A seasoned Human Resources professional, Pamela kindly shares her thoughts on leadership, being a business owner, and how her former CEO got her involved with Twitter. Enjoy!

State your name. rank, and serial number (aka who you are and what you do).

In my business, my goal is to provide my clients with innovative employee engagement strategies and effective career development programs that help them become more resourceful, responsible and capable of achieving their desired results.

What made you decide to strike out on your own as a business owner?

I have always had a passion to become a business owner but timing never seemed right. This time, the timing and the resources were perfectly in sync. I wanted to do more of what I love on a regular/full-time basis and not just when I could fit it in.

How do you help clients reach their strategic objectives?

  • Consulting to provide sustainable customized strategies that help our clients improve their performance, while maximizing employee attraction, engagement, satisfaction and retention.
  • Training and Development. We are the ?Resourceful Leadership? experts. We provide innovative training and development programs that empower leaders to take responsibility for their results and embrace challenges as opportunities.
  • Career Coaching. We believe professionals should succeed at the level they deserve. We provide dynamic programs that help individuals take control of their careers so they can get the respect, recognition and results they want at work.

Some businesses just focus on one of these at a time. I work to ensure that all three are incorporated into everything I do. If I?m working a consulting contract, I ensure that we deliver the related training and development to their staff and we provide coaching to key individuals who might need a little additional attention.

What is the premise behind ?Responsibility Leadership??

Actually, I?m changing this to ?Resourceful Leadership.??What prompted the change was that at the core of being responsible is being resourceful. I just took it a step deeper. I like to believe that a resourceful leader is a responsible leader. Here?s the premise: leaders can?t possible know everything, and the best leaders recognize, develop and engage talent to bring out the best the talent has to offer. A resourceful leader knows who to tap into and how and recognizes that they don?t HAVE to be the one up front all the time, but is confident and secure enough to allow others to have their center stage moment.

What is the #1 misconception people have about you?

Good question. What I have found is that people underestimate my talent, skills and abilities. Because I am a genuinely nice person (really I am) there have been leaders who have thought that they were hiring a ?yes? person when in fact they were hiring a very competent leader. I think that always catches them off guard. Some handle it well, but others....oh boy - that is a book waiting to be written.

How do you overcome that?

I let my work and my reputation speak for itself. Recognizing that not everyone is going to like you is quite freeing. I just try to do the best I can, help others do the best they can and enjoy life.

The Core Values I?ve adopted for my company are these:

  • Exceed Expectations
  • Inspire Excellence
  • Enjoy Life

How did we meet?

We met in about 2010 at a SHRM social media roundtable at the Gaylord in Washington. We invited the top social media guru?s (that would be you) to give us tips and insights on how we might enter the social media world.(Editor?s note: That would not be me. But I graciously accept the compliment.).?In that meeting you gave me some really good tips on how to improve my social media presence.

What prompted you to get involved with social media?

Initially it was a mandate from CEO at the time. He said ?I want everyone in Twitter? and so it began. We attended the Strategy Conference that year and there was a speaker who talked about Twitter. I don?t believe ANYONE in the room knew about or had heard of Twitter. We all looked at each other like we?d just heard a bomb explode. Then she went into detail about what it was and her foray into Twittersville. Shortly after in a meeting with the CEO who was in the room, he asked if we were aware of Twitter and suggested we all join the Twitter Club. Now this was before we knew the full capabilities of Twitter. I think had he known, he might have suggested a more strategic approach, which is what we later ended up doing. My husband and friends were already there and I didn?t think I had the time. But learning something new is always a little frustrating. I learned how to be fun and as you and others have said, ?you have to find your voice? which is what I?ve been doing these past few years.

Is social media savvy a necessary skill set for Human Resources professionals?

Yes sir. It is necessary for every business leader but especially HR professionals. Someone needs to be where the people are and who better than the HR professional? Some of the most interesting conversations take place ?out there? and as business leaders and the chief link between the people and the company, HR must be ?out there?!

Where is the HR profession headed? How do you feel about that?

I believe HR is in the middle of a movement to ensure that the needs of the people are not ignored in business - regardless of size and profit status. People ARE business. NO people, NO business. Know HR, Know business. This will require business leaders and people managers to learn their HR responsibilities and for HR to really think beyond HR and think business.

I?m excited about the transition HR is making. But it requires that business leaders really understand how to engage and fully incorporate HR into all aspects of the business. It also means that HR professionals will have to move from the siloed walls of the department and become fully integrated into the business. What a tough transition it will be for some - but it is possible and it is being done across the world.

What are some of the ways in which you keep up with current business or HR related news and info?

I read everything I can. I have magazines, books, newsfeeds coming to me. I go out to the Internet and do periodic searches. I love research, lots of rich information hidden there. I talk to people and I listen closely to what they say, what they are reading, and try to keep up with what?s hot, new and interesting.

What?s the next challenge for you, professionally speaking?

Launching this business and finish writing my next book! I have a number of clients I?m working with and I won?t officially launch my new company until January. What I am really excited about is our youth camp we?re opening this summer. The not-for-profit camp will focus on preparing the youth of tomorrow for the world of work by bridging the gap between their education and summer fun! We are so excited about it. So much knowledge is lost over the summer, but we are going to focus on helping them retain it in fun and exciting ways so they really do have a head start going into the following school year!
