golf cart ordinances, with some places like Peachtree City near Atlanta and Hahira in South Georgia creating golf cart lanes along local roadways, according to the Georgia Municipal Association. Spokeswoman Amy Henderson said the ordinances began popping up a couple of years ago when gas prices spiked, pushing people to cheaper alternatives for getting around town.

State lawmakers who sponsored the legislation did not return requests for comment.

Other laws going into effect next week include a measure allowing cities with 911 centers to require retailers selling prepaid cell phones to charge a fee to support the emergency systems. Towns can charge businesses up to 75 cents per sale, though the fee doesn't apply to sales of $5.00 or less.

Key parts of Georgia's new law targeting illegal immigration are also set to take effect. Starting Jan. 1, any employer with 500 or more employees will have to use a federal database called E-Verify to check the employment eligibility of all new hires.

The mandate is being phased in with smaller businesses that have 100 or more employees required to use the database starting July 1, and companies with more than 10 employees to start using E-verify by July 2013.

Employers with 10 or few employees are exempt from this requirement.

The law's sponsor and supporters said they wanted to deter illegal immigrants from coming to Georgia by making it tougher for them to work in the state. Already, any company with a federal contract is required to use E-Verify, and Georgia has required state and local government agencies and their contractors to use the database since 2007.

But the new law could cause trouble for many businesses, experts say.

"Many Georgia businesses are confused with respect to the provisions of the law that have to do with E-Verify," said Atlanta lawyer Teri A. Simmons, who advises businesses on immigration and employment matters. "Within most businesses, human resources professionals are already dealing with so much that it's hard to also fit in E-Verify training and administration."

When Georgia's governor signed the law in May, Georgia joined Arizona and several other states that have recently enacted tough laws taking aim at illegal immigration. Federal judges have since blocked all or parts of the various laws, and Arizona's is headed to the U.S. Supreme Court next year.

Also taking effect Jan. 1 is a provision that any agency administering public benefits must require each applicant to provide at least one "secure and verifiable document." A list of acceptable documents was provided by the attorney general's office over the summer.

The new law also instructs the state agriculture department to submit a report to the governor and the heads of each chamber of the state Legislature by Jan. 1. The department was tasked with examining the effect of immigration on the state's agriculture industry and providing suggestions to reform a federal guest worker program. The department also was supposed to evaluate the feasibility of a state guest worker program.

North Korean power-behind-throne emerges as neighbors meet (Reuters)

SEOUL/BEIJING (Reuters) ? North Korean television on Sunday showed power-behind-the-throne Jang Song-thaek in the uniform of a general in a sign of his sway after the death of Kim Jong-il, and Japan's prime minister said the region had entered a new phase following Kim's demise.

The footage, which North Korean television said was shot on Saturday, showed Jang on the frontrow of top military officers who accompanied Kim Jong-un, the youngest son of Kim Jong-il and his anointed successor, paying their respects before Kim's body.

The choreography around Kim's death is one of the secretive North's few clues to the emerging configuration of power in this poor and isolated state that has rattled neighbors with nuclear tests and military brinkmanship.

A Seoul official familiar with North Korea affairs said it was the first time Jang has been shown on state television in a military uniform. His appearance suggested that Jang has secured a key role in the North's powerful military, which has pledged its allegiance to Kim Jong-un.

North Korea announced on Monday Kim Jong-il had died of a heart attack on December 17. His body is lying in state in a mausoleum in Pyongyang. He was believed to be 69.

Kim Jong-un was hailed by state media on Saturday as "supreme commander" of the North's 1.1 million-strong armed forces, the title held by his father.

A senior source told Reuters this week Pyongyang will shift from a strongman dictatorship to a coterie of rulers including the military and Jang, Kim Jong-un's uncle.

Jang married the daughter of the country's revolutionary founder, Kim Il-sung, in 1972, joining the ruling family that has forged its own form of dynastic rule.

"AN NEW PHASE"

In Beijing, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that their two countries shared a stake in preserving stability in North Korea in a "new phase."

"The death of Secretary-General Kim Jong-il has brought East Asia to a new phase," Noda told Wen at the start of bilateral talks in China's capital.

"Peace and stability of the Korean peninsula is in a common interest for both Japan and China," Noda told Wen.

"I believe it is timely that we can exchange views and information on this matter with China, which is the chair country of the six-party talks and has the biggest influence on North Korea."

Noda is the first regional leader to visit Beijing since Kim Jong-il's death was announced on Monday, leaving his young son Kim Jong-un as leader of North Korea, which has rattled the region with nuclear tests and military confrontation.

China is North Korea's sole major economic and diplomatic partner, and the United States and its regional allies have long pressed Beijing to use its influence to rein in Pyongyang.

China has also hosted the six-party talks, which have sought to coax North Korea into abandoning its nuclear arms ambitions in return for aid and security steps.

Those talks bring together North and South Korea, the United States, Japan, Russia and China.

Constraining North Korea is especially important for Japan, which is well within range of the North's long-range missiles and wants Pyongyang to resolve the emotive issue of the fate of Japanese citizens kidnapped to help train spies decades ago.

"I hope we can sincerely exchange views on how to overcome abduction, nuclear and missile issues," Noda told Wen, referring to North Korea.

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel, File)

(AP) ? An Iowa caucus campaign that has cycled through several Republican presidential front-runners entered its final week Monday, as unpredictable as the day conservatives began competing to emerge as Mitt Romney's chief rival.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, released a new television commercial for the state in which he cited a "moral imperative for America to stop spending more money than we take in. It's killing jobs," he said.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry countered with an advertisement that said four of his rivals combined ? none of them Romney ? have served 63 years in Congress, "leaving us with debt, earmarks and bailouts."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who has invested more time in Iowa than any other contender, countered that "most Americans now believe that a little bit of experience going into a job like president is probably a good thing."

Santorum was the only presidential candidate in the state during the day.

That changes Tuesday, with bus tours planned by Perry, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, all eager to energize their existing supporters and attract new ones.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul arrives Wednesday. Recent polls suggest he is peaking as caucus day approaches, a rise that has him tied with Romney or even ahead, and drawing more scrutiny for his views.

The result figures to be a short but intense stretch of campaigning through small towns and even smaller towns, the sort of one-on-one politicking that has largely vanished in the electronic age.

Failing that, it will pay tribute to the types of cuisine that prosper in early 21st century America.

The Perry bus will belly up to Doughy Joey's in Waterloo and to the Fainting Goat in Waverly, an establishment whose website says "After 10 p.m., we are the type of place your mothers warned you about." Perry also will visit a vineyard and winery in Carroll.

Bachmann will make an early-winter stop at a Dairy Queen, as well as Pizza Ranch establishments in Harlan, Red Oak and Atlantic, three localities with a combined population of 17,282.

It's not all about the food, though.

Perry has a stop arranged at the Glenn Miller Museum in Clarinda, population 5,301, where the great bandleader was born.

The Texas governor also has a distinction that none of his rivals can boast, a town that shares his name. Thus, Perry will visit Perry.

There were signs of strategic shifts as candidates struggled to stand out in advance of the straw poll next week that inaugurates the round of primaries and caucuses that will pick a nominee to oppose President Barack Obama next fall.

Perry's new ad shows images of Gingrich, Paul, Santorum and Bachmann as it criticizes Congress and renews the governor's call for halving lawmakers' pay and time spent in Washington.

Despite the commercial's implication, Gingrich and Santorum were out of Congress when the multibillion-dollar financial bailouts of 2008 occurred. Paul and Bachmann voted against the legislation.

Still, the approach taken suggests the Texas governor is more concerned with outpacing Paul, Bachmann, Santorum and Gingrich on caucus night that he is in defeating Romney.

The former Massachusetts governor, making his second try for the White House, has a well-funded and well-organized campaign nationally and in Iowa, as well as allies who are spending heavily on television advertisements through an independent organization known as a super PAC.

While others have periodically risen to challenge him, Romney has kept his support from seriously eroding in the polls, consistently remaining near the top.

A victory in Iowa does not necessarily translate into the Republican presidential nomination. Yet history suggests that contenders who finish farthest behind next week will quickly drop out, underscoring the significance of the struggle to emerge as Romney's chief rival.

The most recent presidential hopeful to surge and then falter is Gingrich. The former House speaker's campaign imploded last summer and still shows the after-effects: a shortage of funds to counter attack ads in Iowa, and failure to qualify for the primary in Virginia in March.

After insisting he would run a purely positive campaign, Gingrich let it be known he was about to attack Romney on one of his presumed areas of strength, his economic proposals.

R.C. Hammond, a spokesman for Gingrich, said the candidate would make the case that Romney has advanced "very timid ideas that will do little to get people back to work."

Gingrich favors an end to taxes on investment income and dividends, while Romney wants to end them only for individuals with incomes of $200,000 or less.

Gingrich also has proposed an optional 15 percent flat tax on income. Under the plan, taxpayers could stay in the current system, which has a top tax rate of 35 percent on taxable income above $379,150, or switch to the new flat rate, which would apply to income at all levels.

Romney favors retaining the current graduated income tax system, with lower rates than currently exist.

Gingrich is at least the fourth front-runner to falter since the campaign began in earnest in Iowa earlier this year.

Bachmann, who won a straw poll at the Iowa State Fair last summer, was briefly atop polls in the state. So, too Herman Cain, who subsequently suspended his campaign after a woman claimed she and Cain had a long-term extramarital affair.

Perry also soared to the top of the surveys when he entered the race last summer, then fell after a string of subpar debate performances.

Santorum has yet to experience the type of sudden surge that others in the race enjoyed but has doggedly campaigned in all 99 of the state's counties in hopes of rallying social conservatives to his side.

Study linking virus and chronic fatigue retracted (AP)

NEW YORK ? A prestigious scientific journal is retracting a controversial 2009 report that linked chronic fatigue syndrome to a virus.

In an unusual move, the journal Science is taking that step on its own. Normally, authors retract their own research papers when serious problems arise after publication.

But Science has lost confidence in the report and the validity of its conclusions, editor-in-chief Bruce Alberts writes in Friday's issue. He said most of the authors have agreed in principle to retract the paper "but they have been unable to agree on the wording of their statement." A retraction signed by all the authors "is unlikely to be forthcoming," Alberts wrote.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by severe fatigue for at least six months, impaired memory and other symptoms.

The 2009 paper, from scientists at the Whittemore Peterson Institute in Reno, Nev., the Cleveland Clinic and the National Cancer Institute, reported finding a virus called XMRV in blood cells of some patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. That raised hope that a cause of the mysterious illness had been found, although other viral suspects over the years had proven to be false leads.

But follow-up studies found no evidence of such a link. Last May, Science published two reports suggesting the original finding was due to lab contamination.

At the time, Alberts published a statement declaring that the validity of the study was "now seriously in question."

Then in September, the authors retracted some of the data, citing contamination.

In his statement on the full retraction, Alberts said the authors had also acknowledged omitting important information about the study's procedures in an illustration of some lab results.

Robert Silverman of the Cleveland Clinic, one of the paper's 13 authors, said in a statement Thursday that he was pleased by the full retraction. He said he had sought one this summer after finding that blood samples were contaminated.

Through a spokeswoman, another study author, Francis Ruscetti of the cancer institute, declined to comment.

Annette Whittemore, president of the Whittemore institute, said in a statement that her organization remains committed to discovering the roots of the disorder. "It is not the end of the story, rather it is the beginning of our renewed efforts," she said. "We ... look forward to the rigorous review of our scientific research."

A key figure in the research, Judy Mikovits, is no longer with the Whittemore institute.

Russian spacecraft delivers 3 to orbiting station (AP)

MOSCOW ? A Soyuz spacecraft safely delivered a Russian, an American and a Dutchman to the International Space Station on Friday, restoring the permanent crew to six members for the first time since September.

But just as concerns over the reliability of the Soyuz have eased, a different version of the Soyuz rocket failed Friday during an unmanned launch. It was the latest in a string of spectacular launch failures that have raised questions about the state of Russia's space industry.

The craft carrying mission commander Oleg Kononenko, NASA's Don Pettit and European Space Agency astronaut Andre Kuipers had traveled through space for two days after blasting off from Baikonur, the Russian-operated cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The ship docked at the orbiting station at 5:19 p.m. (1319GMT) Friday.

About two and half hours later, the three new crew members floated through an opened hatch to join NASA's Dan Burbank and Russians Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin, who had arrived on the station in November.

"I can't think of a prettier picture than seeing all six back on board the space station," NASA's William Gerstenmaier told the assembled crew during a video linkup with Russian Mission Control outside Moscow.

Families of crew members, who had joined space officials to watch the docking, also sent their greetings, with Kuipers' young child singing him a song in Dutch.

The six crew members will work together on the International Space Station until mid-March.

The failed launch of an unmanned Progress cargo ship in August had raised doubts about future missions to the station, because the Soyuz rocket that crashed used the same upper stage as the booster rockets carrying Soyuz ships to orbit.

The next manned launch was delayed until Russian space officials could determine the cause of the Progress failure and it went off without a hitch in November. The crew on that mission overlapped for eight days with the three crew members remaining on the station, who then returned to Earth later that month.

However, on Friday, a newer version of the Soyuz failed to put a Meridian communications satellite into orbit when launched from Russia's Plesetsk cosmodrome. Space agency head Vladimir Popovkin said the cause was engine failure.

"What happened today was a highly unpleasant situation," Popovkin was quoted by state news agencies as saying. "It confirms that the (aerospace) industry is in crisis and its weakest link is engine building."

The failures Friday and during the Progress launch in August both took place during the third stage. The Soyuz-2.1b that crashed Friday, however, has a different third-stage engine, the ITAR-Tass news agency said.

Friday's failed launch was the sixth in the past year.

Last December, Russia lost three navigation satellites when a rocket carrying them failed to reach orbit. A military satellite was lost in February, and the launch of the Express-AM4, described by officials as Russia's most powerful telecommunications satellite, went awry in August.

In November, Russia sent up its ambitious Phobos-Ground unmanned probe, which was to go to the Phobos moon of Mars, take soil samples and return them to Earth. But engineers lost contact with the ship and were unable to propel it out of Earth orbit and toward Mars. The craft is now expected to fall to Earth in mid-January.

No extradition for Irishman accused of selling North Korean forged dollars (The Christian Science Monitor)

Dublin, Ireland ? It should have been Ireland's trial of the century: The elderly leader of a communist breakaway group from the IRA, whose former party comrades are now in government, sat accused by the US State Department of distributing ?superdollars? ? perfect forgeries of US dollars ? printed by the North Korean government to underwrite the dictatorship's failing economy, and, in some of the more thriller-like reports, to undermine the US economy at the same time.

And yet, other than the initial allegations, the long-running extradition battle barely registered in the press in Ireland or abroad. This morning, it drew to a close as Ireland's High Court ruled against extraditing former Irish political party leader Se?n Garland to the United States to face charges of distributing counterfeit dollars allegedly printed by North Korea.

Speaking at a hearing this morning, Justice John Edwards said the court would not grant the application and will furnish the reasons for doing so on Jan. 13. The decision had originally been due in October, after the hearing adjourned in July.

Think you know Europe? Take our geography quiz.

Mr. Garland was indicted by the US for circulating North Korean forgeries of American $100 bills in the 1990s in cooperation with the Russian Communist Party and British criminal contacts. Garland denies the charges, and claims the American government wants to put him in Guant?namo Bay or, at the very least, a "Supermax" prison from which he will never see daylight again.

Garland was first arrested on the charges in Northern Ireland in 2005, but while awaiting extradition, he jumped bail and fled to the Republic of Ireland, where he lives. He was rearrested by Irish authorities in 2009.

The Rev. Chris Hudson, chair of the Stop the Extradition of Seán Garland campaign, today issued a statement supporting the judgment.

?This has been a horrendous six-year ordeal for Se?n, his family, and friends,? said Mr. Hudson, ?and I am delighted with the progress we have made today. I have always believed that the US extradition demand was a vindictive act by the former Bush administration designed to punish and isolate North Korea and anyone who had connections with that country.?

Speaking to The Christian Science Monitor in July, Mick Finngean, the current president of the Workers' Party, said the allegations against Garland were absurd and politically motivated, and the US justice system was too slanted. ?There?s no way Se?n Garland, given his opposition to [US foreign policy] and political beliefs, would get a fair trial,? he said. ?The most right-wing fanatics have already presumed him guilty.?

In his bid against extradition, the aging and ailing Mr. Garland gathered significant support across Ireland: 74 current and former lawmakers and many other prominent figures, from trade union leaders to entertainers, had stated their opposition to his being handed over to the US authorities.

The charges are rooted in the history of the Workers' Party, which in decades past, like many Soviet-aligned groups, maintained fraternal links with ruling parties in the Eastern bloc. In this case, the Workers' Party made contacts not only with the Soviet Union, but also with the North Korean regime.

A book documenting the party's rise and fall says the links went deeper than holidays paid for by Kim Il-sung, though. "The Lost Revolution: The Story of the Official IRA and the Workers' Party" by Brian Hanley and Scott Millar claims more than a dozen members of its secretive armed wing, the Official IRA, receiving military training while in Korea in the late 1980s.

Mr. Finnegan disputed the idea of shady connections to the Kim regime. ?The connection to North Korea has always been of a humanitarian nature,? he says. ?And to promote trade and peace ? and we also saw it as a country that was partitioned, like Ireland,? he said.

But many people wonder why the US is putting such effort into going after the obscure figure of Se?n Garland, particularly now that his party has shrunk to a shadow of its former self, the Irish conflict has come to an end, and the cold war is a distant memory.

The answer may lie in the Workers? Party?s history as an offshoot of the IRA with Communist ties, says Mr. Millar. The Workers' Party was once the political wing of the Official IRA (OIRA), which "was fairly close to the Eastern bloc intelligence agencies," says Millar.

Millar?s co-author, historian Mr. Hanley, says the case is linked to ongoing US tensions and politicking over Korea. ?The cold war is over but the US is not finished with North Korea,? he says.

A major source of confusion is the alphabet soup of groups in Ireland styling themselves the Irish Republican Army (IRA). Garland?s group is not connected to the mainstream Provisional IRA ? now usually just referred to as the IRA ? from which the modern political party Sinn Fein evolved. In fact, both the PIRA and OIRA originated in a split in Irish republicanism in 1969.

The OIRA declared a ceasefire in 1972 to focus on its political arm, Official Sinn F?in, later renamed the Workers? Party. The Workers' Party saw electoral success in the Republic of Ireland, but by 1992, the party fractured over the end of the cold war and allegations that the OIRA was still active. Some reform-minded members quit to form a new party, Democratic Left, which eventually merged with Labor, leaving the hardline communist rump as a much reduced force that barely registered at the polls.

Ireland's deputy prime minister, Eamon Gilmore, is a former Democratic Left and Workers' Party member, as are several of his Labor party colleagues.

Think you know Europe? Take our geography quiz.

Mythmaking begins for North Korea's next leader (AP)

Just before North Korean leader Kim Jong Il died, the skies glowed red above sacred Mount Paektu and the impenetrable sheet of ice at the heart of the mystical volcano cracked with a deafening roar.

At least, that's the official account of the supernatural circumstances preceding Kim's death last Saturday, as relayed by the state-run Korean Central News Agency. The news agency is one of the chief propaganda organs tasked with building up the quasi-religious mystique around the Kim family, which has ruled North Korea since its founding in 1948.

The tools for making the myth have been developed over two generations, dating back to Kim's father, late President Kim Il Sung. But with Kim Jong Il's sudden death and the ascension of his young son Kim Jong Un, North Korea's image artisans will have to do it all at warp speed.

Some of the hallmarks of the mythmaking machine in North Korea:

___

THE BLOODLINE

Founder Kim Il Sung remains North Korea's "eternal president" and lies embalmed at his former presidential palace. Son Kim Jong Il took over after his father's death in 1994 in what was the communist world's first hereditary succession. He's now lying in state at the Kumsusan Memorial Palace.

Kim Jong Il is credited with rewriting the main rules behind North Korea's one-family ideology, called the Ten Principles, after being tapped as his father's successor. His revisions revolved around mythologizing the Kim family and making them central to the nation's identity.

The two late leaders' birthdays are the nation's biggest holidays, and even the calendar year begins with Kim Il Sung's birth year, 1912. This year is Juche 100.

With Kim Jong Un poised to extend the Kim family dynasty into an additional generation, North Korea is quickly building the mythology by emphasizing his bloodline and the Kim family legacy, from its roots as revolutionaries fighting the Japanese to their spiritual role as protectors of the North Korean people.

___

THE LEGENDS

Kim Jong Il's official biography says he was "heaven sent," born in a log cabin in Mount Paektu while his father was fighting the Japanese.

"Wishing him to be the lodestar that would brighten the future of Korea, they hailed him as the Bright Star of Mount Paektu," his biography reads.

Lore has it soldiers spread the news of his birth by inscribing the announcement on trees across the country ? a practice that North Koreans continue today by carving the leaders' messages into rocks and mountainsides.

Soviet records, however, reportedly indicate Kim Jong Il was born a year earlier in Siberia.

The account of his death was just as mythic. His obituary in state media called him the "illustrious commander born of heaven," and on Wednesday, KCNA said a Manchurian crane spotted in the city of Hamhung circled a statue of Kim Il Sung for hours before dropping its head and taking off toward Pyongyang. The crane is a traditional Korean symbol of longevity.

"Even the sky seemed to writhe in grief," KCNA said, reporting blinding blue flashes, thunder and heavy snow near the Demilitarized Zone. "He was, indeed, a great saint born of heaven."

The mythmaking for Kim Jong Un has begun as well, with an editorial in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper calling him "born of heaven." However, details of his birth, and the accompanying legend, have not yet been revealed.

A U.S. official told The Associated Press he is 27 years old, though many observers suspect he will skip a few years and celebrate his 30th birthday in January 2012.

That would make for a mystic convergence of numbers: Kim Jong Il would have turned 70 and Kim Jong Un would turn 30 in the year that Kim Il Sung would have turned 100.

___

THE ICONOGRAPHY

A towering bronze statue of Kim Il Sung, his arm outstretched, lords over the capital city from atop Mansu Hill. In the days since Kim Jong Il's death, mourners have been streaming to the hill to lay flowers at the statue as they typically do for the leaders' birthdays and other major occasions.

Kim Il Sung's smiling face also beams from the face of major buildings, though his portrait at the Grand People's Study House in central Pyongyang was replaced this week by one of Kim Jong Il.

Portraits of the two late leaders feature prominently in every building in North Korea, father and son side by side or standing together in colorful portraits, murals and larger-than-life mosaics interspersed in every village and city across the country.

Some also portray Kim Jong Il's mother, Kim Jong Suk, considered the mother of North Korea.

Similar portraits of the next leader, Kim Jong Un, have not been revealed, though his name has begun appearing in recent months on plaques commemorating visits and offering blessings to all three leaders.

North Koreans are never far from their leaders: Most wear small lapel pins of one of the leader's faces on their left side, "close to our hearts," a government official said.

___

THE PROPAGANDA

Most billboards in North Korea carry slogans, not advertisements, with the leaders' main messages. Recent slogans focus on construction and the economy, such as: "Everything in the name of improving the people's daily lives" ? and tout the goal of building a "strong and prosperous nation." Pillars inscribed with "juche," the national philosophy of self-reliance, line country roads.

North Korea has only one state-run TV channel, which shows cartoons in the late afternoon, the news, and soap operas and films in the evening. Major national announcements ? including the news of the deaths of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il ? are made on state TV.

The Korean Central News Agency (http://www.kcna.kp) is the official news agency of the state while the Rodong Sinmun is the newspaper of the ruling Workers' Party. The leaders' names appear in a larger font than the rest of the text.

___

THE LOOK

Kim Jong Un bears a startling resemblance to Kim Il Sung during his early years as leader. Some North Koreans say they were moved to tears after seeing Kim Jong Un for the first time last year because he so resembled his grandfather.

___

THE NICKNAMES

The Kims ruled North Korea under the title "suryong," or "leader," but are often referred to by other titles as well.

Kim Il Sung, who remains the nation's "eternal President," is also commonly called the "Great Leader."

Kim Jong Il was known as the "Dear Leader" until taking power; during his rule, he was called "Great Comrade," "Supreme Commander" and often "Father."

Kim Jong Un was dubbed "Young General" after being made a four-star general in September 2010. He became "Respected General" in 2011, and was elevated to "Great Successor" after his father's death. North Korean state media this week have referred to him as "Outstanding Leader."

___

THE ARTS

The Arirang "Mass Games" are a stunning spectacle of choreography and synchronicity involving 100,000 dancers tumbling and leaping in unison while students use placards to create a huge, cascading wall of images as a backdrop. The performance also is a key tool for broadcasting the North Korean leadership's main political and economic messages.

In 2010, a new section was added paying homage to ally China that featured somersaulting panda bears.

___

THE SONG

"Tramp, tramp, tramp! The footsteps of our General Kim!"

So go the lyrics of the song "Footsteps," released as the leadership began rolling out the succession campaign for Kim Jong Un ? the first hint to the outside world that an heir had been chosen.

In October, young women in traditional Korean dresses and men in Western-style suits danced to the song, clapping their hands above their heads and stomping around the plaza in front of a huge hammer-and-sickle monument.

Another popular tune is the catchy "Song of CNC," an ode to digital technology, which Kim Jong Un is widely credited with pushing as part of North Korea's economic reform.

While North Koreans learn many of the same traditional Korean songs as children in the South ? such as the popular folk tune "Arirang" ? they have their own patriotic tunes, including "Song of Gen. Kim Jong Il," "Glory to Our Great Party" and "We Live in the Embrace of the Leader."

Death toll from Baghdad blasts climbs to 49

(AP) ? The spokesman for the Iraqi health ministry says that at least 49 people have been killed in a wave of violence across the city.

Ziad Tariq says at least 167 people were also wounded in the attacks that struck Baghdad on Thursday morning.

The wave of attacks is the worst to hit Baghdad in months. It targeted neighborhoods around the city in an apparently coordinated campaign of violence designed to wreak havoc.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A series of blasts Thursday morning in Baghdad killed at least 23 people and injured dozens more in a coordinated attack designed to wreak havoc across the Iraqi capital.

The blasts were the worst violence to hit the country since a political crisis between Iraq's Sunni and Shiite factions erupted this weekend. The political spat, which pits Iraq's Shiite prime minister against the highest-ranking Sunni political leader, has raised fears that Iraq's sectarian wounds will be reopened.

Iraqi officials said at least 12 blasts went off early Thursday morning in nine neighborhoods around the city. The violence ranged from sticky bombs attached to cars to roadside bombs and vehicles packed with explosives.

Most of the violence appeared to hit Shiite neighborhoods although some Sunni areas were also targeted.

The worst attack was in the al-Amal neighborhood where seven people were killed in a blast that appeared to target rescuers and officials who came to the scene after a previous explosion. At least four people were killed in one western Baghdad neighborhood when two roadside bombs exploded.

All the information came from police and hospital officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

In the southwestern neighborhood of Karrada, where one of the victims was killed, sirens could be heard as ambulances rushed to the scene and a large plume of smoke rose over the explosion site.

"My baby was sleeping in her bed. Shards of glass have fallen on our heads. Her father hugged her and carried her. She is now scared in the next room," said one woman in western Baghdad who identified herself as Um Hanin. "All countries are stable. Why don't we have security and stability?"

While Baghdad and Iraq have gotten much safer over the years, explosions like Thursday's are still commonplace. They come at a precarious time in Iraq's political history, just days after American troops pulled out of Iraq.

The government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has accused the Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi of running a hit squad that targeted government officials. Al-Maliki is also pushing for a vote of no-confidence against another Sunni politician, the deputy prime minister Saleh al-Mutlaq.

Many Sunnis fear that this is part of a wider campaign to go after Sunni political figures in general and shore up Shiite control across the country at a critical time when all American troops have left Iraq.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the morning's violence. But the coordinated nature of the assault and the fact that the attacks took place in numerous neighborhoods suggested a planning capability only available to al-Qaida in Iraq.

Many of the neighborhoods were also Shiite areas which are a favorite target of al-Qaida. The Sunni extremist group often targets Shiites who they believe are not true Muslims.

Al-Qaida in Iraq is severely debilitated from its previous strength in the early years of the war, but is still able to launch coordinated and deadly assaults from time to time.

U.S. military officials have said they're worried about a resurgence of al-Qaida after the American military leaves the country. If that happens, it could lead Shiite militants to fight back and attack Sunni targets, thus sending Iraq back to the sectarian violence it experienced just a few years ago.

Video: Romney picks up key endorsement

>>> mitt romney is picking up a major endorsement in a key state. he was her pick after talking with every single candidate besides ron paul . governor haley considered a rising star in the party and said romney knows how to turn failing companies around and could do the same for the country. romney is the best choice in her opinion to be president.

>> governor romney is the one candidate that president obama consistently tries to hit and get out of the way. that lets me know he is scared of him and lets me know governor romney has a good fight in him and that's the one president obama doesn't want to go against.

>> do you buy anything nicky haley just said?

>> it's a good get for romney , i guess down in south carolina . the problem that romney continues to have though is he stuck in this 20 to 25% range in all the polls. it's because the anti-establishment wing of the party is not bought into him. having the sitting governor who --

>> with her own problems, i should point out. her record is not perfect.

>> i'm not sure that is going to get him over the hump in a state like his juice.

>> south carolina , gingrich is 42% and mitt romney is to your point hanging in that 23% range at least in that state. he is planning to go to south carolina and do campaigning. i want to bring you in before we have the developing news regarding the sec and civil fraud changes against freddie mac and fannie mae . hith newt gingrich on the association with the agencies you know a lot of them like to target. they lie to taxpayers and the government. when you say the two names, freddie and fanny, newt name follows at least these days. does this continue to get him in hot water.

>> almost certainly. if you saw in the debate he was trying to draw a distinction between lobbying and consulting and being a historian and bachman was relentless and you could hear in the crowd the response that conservatives were not buying it. it seems to be one of the greatest weaknesses and he didn't have an answer for it. you would think knowing this was one of the greatest vulner abilities and one that got off the topic faster. that's something he is going to have to work on.

>> when we hear time and time again when he is hit hard, she known to come back with quippy or punchy moments that get the heat off and to your point, he didn't do that last night. let me bring you in politico that had the headlines and the candidates are slumping forward. we have days left and the holiday mixed in the middle. they are trying to flop across the finish line .

>> they are trying to get across the finish line and not have anyone's candidacy implode. when you talk about the importance of south carolina , we have several weeks before we actually get to south carolina and in terms of newt gingrich land, that is a time. anything can happen between now and iowa and south carolina . quite frankly i would imagine for the romney camp. because the numbers are low, he has stayed. he has been flat. i would imagine they will use this time to take a keep breath and wait and see if the campaign or anyone else implodes between now and iowa .

>> let me bring up the money being spent. they put together ads in iowa . perry spent 1.3 million and supporters have spent several more million in the pro perry aads. mitt romney 500,000 and newt gingrich 200,000. i want to talk about ron paul . the supporters are passionate. when you criticize him, his supporters will go on twitter and facebook and let you have it. i want to talk about the debate moment. some say this will curb the enthusiasm if you will for paul. let's play it.

>> you and i really fear about what's happening here. it's another iraq coming. war propaganda going on. we are arguing the greatest danger that we will have a president that will overreact and we will soon bomb iran.

>> congresswoman bachman launched in on newt gingrich . does this hurt paul?

>> conventional wisdom said yes.

>> he got applause and that was an iowa audience.

>> exactly. in iowa in particular, the republican side has not been as hawkish.

>> i'm not sure it's as unpopula be.

>> i believe it was andrea mitchell who made the comment who were better suited to domestic issues. talking about the home front . he can put himself in a trick bag weather people agree or not. it brought in fire last night. i am curious about mitt romney . he continues with the appeasement line and regarding the president and trying to portray and the suddenlying of the mideast. instantly you had david axel rod send out a tweet as the words were coming out saying tell that or when you say appeasement, think about bin laden . why go down that road. it's like hitting a brick wall .

>> no, and that's a great question. when you are running against the incumbent, you want to go after their perceived weakness and not the strength. one area where the president is strong in all the polls is foreign policy . romney is just not adding any credibility. it's part of the problem that romney had all along. when you are stuck at 20 to 23% in the polls and all do is sit back and hope and watch while all of your opponents implode, at some point they are not going to. instead of playing the front-runner strategy, he ought to speak to the rest of the republican electorate that is not supporting him. that is not supporting him and trying to give them a reason to give him a second look.

>> i want to get michelle in real quick. last word here. was it a mistake for romney to not go in swinging. if you will, for a lack of a better description doing trash talking all week. he did seven different interviews going after newt gingrich and it was like a balloon seeping out of the room.

>> it was. the debate i hate to say it, but after coming off of last saturday, it was boring. we began to see a little bit of juice and fire. it was individual on the stage and didn't get any good jabs? . you have to think that some of the climb and the numbers we saw for newt gingrich were because he is such a good debater and puts a little bit of fire out there and i think that part of the electorate is in the belly of mitt romney .

>> we didn't see a lot of fire for newt and that may have balanced him out. have a great weekend,

An international team of astronomers has identified a candidate for the smallest-known black hole using data from NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The evidence comes from a specific type of X-ray pattern, nicknamed a "heartbeat" because of its resemblance to an electrocardiogram. The pattern until now has been recorded in only one other black hole system.

Named IGR J17091-3624 after the astronomical coordinates of its sky position, the binary system combines a normal star with a black hole that may weigh less than three times the sun's mass. That is near the theoretical mass boundary where black holes become possible.

Gas from the normal star streams toward the black hole and forms a disk around it. Friction within the disk heats the gas to millions of degrees, which is hot enough to emit X-rays. Cyclical variations in the intensity of the X-rays observed reflect processes taking place within the gas disk. Scientists think that the most rapid changes occur near the black hole's event horizon, the point beyond which nothing, not even light, can escape.

Astronomers first became aware of the binary system during an outburst in 2003. Archival data from various space missions show it becomes active every few years. Its most recent outburst started in February and is ongoing. The system is located in the direction of the constellation Scorpius, but its distance is not well established. It could be as close as 16,000 light-years or more than 65,000 light-years away.

The record-holder for wide-ranging X-ray variability is another black hole binary system named GRS 1915+105. This system is unique in displaying more than a dozen highly structured patterns, typically lasting between seconds and hours.

"We think that most of these patterns represent cycles of accumulation and ejection in an unstable disk, and we now see seven of them in IGR J17091," said Tomaso Belloni at Brera Observatory in Merate, Italy. "Identifying these signatures in a second black hole system is very exciting."

In GRS 1915, strong magnetic fields near the black hole's event horizon eject some of the gas into dual, oppositely directed jets that blast outward at about 98 percent the speed of light. The peak of its heartbeat emission corresponds to the emergence of the jet.

Changes in the X-ray spectrum observed by RXTE during each beat reveal that the innermost region of the disk emits enough radiation to push back the gas, creating a strong outward wind that stops the inward flow, briefly starving the black hole and shutting down the jet. This corresponds to the faintest emission. Eventually, the inner disk gets so bright and hot it essentially disintegrates and plunges toward the black hole, re-establishing the jet and beginning the cycle anew. This entire process happens in as little as 40 seconds.

While there is no direct evidence IGR J17091 possesses a particle jet, its heartbeat signature suggests that similar processes are at work. Researchers say that this system's heartbeat emission can be 20 times fainter than GRS 1915 and can cycle some eight times faster, in as little as five seconds.

Astronomers estimate that GRS 1915 is about 14 times the sun's mass, placing it among the most-massive-known black holes that have formed because of the collapse of a single star. The research team analyzed six months of RXTE observations to compare the two systems, concluding that IGR J17091 must possess a minuscule black hole.

"Just as the heart rate of a mouse is faster than an elephant's, the heartbeat signals from these black holes scale according to their masses," said Diego Altamirano, an astrophysicist at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands and lead author of a paper describing the findings in the Nov. 4 issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The researchers say this analysis is just the start of a larger program to compare both of these black holes in detail using data from RXTE, NASA's Swift satellite and the European XMM-Newton observatory.

"Until this study, GRS 1915 was essentially a one-off, and there's only so much we can understand from a single example," said Tod Strohmayer, the project scientist for RXTE at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Now, with a second system exhibiting similar types of variability, we really can begin to test how well we understand what happens at the brink of a black hole."

Launched in late 1995, RXTE is second only to Hubble as the longest serving of NASA's operating astrophysics missions. RXTE provides a unique observing window into the extreme environments of neutron stars and black holes.
